No spears

svcks, but can understand why they're leaving them out. They would have to function differently than more standard weapons, and I'm assuming they put a lot of work into those already.

It was because they were fun in Morrowind.

I thought that they were pretty lacklustre in Morrowind. You may want to take a peek under your nostalgia goggles.

Well kinda? People forget that not only you are going to wield the weapons in the game. Seeing soldiers outside castles wielding spears would be cool, not to mention seeing a horde of insane argonian bandits trying to stab you. It's not like it will ruin the immersion, but it will defiantly improve it slightly.

Yeah but it's all about investment vs reward. Would adding spears really do that much for immersion? Sure, it would help slightly, but then BGS have to take into account how to balance them in light of the new combat system, and they also have to devote manpower to modelling and skinning them. I want to see more diversity in the models of the existing weapons from Oblivion, but I don't care about BGS adding or re-adding additional weapon archetypes that take more effort than they're worth.

I don't honestly care that spears aren't in, I think he said things like halberds are in (I could be mistaken) but personally I think they aint in because of different combat mechanics and it could collide or cause bugs or glitches you never know,

Seing that won't be spears "per se" or something like that and reading http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1164294-other-info-from-the-french-magazine/, maybe spears will be throwing weapons.

How about horses? Or pauldrons? Or spellmaking? Or travel network? etc.. etc...

What about horses?? There will be horses in Skyrim, Todd confirmed that in the Podcast. He also said that they are experimenting with ways to improve mounts, by improving the way you control them, and by adding new types of mounts.

There is also no confirmed sources that spellmaking are out. in the podcast, Todd says that they are trying to figure out ways to implement it in a better way than in Oblivion, so that it doesn't ruin magic (Like it did in Oblivion). If they can't find a good way that works better however, it will be out.

Pauldrons? Do you have ANY source that tells this is out? (Except from those bad French/Italian/Spanish/Dutch translations that proved to have a lot of wrong in them?)

Can we please stop blaming nostalgia for everything? You should very well know that's not the case for everyone.

Seriously. Blaming people's nostalgia is the same as blaming people having their heads way up Bethesda's ass.

It's not the case for everyone...

I think chinese martial arts-style spear combat could have been amazing, but that would have required an enormous amount of work to implement. I don't really miss the Morrowind poke-poke style spears though.

But maybe in the next game: Elder Scrolls VI: Akavir?

I was argonian and used spears in Morrowind. But I'll get over it, I got over it with Oblivion.

You honestly can't have made one thousand posts on these forums without noticing the ridiculous way Morrowind is oversold. I know it's not the case for everyone, but in terms of stupid little issues like whether or not spears will be in it almost always is.

Actually, I'm trying out spears for the first time right now. It's fast, strong and a long reach. You also have to trust instead of hack and slash which feels refreshing as you are always in movement. The biggest problem with spears in Morrowind is the lack of them.

I agree, but that wasn't your question.

Not spears in the classical sense, that makes it different.

They could do spears if they want to, so if there are no spears in Skyrim, I am left with...they didn't want to do spears. Spears are one of the most basic kinds of weapons. I'll be quite surprised if such a basic weapon doesn't make it into the game twice in a row. I'm not one to criticize developers often, but if that is the case, then it's just...stupid. I'd much rather have spears over dual-wielding. I'm not going to throw a fit, and I'll still buy Skyrim, and it will probably still be a wonderful game. It's still stupid (if so).

From the other topic...
We have swords, maces, daggers, etc.

But no spears. Its obvious that everyone knows spears are apart of medieval combat and largely assciated. It cannot be that hard to develope some equations and functions for a single weapon type.

That's not a good reason to have spears, though. That basically amounts to "just because". What role would spears play in the game that isn't taken care of well enough by the other weapons? That's what I'm asking.

Lets just get rid of swords and axes because their just weapons too.

Long/medium distance combat by melee users. Dragons and other winged foes will be a bit easier to kill with such weapons. Attack other melee users from distance who are using short weapons like short-swords and daggers or touch spells.

How you are supposed to kill Dragons without spears ? I think that the most effective way to hit a dragon woul dbe a spear , magic apart ...
