No spears

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:29 am

It was confirmed very early in the http://www.gameinformer.com/b/podcasts/archive/2011/02/03/toddhowardse.aspx that there won't be spears in the game.

Your thoughts about this?

I would've liked them. I like polearms and halberds. But it's ok, it looks like they're making the combat more dynamic and enjoyable. But yah, I'll miss them.

Unfortunate, but I understand. The mechanics to implement spears might just have been too difficult, requiring special animations, possible clipping issues, mechanics for recieving a charge or charging, etc... especially with mounted combat.

The only thing I worry about is that now they'll say mounted combat isn't in, but they've included mounts, which seems like a big waste of time to me.

I've never been a fan of spears. I don't see why everyone is freaking out about them.

I'm fairly disappointed, but I guess I'll just have to deal with it. The game will probably be good, spears or not.

I am going to kill myself.

No, I'm kidding. They were my weapon of choice in Morrowind, but oh well. I didn't miss them in Oblivion and I'm sure I won't miss them in Skyrim.

How can you have Open World Spear Simulator 5 without spears? It doesn't make sense! It- Oh, this game is called Skyrim and- oh okay. But what about- oh. Well in that case, I don't really care.

Spears add more diversity.

...and that improves immersion?

I think I'm starting to understand how to string together an argument for these forums...

than what was in the concept art?

It's concept art, do you have any idea how much concept art gets made for a production on this scale? I'm going to say no.
Look at a movie like Star Wars, literally thousands of concepts were made and the majority of them enver made it into the movie, they're concepts.
They're meant to showcase ideas or help the design team come up with ideas, most concept art stays in the concept phase and never ends up in the final product, either in it's original state or at all.

At any rate, I don't care.

I never really used spears myself, I know very well why spears are practical but they are such situational weapons that I don't really see the point in using them when the vast majority of my time is spent on foot and in close quarters.
Had mounted combat been in the spears would've been extremely usefull, both from horseback and from the ground agaisnt mounted opponents. That's not the case though.

A sword is a far more versatile weapon and far better suited in almost every combat situation found in this kind of game.

So in short, I don't care.

It's because they were in Morrowind.

So were Cliffracers. I rest my case.

From Todd's podcast: One-handed, two-handed, archery : no spear is the classic skill sense. Each skill has a skill-tree – one-handed skill, perk for sword, etc.

So, there won't be a Spear skill like in MW, but spears aren't totally discarded, I think...

There maybe spear type weapons, but not actual spears......YET!
He says as the other guy talks over him "there's currantly not"
We will ( i believe ) see spears somewhere down the line.
My quess......DLC...it would be a big selling point for them,in my opinion.

I wouldn't have used Spears if it was in and apprently it's not. It's not a big deal there will be a good numbered amount of weapons that you won't miss Spears.

Ay, but remember, Cliffracers were as common as rocks in Morrowind. If you stay around Red Mountain you'll be swarmed by two or three at a time, then once you kill them and walk for 10 seconds you'll hear another one announcing it's arrival and slow, annoying decent towards your blade. And then the cycle continues until you hear the squawks in your sleep and... well, my point is that Dragons may not be rare, but they sure as hell wont be nearly as common as Cliffracers.

How about horses? Or pauldrons? Or spellmaking? Or travel network? etc.. etc...

Perhaps we don't individually use all these features, but it certainly makes for a better gaming experience to have them in.

Whilst I want to be positive about this, part of me can't help wondering what on earth they have been doing at Bethesda for 5 years if they don't come up with spears and horses and other, let's be honest, **standard** things. Todd mentioned RDR, and is well he should, because if Rockstar ever feel the urge to start making open world fantasy games with their engine, with co-op and cutscenes and stuff, they could be in danger of putting Bethesda to shame.
