Spellsword - Robes or Light Armor?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 1:11 am

So, I wanted to make a Breton Spellsword, since I've yet to make a mage-type character. However, I was wondering whether I should use robes or light armor. I was leaning more towards robes for the increase in magicka and magicka regen, and the 25% magic resistance Bretons have helps against mages (clearly). However, light armor protects me in those up-close battles, and is an actual skill which would help in leveling up. Any help from players familiar with spellswords would be appreciated.

I say Light Armor, mostly because there aren't enough unenchanted robes that look good. If you had a wider array of clothing, it'd be one thing, but as it stands Light Armor will give you defense, and likley better enchantments as well.

Spellswords are a melee fighter so I would say light armor.

Light armor.
It's battlemages who wear robes - at least according to the Oblivion class. Spells words focus more on melee combat, so light armor is a must!

So, light armor. I'm guessing I should enchant it with magicka bonuses, if possible?

I'm a Breton Spellsword with heavy armor..

Spoiler
With the steed stone, it's really no different + I have more defence.

On top of that, I've put magicka enchantments on my heavy armor, so it's a suitable fit.

whats the difference between these and Battlemages?

Mostly lore, check the differences between the classes in Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion (skills and descriptions). In Morrowind besides the magic skills the battlemage had heavy armor and possibly two handed weapons (blade, axe, no block skill) and the spellsword medium armor and block which indicates they are supposed to wear a shield and use one handed weapons (blade, blunt, fits with their legion background in Morrowind)

In Oblivion Battlemage's had no armor and Spellswords had heavy armor

Mine uses light armor. First time i had her use heavy armor (like the default Spellsword class did in Oblivion), but that proved to be unnecessary with the alteration armor spells.

The ES Spellsword uses Heavy Armor, One Handed, Destruction and Resto according to Skyrim npcs. In Oblivion they were skilled in Heavy as well. Only Morrowind did they use Medium and Light armor

I'm playing a spellsword and use light armour - all fully enchanted. Right now I'm using Glass as I like the way it looks

I have two spellsword characters. One I play in robes, the other light armor. It all depends on your playstyle. If you are using magic to assist in your fights and are typically in melee range, then light armor. If you are going to rely upon your spells and just use your sword for finishes and parries, then robe. I play both pretty differently and they're both fun and they both kick rear in their separate fashions....

Thanks for clearing that up :), basically the concept of a Battlemage changes.

In at least one in-game book in Skyrim, robed mages are called battlemages by Vivec. So yeah, I'm confused.

No, battlemages wear heavy armor. Spellswords wear minimal armor if any. Perhaps some light armor with a hood?
