Spell Tome Conjurer Killing My Game

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 9:18 pm

So ... I finally got around to buying the DLC from Bethesda, including Spell Tomes. One of the mod "features" is the mad Conjurer that comes after you if you're outside. This guy is killing my game! When he shows up, my FPS drops to single digits and sometime during the fight or as he's being killed, the game will crash. If I wait - come out of the sewers and wait for, say, seven or eight hours, there is a chance the game will just crash because he is showing up. If I disable the mod, there is no problem.

I've cleaned the mod with TES4edit, I'm using the Unofficial Patch. Load order is sorted with BOSS. No identified conflicts. I ran a search on the mod forum here "spell+tome+conjurer+crash" but came up with nothing.

Has anyone else had this problem? I know I only paid .99 cents for this - less than a cup of Starbucks - but right now, I'm ready to just pitch it.

Thanks for any help.

If he is causing problems, kill him or disable him via the console

I would think if that conjurer was that big of a problem a lot of us would have run into it by now. It sounds like you're just getting unlucky with him. Next time you see him, just console kill him if you can.

I haven't had this problem - I don't think I've even met a mad conjurer, and I have indeed had Spell Tomes enabled since just before I left the sewers. Is this perhaps some weird interaction between mods that showed up after your Spell Tomes install, or did you definitively trace the conjurer to Spell Tomes in the CS? You may wish to post your load order.

Does this conjurer come after you any time you are outside, or just when you leave a specific location? If the latter, have you tried disabling the DLC and re-enabling when you are someplace safe?

All of this may be things you already tried but I thought I'd mention it. Good luck finding the solution.

P.S., I also play Oblivion on my MacBook Pro :)

Maybe he gets killed before he gets to you then? I get him every time. I've involved him in starting a roleplay or two too.

As for the OP, couldn't someone just make a fix esp that stops him from ever spawning in the first place? That way you can keep the tomes and not crash. :)

@ Everyone:

Thanks for the replies; I do appreciate it. I deleted all my saves, rebuilt my bashed patch, and that seemd to help a bit.

P.S., I also play Oblivion on my MacBook Pro :)

How is that working for you? Overall performance is fantastic for me, getting a stead 30 in most interior cells (using OSR which caps the FPS at 30) and even in the high 20s in some exterior cells. Some UL exterior cells force a hit. Some interior cells cause a drop, mostly the Better Cities cells like the Imperial City tunnel and a couple of their new taverns that rely solely on flickering light.

My biggest problem so far has been the MBP soundcard (I have a 2008 MBP). Bootcamp, Apple's Windows installing application, relies upon ReakTek sound drivers. I installed the latest drivers from Apple before I installed Oblivion. But I kept getting this stattering, stuttering sound. I went to the Apple forums and, sure enough, there's a long list of people who are having the same problem. The soundcard conflicts with the wireless card, or so they say. If you disable the wireless card in windows, sound and performance improves. I went to RealTek last night - not the Apple Bootcamp site - and downloaded their latest HiDef sound drivers. Big improvement, but still some crackling. Someone had posted a wireless card driver but that link didn't work ... there was no download.

For now, it's running great with two exceptions, both in exterior (outside) cells: sometimes my FPS just drops to single digits. Usually if I looking across a distance (like standing at one end of Anvil and looking towards the other), or if I'm entering a cell that has to load. I'm using OSR and Streamline (with the Streamsmoothing function turned off), so I'm not sure why this is happening.

The second problem, I think, relates to sound. I'm using Realistic Fatigue, Sleep, Hunger. Thirst. RF addes a blurred vision, panting breath function. I seem to get a problem in fights with all that sound running through my card or processor. (I don't have Quite Feet installed yet, but I see that in my near future). My FPS plummets in fights, to the point that OSR has to go into slomo mode.

Of course, I'm closing in on 200 mods, including all those that in my sig.

Recommend you turn off hardware acceleration in the Oblivion.ini (set bDSoundHWAcceleration to 0). I had some sound issues and this fixed it for me. I've heard of lots of sound issues with the Realtek drivers and turning off acceleration may help. Definitely load Quiet Feet. That may help with your pursuing conjurer too, although people aren't affected by Quiet Feet :)

Side note:
He is installed by the Spell Tomes DLC. The idea is to give you a guaranteed spell tome, although this time I've been running around so much he never caught up to me :) I suspect he got eaten by something by now... I usually see him on most play-throughs. He starts at Fort Cedrian if you want to go look for him when you start a new game. He'll come looking for you though, so he won't be there long.

Thanks for the tip. :)

Wow, you guys must be very fast. I play with an alternative start mod and Map Marker Overhaul - with Fast Travel setting to the minimum - and I never get more than a few game hours in and there he is, casting that Scamp spell and taking after me ... :)

If I don't wait anywhere, I usually don't find him. Sometimes I get lucky and catch him getting mauled by the normal dangers of the Imperial province - bandits, marauders, etc.
