Special character support

Post » Wed May 12, 2010 8:30 pm

I want to be able to use special characters like á, ?, ó, and even more so the Icelandic characters t and e. Morrowind handled basic special characters through the CS but not Icelandic characters (it just read them as t and d). When I play a Nord, I want an Old Norse name. ;)

Yeah, I know the font supported them, but American keyboards can't type them. :/

Well, you can use number combinations. If you hit num lock, hold down the left alt-button and type in the right number combination, the proper letters will appear.

These are the combinations for ?, ? and ?:

146 (?)
145 (?)
157 (?) or 153 (?)
155 (?) or 148 (?)
143 (?)
134 (?)

Edit: Only works with numbers on the numpad

Not the easiest way, but better than nothing...

Yea western keyboards unfortunately do not have a panel of accented characters. But either alt codes or as fourtrax just said, copy and pasting should work. I don't think its a contentious issue for the development team.

I want Skyrim to recognise my keyboard so I actually know where the buttons for ' and - are.
I'd also like to use ?, ? and ?, since I have them on my keyboard, and it's nords we're talking about. :)

Maybe you could copy and paste in Oblivion, but not in Morrowind. :( However, I didn't realize numbers worked in game.

It should support any kind of character or accents in the extended set. So a nice "insert special character" key/button for anything you can type, would be be welcome. But what about saves? If you name your character Hil?ur, the saves should still become Hildur, as there are problems with these characters in the OS. I.e. I'm not able to open a screenshot called "Hil?ur or Hildur.bmp", so... One needs to thread carefully here.

What OS? I have Windows 7 and Windows XP, and both can handle most special characters except certain IPA symbols and non-Roman symbols in titles.

XP here. I can name the files using such names, but certain software may not work well. So my "Hil?ur or Hildur.bmp" wouldn't open in XnView. I get an OS error box saying "Error opening file ...blablabla..." without XnView even showing. But I know from past experiences that using norwegian char set (??????) has caused problems, and it has been warned about in certain work related issues. It could be different OS, FTP issues, file server and backup software incompatibilities, I don't know. But it's wise to be careful.

So, if just changing input language doesn't quite do the job and one's desperate not to use "ae" or "oe" instead of ? and ?... only come up with names that use ? and type them like "aa" or use alternatives. Like H?vard = Haavard and Eivind/Eyvind is derived from ?yvind... I know it's not the greatest solution ever, but surely it beats the hell out of nothing. And it's linguistically correct to do so.

I think this would be neat. I don't know much about Norwegian as a language, but I'm fascinated by the whole thing. I keep telling my wife we're going to move there one day.

The 360 has this to a degree. Or at least it did in Oblivion.

If Bethesda use the saving system from Morrowind the character's name should not be a problem. In Morrowind you chose a separate name for the save when you saved, unlike Oblivion.

I think saves and screenshots (and movies?) should be stored under character name directory. If someone tries to create a character named Hil?ur when a preexisting one called Hildur, they should simply be warned that it is not possible, since directory and/or filenames would be Hildur.

Misconceptions about programming strikes again!

As in all programming the alphabet is always drawn from the ASCII table it's the easiest thing to code because all computers are built to understand it on a component level, adding special characters while it could be done would indoubtedly cause bugs some where else

I have a Swedish keyboard, and I can't write ?, ?, or ? in neither Morrowind or Oblivion.
Also, if I type "?" I get a "-", and if I type "-" I get a "?". :P

True, but I have a mild addiction to the letter thorn. ;) As long as t is supported, I'll be happy. ;) I'd much rather name my character Tórniútr than Thorniutr or even Thórniútr.
