Speed up Crysis 2

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 3:01 pm

Hello Community,

I am looking for a way to speed up my Crysis 2 because its not running smoothly on my pc...

PC Req.: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q8300
Nvidia GeForce GT230 1.5 GB
6 GB DDR2

I am playing it on 1024x768 Resolution and High settings. But my System actually uses 1280x1024 resolution and my Graphic card should be good enough to play it smoothly in my Opinion.. I have to play it on that low resolution to play it a bit smooth.

I hope somebody can give some advice

Greetz DonCanki :)

Try overclocking your graphics card, also try overclocking your cpu from the bios screen.

This will overclock your graphics card >>

You've got a decent processor and more memory than you need. Your graphics card though is very weak. It's a budget version and a few generations old now. If you're looking for better performance I would definitely look at upgrading the graphics. I would suggest at least a GTX460.

A GT230 is like a 9600GT. Just reduce the graphics settings to medium/high and you should be able to play at 1440x900.

A GT230 is significantly slower than even a 9600GT

It's basically the same GPU just like the GT250 is a 9800GTX rebranded. I assume this is a laptop? GT230M?

If it is then it's way below the minimum spec

No. The GT 230 is also an OEM Desktop card.

And it is slower than the 9600GT.

The GT 240 GDDR5 model is equal to the 9600GT. The GT 230 OEM 1.5GB DDR2 is much slower.

I use a GT 240 GDDR5 OC'd and I play on 1600x900 Very High with 30+ FPS.

So I would guess he should play on High at the same resolution, or on 1440x900 .

So:

Try overclocking with MSI Afterburner.

I'm sure you can hit 600 MHZ on that card. And you performance is being raqed by your card's DDR2 memory. Overclock that a bit.

Well yes, GDDR version s a lot better than a DDR2 version. Minimum spec is a 8800 which is quiet a fast card for it's time.

Yes it's a rebranded 9600 but the clocks have been dialled back to reduce power consumption. OP could increase the clocks but in my experience it's usually not really worth bothering. Might get a 10-15% FPS increase but if your frames are dipping under 20 then 10% is only gonna get you 1-2FPS - not really worth it IMO.

He could use WASDIES config tool to set everything as low as it can go and go from there.

Just do "high," apparently they think PCs have weak egos...

But in short, the GT230 is much less than the minimum video card specs for the game (it was designed to be a low power/heat card). Sorry. Check clock speed and number of shaders in comparison to an 8800GT when you get your next video card if you want it to play Crysis 2 smoothly.

Start at medium graphics and try 1280 resolution and go upwards according to what fps you get. If it starts to lag then you know you're getting to your limit.

You say your system uses 1280x1024 - I assume that is your native screen resolution/

I would set it to that resolution and then download this piece of software. http://www.mediafire.com/?7ad2fd42giqzkzf

With that you can set options to their minimums. Be aware however that some options cause other issues. You shouldn't set motion blur to off because it cause issues but you can set it to it's minimum.

To overclock just slightly increase the clocks, test it, if everything is fine try bumping them up a touch more. Do this until the 1st sign of a problem and then dial them back slightly and test again. Repeat until you find the highest stable speed.

Truthfully though overclocking isn't gonna benefit you greatly.

Set you graphics card's fan @ 100% when OCing.

Any idea what's wrong with mine?

I have AMD Phenom x6 @2.8Ghz
ATI Radeon HD 5770

I play on extreme and 1920*1080, surely my computer should be able to handle it easy enough? But I only get like 30FPS...

Do you OC your GPU or CPU?
I recently downclocked my CPU to 3.95Ghz so i could speed my RAM up a little, i could tinker with the bios for hours, :P, anyways using a quad core i wouldn't be satisfied with it until it hit 3.9Ghz.
My 760 is default 2.8, i'm sure if it was set at this speed you could notice a difference no problem.

Overclocking won't do much good in a case like this. When you overclock, you can hope for maybe a 10% increase in framerate. If your framerate is low to begin with, you hardly get any benefit. Going from 20 fps to 22 fps isn't a big improvement.

You can improve the framerate with some custom commands. Set up an autoexec.cfg file if you haven't already, and add the commands r_ssao = 0 and r_postMSAA = 0. You also need to find your game.cfg file and remove the sys_spec command so your custom commands take effect in multiplayer.

Lower settings will turn off SSAO and AA anyway and yes, I think overclocking is just a waste of time on that GPU.

From the looks of it, your best shot is to bottom out the graphical settings, or buy a new graphics card such as the HD5770 or GTX460.

Nope. Lowered settings SHOULD shut off those effects, but they won't. You have to shut them off manually.

Well that's stupid. SSAO is one of the most taxing effects out there. Indeed a lower pre-set setting should turn SSAO and AA off.

What the hell are you talking about?

High has both AA and SSAO off.

Very High has SSAO off but a low AA setting on. (Or it may use a less intensive type of SSAO vs.Extreme, but it definitely isn't the same setting as Extreme.)

Extreme has both on.
