No spears

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:09 pm

Ay, but remember, Cliffracers were as common as rocks in Morrowind. If you stay around Red Mountain you'll be swarmed by two or three at a time, then once you kill them and walk for 10 seconds you'll hear another one announcing it's arrival and slow, annoying decent towards your blade. And then the cycle continues until you hear the squawks in your sleep and... well, my point is that Dragons may not be rare, but they sure as hell wont be nearly as common as Cliffracers.

I know that. I was being humorous

But dragons being as numerous as cliffracers would be fairly hilarious. For about a minute.

He did say spears are not in concerning the Morrowind sense, but he also did say they're not in yet.

So they may still have a chance of being in the game.

I'm just hoping there will be a way to mod them back in if they are not in the game though.

than what was in the concept art?

Either it's not a spear, but a similar polearm type weapon (The way the question is answered implies that might be a possibility.) or they drew concept art for a spear, but it didn't make it into the game, that sort of thing can happen, and that might explain why it look like it was erased in the image in the video, to show that it didn't get put into the game so as not to mislead fans (If that's the reason, it didn't seem to work very well.)

I'm kind of dissappointed to here no spears, at least not now, the way Todd worded it, it sounds like they MIGHT add them in before release, but I'd say it's unwise to count on that. But regardless, I'm not at all surprised to hear no spears, and their absence is unfortunate, but hardly game ruining. Knowing they wouldn't be in Oblivion never stopped me from playing it, and things won't be any different for Skyrim in that regard.

He said something to the effect "not spears ... per se". Which implies there maybe something similar.

...and that improves immersion?

Yes, it does. To me, swords, maces and axes are all basically the same - they are designed for strong, close combat melee fighters. Without spears which would provide a mid-range combat style, the only other option are daggers.
I hope they will add the bardiche we saw in artworks as a two-handed axe weapon. That would allow for a different style of combat without having to add spears.

I hope that they are present in some form (even if part of a things we left out because 11/11/11 was too tempting a release date DLC). I think that the extra reach could be useful against some of the opponents in Skyrim. Oblivion, I never saw the need, but need and enjoyment are two different things.

They will probably bring back the Spear of Bitter Mercy but have it covered by whatever skill staves are covered under.

I never used spears in Morrowind, so its personally not an issue for me

But I'm curious as to the reason why. It was obvious from the podcast that Todd knew it was an issue for a lot of people, not least on these forums. So they clearly took a conscious strategic decision to leave them out, rather than just randomly 'forgetting'.

A couple of days? Are you actually insane?

In a couple of days you could maybe complete a single (one) spear that would work in game, maybe.

I'm all for spears if they have the time to do it right but it looks like they've already got a lot on their plate with the new engine and all. I'd rather it come later correctly done with proper animations and all. Morrowind spears looked lame to hold and even lamer animations were used for stabbing (in fact, they were the same as staffs) which meant they both looked terrible.

Well if you've played Morrowind or Oblivion for their animations I think you totally missed the whole thing. Everything looked lame animation wise. Unless you have really low standards.
Spears were a really unique type of weapons with a particularly high reach. Not saying I'll miss them in Skyrim, we'll just see how the whole game turns out.

The reason why spears aren't in, and I've said this before, is that Beth doesn't feel they add anything to gameplay. In other words... they can't PERK them.

Maces bypass armor and axes bleed the enemy out. What kind of perk do you give a spear? Make it even longer?

IMO, this is a poor reason to leave them out. They might as well leave out spellmaking or birthsigns or crossbows or levitation ...wait...

I didn't use spears all that much in morrowind. But I can't tell how much I raged when I heard Todd say they weren't in. I wish he would understand that there is more to a game like this than JUST GAMEPLAY. Tamriel is a whole world to me, that is a feeling imposed on me by morrowind and its not something I have experienced in any game since. It's that feeling that I'm looking for, so much more than whether or not I can improve the percentage of armor my mace can bypass.

Would have been nice, but I'm definitely not going to loose sleep over it.

Who knows, maybe they will add them in!

The way he said it was odd. "There are not spears in the CLASSIC spear sense." Perhaps he was alluding to halberds.

I don't mean to be negative. I'm very excited about this game, but it seems like every time I find out more information about the game, I get disappointed.

I think we need to see the game as a whole, instead of looking at few tiny bits here and there. As a whole, I think it's going to be a truly amazing game. Game is perhaps even the wrong word. I'd rather call it: a truly amazing world.

Though I did also hope for spears... It's not essential to the game, of course, but it does add a new feeling to the combat, more diversity and new ways of attacking and defending.

Still, I'm confident that Skyrim will thrive in the best RPG-series in the world, that is The Elder Scrolls.

I liked spears in Morrowind because once I found out how to use them properly it was fun. Instead of hacking or slashing with the spear, you thrust. With me being a low character, I would be able to kill rats and mudcrabs without being hit becasue I would be able to thrust and move back. It kept your enemies away from you. I was able to do so with humans and other enemies as well.

So if combat was being so improved, then they really could use spears, otherwise it is just hack and slash as usual. :sadvaultboy:

It's because they were in Morrowind.

It was because they were fun in Morrowind.

...and that improves immersion?

Well kinda? People forget that not only you are going to wield the weapons in the game. Seeing soldiers outside castles wielding spears would be cool, not to mention seeing a horde of insane argonian bandits trying to stab you. It's not like it will ruin the immersion, but it will defiantly improve it slightly.

Ohwell.
Not surprised really.

Nothing will surprise me about Skyrim.
Not after Oblivion.

I still think it will be a great game...for a console that is- Im now convinced i will get fifth ElderScroll game for my PS3 and will have a great time for a month or two, then i put it back on the shelf.

Pretty bleak if you ask me.

Spears have been used successfully in various forms up in western culture up to the 1500s or so.

If firearms aren't included because they're too modern, then spears can't be excluded because they're too primitive.
