Its all a game. They've probably got 3 or 4 lists of things ...
- things they'll talk about freely
- things they'll talk about freely, but later
- things they won't talk about freely but don't care if they're leaked
- things they try to keep a surprise
Ultimately, its just a way of maintaining anticipation and interest. If everyone knew precisely how all the mechanics would work and how the story progressed, there'd be a lot less anticipation. But if you keep a certain amount of things on that "do not talk" list, then there's always something for people to yap about and thus a constant state of anticipation maintained.
