Complex spell effects are a bogus excuse. Just give such effects to the element that does the most damage in the current spell, or let the player choose which effect applies to the spell when mixing them.

I'm hoping it's a mistranslation. I am in favor of almost everything I've heard, but I'll be extremely disappointed if there is no spell crafting. Perhaps disappointed enough to not bother making a spell caster as I planned to.

Removing spell making would destroy the pure mage class totally, yes mages was powerful in Oblivion but not more than twice melee or archers. With only boring default spells it would be incredibly nerfed and also boring to play, remember all the hours I have used testing different spells in Oblivion and Morrowind.
No Oblivion spell making was not broken with the possible exception of weakness to magic stacked, however if you played as a pure mage you simply increased difficulty.
Most people who did advanced spell making in Oblivion was hardcoe roleplayers who used lost of time studying the game.
Also you was able to make better spells as you levelled up, this is radically different than being able to get the best equipment at low level, ruining the fun of the game.

Morrowind magic was broken, far to slow to play as a pure mage unless you used the fortify intelligence potion exploit.
So it looks like magic will be broken in Skyrim to, can live with it but see it as a major [censored]up, probably larger than level scaling in Oblivion as it's easy to fix.

You're assuming the default spells won't improve at all, which does not sound like it will be the case.

Yes it was, scroll up to my previous post for a perfect example.

Complex spell effects was in reference to not allowing spell combining. As in, if you have a Ice spell which slows down the targets movement speed, and a Lightning spell which drains magicka, you wouldn't have a new spell effect like draining magicka + slowing the regeneration of that magicka. It would require Bethesda to try to predict all possible spell combos in order to program them into the game. I think what Todd said is that the engine can't handle creating those spell effects on it's own.

Okay that makes sense. For spell making though it's not a good excuse.

I am assuming that this magazine http://www.giochiperilmiocomputer.it/ is the one in question. Don't have it, or scans, or can even read Italian for that matter, but it is the one with Italian info that is the article equivalent to GI. It's shelf date is January 30th so it is possible that someone has it. Although I don't know for certain.

Spell making has not been confirmed as out. I'm 99.99% sure that this was a mistranslation from that Italian magazine. I'm fairly certain that BGS would not be giving out different shreds of information to different magazines like this. GI didn't say that spell creation is out, so I'm not going to count it as out. I think it will still be in the game in the same capacity as it has always been.

The person who translated the italian article said that the article said this

"
-The article says that you will not be able to combine and create new spells. yeah, this really svcks, I hope it's some kind of mistake..."

This doesnt mean no spell making, this just means most likely that the frost and lightning perk for example wont combine to create a stunted magicka regen or something like that.

It just gets down to the point that I just don't trust Bethesda to be making my spells for me. They just don't seem to do a good job at it.

Because flamethrowers and fire traps that explode when walked on are soooooooo laaaaaaaaaaaaame.

Please, Skyrim's magic system is going to be through the roof in terms of pure "bad assery", and as people have pointed out, the custom magic system was mainly used to abuse the game's mechanics and create stupidly powerful and spammable spells.

So...how much do you want to bet some modders are going to make a spell creation mod in 1.5 months that will work perfectly fine? I hate when Bethesda says they can't do something. Way to sound like the fat kid in gym class. "I can't make ladders" "I can't do mounted combat" "I can't do spell creation"

There was another thread discussing Two Worlds II. One of things you can do there is combine all kinds of crazy effects, like x2, x3, or richochet, or DOT. You can then stack these effects to get a triple shot fire ball that bounces of walls and does damage over time. It's redic. Beth needs more ambition.

This is too bad of a change, Im willing to bet its a mistranslation and that you cannot combine two spells from each of your hands (cast at the same time).

Or, to, you know, create spells we needed because if we had to buy all our spells it would be a total crapshoot.

Tell and illusion mage that Frenzy on Target in an AOE wasn't necessary to play and he'd laugh at you. As I've mentioned before, I have NO idea how they're going to add duration, area, etc into the game without spell making, because if they made it some cheesy menu system, well, that's just what I don't want. Wandering around in menus tweaking spells I shouldn't have to tweak to get the desired effect.

I'm not too worried about combat spells, as even though I like to tune them to fit the specific abilities of my character I suspect that I should be able to manage that if the GameInformer information is correct. What I worry about are the half dozen or so utility spells that I end up making during the course of a playthrough. Some are to fix mistakes, hitting my horse with a strong damage speed potion, others are becuase I am tired of swimming my horse and I need a water walking on touch. Others are just convient, but I would really miss them. They can try to cover everything but there will be something that everyone wants that they miss. If custom spells are gone what I will miss most is the crazy spells I sometimes try after saving (So when the whole city riots after the 1 point of fire damage over the max area spell hits I can go back to the save and undo everything).

so... the answer to that is to not allow the abuse. I assume you're talking about 1 second charm spells and things of that nature. There are ways to stop that without removing spellmaking.

Not as bad as the invincible equipment enchantment can make, between 100 % immunity to magic, restore health and permanent invisibility, magic spells are still limited by your magicka.

it doesnt really make a difference the only use for them was for over powered end game spells anyways, and you only really had the cash and access during the end game (except for in morrowind) if the magic system is overhauled anyways i dont see the problem

Hold on here. You realize you can have two spells at the same time right? It doesn't matter if you can't cast them at the same time.

Right hand, cast summon Skeleton.
1second later
Left hand, cast invisibility.

OR.

Right hand, cast ice bolt at that charging warrior to slow him down
Then
Left hand, cast lightning to damage that mages magicka.

Oh no! I'm being surrounded by a group of bandits.
Holds right hand attack to cast flamethrower creating a circle of fire around me
Left hand casts invisibility
Fire dies down, I sneak away. The bandits are seriously confused.

Skyrim's magic is going to be awesome.

That's a huge part of making spells. Like someone else said, you could even make and name your spells in Two Worlds II. Todd! You can not let TWII out do your magic system. They can have all kinds of crazy effects etc. but if they don't have spell creation its all moot. I seriously cannot believe its gone, therefore I wont beleive that its gone.

Hell, there are limitless possibilities!
the only difference is that now you can't really combine them. I think I even read that you can cast them at the same time, only that the effects don't combine.
So basically, casting fire and ice is still possible.

but what I imagine is:
freeze the floor so that bandits bail on it, then freeze him down so he can't get up. then, I'd shock the hell out of him so that he can't silence me, and it would eventually kill him

I definitely prefer combos to just one big ass spell. makes me look more stylish. and if something makes me more stylish, then let it be! (why do you think I love DMC lol)

I wish. But there will always be something.

You can not combine and create new spells. Or in other words, you can not combine spells with duel wielding to create a new one. I'm yet to see one single shread of solid evidence that spellmaking itself its even gone. Even if it isn't in game yet, it'll only take one look from the people who manage the money at Beth towards this forum to figure out people will seriously be up in arms and knocking down Beth's front doors if its not in, and they'll turn to the developers and say "Let there be magic."
