No Spell-Making confirmed . #2

Post » Sun Aug 14, 2011 4:55 pm

Looks like my "send a tweet every day to pete" strategy finally worked , because he replied today , and not many will like what he had to say .....
It has been confirmed today that Skyrim will NOT feature spell-making by Bethesda's VP of PR Pete Hines via a tweet .

This is what Pete Hines , VP of PR had to say when I asked if Spell-Making was making a return to Skyrim .

There isn't spell making. I thought we'd said that, or someone else had in a preview.

BTW you're welcome ....

NOTE : Great you guys , now I had to make another topic cuz u were flaming each other , please keep away from inflammatory remarks to avoid getting this one closed as well !

This isn't news, I suspected this.
And quite frankly, Morrowind is my remedy.

It's fine.
There is a whole new system to toy with now that you equip spells differently.

Ok, when I close a thread and say everyone needs to chill out. It means I do not want you to start another thread 60 seconds later. Closing this for the timebeing. I will re-open later. :stare:

I am re-opening this thread. Do NOT start sniping at each other just because you disagree over whether or not this is huge news, or just not that much of a problem for you. Do not get yourselves worked up over stuff and break forum rules. Do stay on topic and try to avoid the sneery blah blah blah gaming is being dumbed down comments as a sideways attempt at taking another shot at a member.

Keep a little perspective with your dissection of random bits of info please.

Wow, just wow. People are going to skip out on the game because there is no spell making. I'm upset its not in, but damn, I'm not going to skimp out on all the quests and adventures I'll have because I can't make a paralysis spell with fire damage.

why dont we actually play the game and see if no spellmaking is a bad thing first then criticize it later. The developers arnt stupid they probably made a new system where the spells level with you so your list doesnt get cluttered up

This is sad. I guess it just didn't work with the current Magic system, but still very sad. :(

I hope the new magic system makes it so Spell Creation is more magical. I think the dual-wielding of spells fixes this. Want a ice and fire missile? Cast fire and ice while dual-wielding fireball and iceball or something.

I'm not upset about not having spell making, they made up for it by implementing more variation of spells.
(Fireball to flamethrower for example) I'm quite happy. :disguise:

its not about stupid or smart , they just chose not to spend much of their time on this feature and thought that other things in the game were more important and that's what I disagree with .I think Spell-Making was an important aspect of all Elder Scrolls games .

It's kind of sad, but there's so much in the game still, it doesn't matter that much.

WHY???!!! (Don't respond, I know why)

I nearly voted that It was a deal breaker, but decided to go for the next pessimistic poll option instead. There should at least be more spells to make up for this.
For example: they said there were like ~70 spell types or something, right? They should have somewhere around 5 or 10 power levels of each type of spell.
Something like a fireball lv 1-10 system. They should also have some spells that are combinations of effects, but with special animations. (Such as making a spell to cast fire and ice, but rather than looking like one or the other it would have its own animation.)

If they did something like that, then it might be okay. I just hope it is still possible to play a pure mage.

I'm disappointed, but maybe Bethesda will pull through and the new system will be much better than the old.

I like the twitters that Pete makes.

e.g. @Skyrim2011: No.. No.

I think this adds more uniqueness to each spell if we compare it to Oblivion visually. The spells looked the same with just different dmg points but now we can manipulate each spell with 3 different ways and combine them for more options. This focus I think has lead to no time for creating spell-making in Skyrim and I think it is the right priority

I'm sad, but it's fine overall.

Spellmaking was cool in OB but was very limited (effect wise) and boring, so I would rather have a bunch of good, powerful, unique in-game spells instead (But if we could make spells with these new effects that would be great, lol)

Maybe spell creation could be added as a dlc? If it becomes one it would have to be pretty amazing though (And maybe you could only make spells of a certain magic class if you reached level 75 in that class or something)

Buy the PC version and wait for/make your own mod?

The magic system is completely different and a lot more dynamic than previous games, so it seems like it would be really hard to judge what may or may not be "lost" without actually playing with the revamped system.

I'm rather sad about this. It'd be nice if Bethesda could have sorted out the 'spreadsheety' feel of spell creation (which it undeniably had) and some of the more extreme exploits, without removing it altogether.

I can see, though, that as they've greatly upped the complexity and distinctiveness of the spell graphics it'd be a bit of a nightmare trying to create a system to combine them. And that's one area that I'm rather torn. To keep spellmaking they'd really have to make all spells very basic and interchangeable visually (a bit of coloured light around the hand, a ball of light thrown at an enemy, a basic particle-effect on impact), and that would really hold back on the immersive impact of magic.

Oh well, we'll see. Hopefully other areas of the game have increased in complexity enough to compensate for the loss of this.

Spell making was very OP and boring in oblivion, but it would've been nice if they had kept it, and led it more along the lines of changing the affects of spells rather then the individual stats of it. Like making 2-in-1 spells and creating unique magic effects and stuff. As i don't really play a mage its not a big deal for me but i can definetly see how this is a major dissapointment for magic oriented players.
