Spells and Magic

I love mages and my proudest moment at one time was being accepted into the Arcane University. I hope I can have that feeling again.

I'm hoping we can make spells with less of a hassle though, and enchanting items as well. Also more spell customization. Like how you cast the spell and the look of it. More diversity in spell types is most appreciated.

I'd love to create a spell called Kamehameha at a high enough level and float around with levitation in battle. I guess it would be some form of electricity spell. Being able to cast it as one continuous beam of energy for a short period of time would be god tier.

Maybe being able to charge up spells somehow. Like reciting you'r spell as it builds up power and flares to life in you'r hand.

The main issue with this nice feature, is that it's extremely easy to break.

1- Add a small resist fire bonus to your Dunmer to make him immune to fire.
2- Make the spell do 500 fire damage onself for 10 minutes.
3- Go crazy with any effect you want.

Would be nice if they used that concept on some pre-made spells though.

That can be solved with a function with an if-else statement that checks the spell for resistance on self for anything and then would negate any such discount.

Also i'd love to be able to, at a high enough level in conjuration, be able to summon and keep a daedra as a pet or something without it going away. I could make guards for my stronghold. =D

Just make Spellmaking as it was in Daggerfall. Morrowind screwed it up, and Oblivion even worse :nope:

No time for a large post, but as far as the exploitability of low-cost negative-effect spells, how about making them start with the negative effects at certain magnitudes relating to skill? For example, just tossing out random numbers, if your Destruction skill is 25, you can go up to 50 fire damage before it does damage to you as well. If your skill is 50, it can go to 100, etc. You can make the spell safer by removing those negative effects, but make it more expensive, and as such have cheaper, unsafe spells as well. You wouldn't have the same extent of customization as far as creating any positive/negative effects you want at the same time, but it wouldn't be so exploitable. Or, you could change the negative effect to something else, but couldn't exceed the "value" of the negatives.

How about different physical launching sites from one's body. Instead of just the hands, how about from the mouth for Frenzies, or from ones eyes for command, or from ones derrier for gas clouds....ermmm :bolt:

Some great ideas here, with the exception of rumbly. You drunk, man? :P

On stacking spells:

I like stacking and don't think it should be removed. Suggesting so is like saying people shouldn't be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. The unified cooldown in ME2 was a major drawback, and a step backwards from ME1. May as well be a turn-based RPG at that point. No way is TES ever going to be like that.

More unique spells would be awesome, though.

I have no problem with the mages guild having a monopoly on spellmaking personally, to me it makes sense. The mages guild is going to do everything within it's power to make sure they are the only ones who can offer things that mages in Tamriel need, in order to monoploize the buisness. I think of the mages guild as a somewhat greedy entrepenour based orginization that seeks complete control of magic in tamriel. Think of the order of high sorcery in the dragonlance series, to them it was a crime to practice magecraft without joining them, while being a rouge wizard in elder scrolls is obviously legal, I would think it would be frowned upon by the majority of mages, whom are guild mages.

So, I'd like...

-Spellmaking to remain a mage guild only (possibly available to other groups that are based heavily on magecraft)
-I like the idea for being able to customize size of projectile, color of projectile, and maybe some specifics on shape, it would allow for you to have some much needed diversity in casting
-Negative effects on self lowering mana cost, Who doesn't want a spell "Entropic blast" 50 poison damage on target 10 damage to self
-Also, bring back poison damage
-Mark, Recall, Levitation and all of those Morrowind spell effects back.

That's all for now.

In addition to the other excellent staff ideas above, I'd like the ability to create and then enchant your own staffs. I would also like the shield spells to actually mean something. An enemy mage that casts shield upon himself shouldn't then feel it necessary to run away like a little [censored] all the time!

How about the spells element appearing on your hand? I mean like how in Bioshock, depending on the Plasmid being used, you could have a red hand with molten cracks in it and smoke rising of it, or a frozen, blue, cracked hand.

I would like to see free spell making and the ability to delete spells from my list when I choose.
Why would you ever need to buy a spell from an inanimate object?
Not having to join the mages guild to make spells either. Thank goodness for the wizards tower dlc.
I don't want my character to have to be tied to an organization.

I agree with this fully. Bioshock 2 had some great effects. Wouldn't mind seeing some elements streaming from the hand either. Just like the level 3 element plasmids.

more like morrowind, and bring back all the extra clothing slots i believe there was a speculation thread about how magic was broken in TES IV i wish i had it here but essentially enchanting was a HUGE part of why it was so much weaker

What options would you like added to the spell making process?

I would prefer that they just made a good spell combat system, rather than continually resting on their laurels and providing virtually no improvement over the space of eighteen years.

Personally, I think these big companies (wrongly) assume that to make the most money and get the most mass acceptance, they have to make everything as easy and as basic as possible. It makes me glad I'm not a designer in the games industry. I can't imagine how bad I would feel if after working on a series of four games that spans almost three decades, a new game like Two Worlds shows up out of nowhere, with a fraction of the budget and ends up getting compared directly to my latest and greatest - and is in fact the preferred choice by a lot of people. If that's not a sign that it's time to finally pull your fingers out for a change, then I don't know what is.

personally I would love to be able to see previews of the spell before I choose to create it, as well as being able to create my own physical and visual effects from a list of preset options.

Dunno if this has been discussed before, but I'd like spells to actually make a physical and visual affect on a enemy, say if you froze someone, a thin layer of ice would develop around them and they would freeze in place or be forced to walk, and if you throw a fireball at them they catch on fire and start panicking. Also, I want to be able to pick up enemies with telekinesis and slam them against a wall to knock them unconscious or kill them.

aaand, I want levitation to come back :)

Awesome. Thanks, guys. Seems I'm not the only one that would like the ability to personalize the appearance of spells.

Writing known spells (enough skill to cast) onto parchments to make your own spell scrolls, anyone?
