Spell Speaking

Post » Tue Jun 08, 2010 9:29 pm

I have noticed that a lot of things these days have voice recognition commands for completing tasks where it is more convenient (or safe) to be hands free.
Is it so crazy to hope for casting spells by speaking the spells name into the mic?

1. It would add to immersion and make the game more fun
2. eliminates annoying hot-keys and cycling
3. If they have this tech in cars and phones (which have minimal computing hardware) why can't they have it in a next-gen game?

Just an Idea, feel free to discuss

Plus, it would be a nightmare if you dont speak clearly. But it would be an excelent idea for a mod.

player with heavy accent: fireball

Wes Johnson's voice: I can't understand your accent, criminal scum! Pronounce it right or it's off to jail with you!

I really don't want to spend 30 hours training my game to understand my voice. If programs specifically built as speech to text software like Dragon Naturallyspeaking can't get it right most of the time even after using it for weeks I don't want to implement it here.

wouldn't hurt to replace hotkeys with spoken commands, but still use the mouse to cast it.

btw, as a middle ground, if the character speaks the spell while casting it WOULD add to immersion.

I didn't know all TES magic casting required incantations.

I'd rather have real spell hotkeys binding this time around and not have to depend on a mods like Hov's and Hotkeyspells.

I had always thought that spellcasting in Elder Scrolls was about weaving it with your hands, not incantations. I personally prefer it that way. It prevents every Average Joe on the street from using magic by just saying the secret words. Although that doesn't stop the player from learning spells regardless of their archetype...
