Spells in the begining of the game

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 11:28 pm

Ok so i went to go start a new game with all of the DLC added and the Expansions as a Dark Elf, Female.
Though when i went to my spells i found i had two extra ones, why is this?
The spells are
Minor Respite
and
Serenity

What mods do you use aside from the DLCs? And are you sure that those aren't from Spell Tomes? I mean, it should be pretty obvious 'cause when you read a Spell Tome it offers you the choice whether or not to add it to your spell list, but ya never know.

Or do you mean you create a new character and then immediately open the spell list and there they are?

EDIT: Minor Respite is a Restore Fatigue spell, and Serenity is a Calm spell, neither of which I believe are starting spells for their respective magic schools (I could be wrong though).

I meant starting a new character. After i got to the part where you get attacked with the king for the first time, i look and there they are...
I have every DLC if that helps

They are added to help you better the Magical skills you picked, those being Illusion and Restoration. If you did not pick one of these as a major skill, then I am at a loss.

The starting spells are added based on your character's major skills.

If you have different major skills for different character, then you'll get different starting spells.

That is odd. They shouldn't appear until after the Emperor's death, when you talk to Baurus and choose a class; and even then, I don't think Minor Respite nor Serenity are ones that you should be getting for Restoration and Illusion, respectively, especially if you don't get Absorb Health and Starlight as well.

Also I think you misunderstood my question about mods. I know you have all the DLCs, but what mods do you have that aren't DLCs?

It is weird. AFAIK, the starting spells for Restoration and Illusion are Absorb Health and Starlight, respectively. I think that mods add other spells to the mix (I know LAME does it).

hmmm
that could be it... i mean i just recently installed the files, so maybe that's why it added them.
I wonder if it's race specific though...

Do you have Spell Tomes installed?

They had bug which added random spells to your spell book while loading saved game.

Starlight and Serenity are both added to your spellbook if you choose Illusion as a major. Absorb Health and Minor Respite are both added if you have Restoration as a major. Everyone, of course, starts with Minor Heal.

I just checked; this is incorrect. Starlight and Soothing Touch are the ones given by choosing Illusion; Absorb Health is given by choosing Restoration, but my character's spellbook has no other Restoration spells aside from Heal Minor Wounds (PC start spell), Heal Major Wounds (purchased), and Absorb Health. No sign of Minor Respite anywhere, and it's one I'd only have if I had found the tome for it.

So, the mystery remains.

Especially because the OP stated that no mods are used, just official content (DLCs).

I know for sure that LAME adds Minor Respite as a starting Restoration spell.

The mystery remains indeed.

This may not add much to the topic, but if it a mystery, I've been living with it for 2 years. Every time I've chosen those magic schools, I have always received Minor Respite and Serenity as starting spells. Strange you guys haven't.

The starting spells are added based on your character's major skills.

If you have different major skills for different character, then you'll get different starting spells.

Yep,
There is also a (reasonably) well known glitch where spell tome spells randomly add themselves to your spell book without you ever having read the book, this can happen when you fast travel or (I think) load a game, basically randomly.
So it could well be this as well if they aren't the normal base spells you get.

EDIT: So I just properly read through your post (sorry, I was being lazy), and yep, they're just the ones you get added by proxy if you choose certain Magic Schools as majors: Serenity would be from illusion, and Minor Respite is one you get automatically, even if you choose no magic schools.

EDIT 2: My mistake, I was confusing Heal Minor Wounds with Minor Respite. I've never heared of Minor Respite being automatically added, so it could well be a Spell Tomes glitch.

They could still be randomly added just from loading, especially if you created it AFTER installing Spell Tomes, I would guess that's whats causing it. :)

Ok, here are the spells you begin with if you choose the six magic schools at the beginning of the game, according to the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Spells:

  • Alteration - Open Very Easy Lock / Protect
  • Conjuration - Turn Undead / Summon Skeleton
  • Destruction - Cold Touch / Flare (everyone begins with this spell) / Shocking Touch
  • Illusion - Soothing Touch / Starlight
  • Mysticism - Minor Dispel / Minor Life Detection
  • Restoration - Heal Minor Wounds (everyone begins with this spell) / Absorb Health

Do you use any addons? Maybe those spells are just complimentary with an addon/DLC.

Honestly, that's the only valid explanation. If you're not running mods, then there's no way that it could be adding these spells.

Sounds like it might be a bug with Spell Tomes then. Wait, UnOffical DLC? You mean the Unofficial Oblivion Patch and/or Unofficial Official Mods Patch, or the Official DLCs without the UOP/UOMP?
