Spelunky

Post » Thu Nov 04, 2010 12:31 pm

I just found this little game, http://www.spelunkyworld.com/. It's a platformer game with an Indiana Jones kind of theme to it, with levels that are randomly generated each time you play. You go through these levels collecting treasure, which can be used to buy useful objects, like bombs to clear walls, or climbing gloves, ropes, etc.

It's also rather difficult, and if you're dead you're permanently dead, so it has a bit of a roguelike vibe to it. I haven't managed to make it through all 20 levels yet.

It's pretty addictive, give it a try. :D

This is a fun game. I only played one level and I already noticed how I'm gonna have to manage my resources. I used all my rope getting to a place where, if I dropped in, I wouldn't be able to get out. Very fun.

I never manage to get past the jungle
And those stupid altars only spawn for me when there's nothing to sacrifice

The game hates my guts I swear, but I like it anyway :P

The controls for a gamepad are a lot better, also what is the point of saving the women?

You get a life.
Edit: That sounded like a bad joke. Let me rephrase: you get a hitpoint.

Throw a bomb into the webbing beneath them. It'll kill them instantly almost all the time.

Yeah, they just usually end up below me lol

Also, I found out you can run ontop of the boulder that falls when you take the idol.

Yeah, what's the trick to prevent that? I usually just crouch drop items I've picked up in the shop if I don't want to buy them, while making sure I don't drop them anywhere near the shopkeeper.

The woman is pretty useful for emptying the arrow traps too, it seems that she can take quite a few hits. :P

Also, buy those shortcuts. I bought one at level 5 and now I can start a game there instead if I want to.

And if there's a snake pit, bomb the bottom. There are goodies in the rock there.

Also, toss a bomb into the water. If it blows up at the bottom, it drains and kills the fishies.

I'm a terrible rescuer. I abuse that lady so much.

The shopkeeper tends to kill me while gambling. Pick up the wrong die by accident and you're dead meat :(

I have mixed feelings about buying stuff. On the one hand there's some really handy stuff you can get (climbing gloves), but on the other hand I'm not very good at the game so I'll die at some point anyway, so if I don't buy a lot of stuff then I'll die with a higher score. Or hopefully make it to the next shortcut digger with enough cash. :P

Yea I think I am going to quit buying things, because I got to a shortcut digger and didn't have enough money.

You don't have to give the digger all at once. Anything you give him will go towards the shortcut.
