A "no spiders" option?

They could make options for absolutely every request around here... and rename the game to "The Elder Scrolls V: Toggles".

What was so scary about the Temple of the Ancestor Moths?

Nothing. Just a realization that I may have Mottephobia. If there were giant moths in the game it wouldn't be a big deal. It would probably be satisfying to burn one. Again, if the OP has a serious problem to the point where buying the game is out of the question, then therapy should suffice.

I reckon that:

Noctophobia = fear of the night / darkness (Diophobia would be the fear of daylight, I think)
Abyssophobia = fear of deep waters (and chasms)

Photophobia, I think.

I'd find it pretty sad if Bethesda has to put a spiderphobe option in the game.

I'm a big Elder Scrolls fan (I have Morrowind and it's expansions and Oblivion with it's expansions) and when I saw the spiders in Skyrim I became saddened as it means I won't be able to play it. I may be 6'4" and 185lbs but spiders scare the crap out of me. I won't be able to play the game if I have to see spiders. I hope someone will find a way to remove the spiders and replace them with equally powerful monsters. I was gonna buy this game the instant it came out but I can't do it till the spiders are gone.
THis might help you When someone has a phobia with something the best thing is NOT EXPOSURE im in college and we had to study a bunch of phobias and basically you take very small steps.. for Instance.. lets say your afraid of dogs here are the steps to not be afraid of dogs
1. talk about why you are afraid of dogs with a therapist..nothing more for about a week.
2. look at pictures of dogs until you can look at them and not feel scared..do not see a real one of course just pictures not real life.. this one can take a while because it is essential.
3. Practice being in the vicinity of a very small unthreatening dog that is some what far away from you.. until you are comfortable with that..about a week
4. have the smaller unthreatening dog get closer each week and until you can stand next to it and not be frightened.. then move to a some what bigger dog..
There are tons of techniques like this.. i learned this from taking all of those psychology courses..now put those steps into spiders and you should be ok.. it takes willpower and commitment but you can do it.. obviously the steps will be a bit different because no one wants to hold a spider thats just weird but you get the picture. ALSO and this is very important..never let anyone call you stupid for being scared of spiders..because that can be a set back biologically and mentally.. it may not even be your fault you are afraid of them..so starting this thread probably didn't help because saying not nice things could have been the first thing people thought of but dont blame them because most people just dont understand.

I agree especially because the spiders are fake not real. They aren't going to jump out of the screen and attack you.

These spiders apparently like spinning webs, which you can get stuck in. If you see webs, back out of the dungeon, problem solved

I will definitely try this--it may be quite awhile before I can tolerate having one in my presence without freaking out though! Thanks for the advice. :)

This again?

No, the game should not have options to cater to arachnophobes, hydrophobes, claustrophobes, or any other phobes because as soon as it gets an option for one of them, then it'll have to have options for all of them and then there won't be much of a game left. No water, there's a phobia. No indoors, there's a phobia about enclosed spaces. No outdoors, there's a phobia about open spaces. See how that works?

So yeah, sorry if you're so phobic you can't play the game, but I don't think trying to sanitize fantasy worlds is the proper answer.

So from this thread I see a number of things.
1. To those trying to hide spiders in the links my "friends" on another forum have actually sent me PMs with spiders in them. Rage usually follows.
2. As for exposure that wouldn't be so bad if the spiders were little. I've seen pictures of massive ones bigger than my car.
3. Yes I will just have to wait on a mod to remove the spiders.

Unless it will use up too much disc space I don't see why they can't have a no spiders option... I'm only a bit scared of spiders so I will incinerate them :celebration: :flamethrower:

Not bothered in the least by other people's ignorance. I understand where they are coming from, but it's good if we can educate them enough to understand a little bit.

And I'll join you, Dremora Lord, to incinerate the spiders! I have every intention of making the most of their presence by destroying as many of them as possible--it will become my own side quest, perhaps, to hunt them down until they are no more! Mwahahahahaha!

I wonder why arachnophobia is so prevalent. Spiders have to be one of the least dangerous things on the planet. On average there's less than 1 fatality a year from spider bites worldwide, compared to several hundred domestic dog or bee sting slayings.

I have to admit to not much caring for the little scuttlers myself, but not to the point of irrational terror. If I come across one indoors I generally just stick a glass over it and put it outside. In a video game I LIKE to be scared, up to a point. It's virtual terror from a place of safety - like watching a horror film. It ain't gonna get you really, it's only pixels!

I think the option is a good idea. I won't vote either way because I see valid points to both, and I can't make a decision.

However, it SHOULD be noted to every person in here, as it has be reiterated several times throughout these pages... being AFRAID of spiders is NOT the same as being PHOBIC of spiders.

Being afraid of spiders is like the stereotype of women being afraid of mice and jumping in a chair when seeing it. Being phobic is on the level of going into a temporary period of severe insanity upon interaction with their phobia. You cannot tell someone who has a phobia to get over it, or even so much as to kill the spiders in-game. Why? Because killing them doesn't do anything. Again - It's not the same as being afraid. Another example: Being afraid of spiders allows you to kill the spider, to get rid of your fear. Being phobic would cause you to freeze, hyperventilate, hallucinate that they're crawling all over your body, so you go scratching or taking off clothes to try and get the imaginary spiders off of you. Your body may start to itch.

On a personal level, I think the option would be good for those that are afraid of spiders. That being said, there are a lot of phobias. I am afraid of falling (the actual diagnosis of "afraid of heights." And not the same as acrophobia). But I love roller-coastesr, I hate that feeling of falling, but I will go rappelling and jumping off things. I get excited with adrenaline secreting. Someone who is acrophobic would feint, cry hysterically, etc. So if someone who is acrophobic chose to play, they'd HAVE TO deal with falling or heights.

Even when playing the games and falling, I still feel as if my real being were falling. I go through the symptoms. I also hate swimming in water I can't see in. Heck, I even hate deep water I can see in, lol. It's boderline phobic in some ways. But I love swimming, especially in deep pools. I love diving. But swimming in something I can't see in, even in a game, that is deep? I hate it. I barely can do it.

Anyways... After all this nonsense, my point is... You lot who are treating this topic and those with phobias with such disrespect and disregard need to.... (In attempts to be polite)... educate yourselves and be a little sympathetic. Yes, you have a more than valid point in your argument says there shouldn't be the option. And rightfully so. But do not treat people like trash.

Perhaps the best option is to get the PC version and find a mod that removes them somehow. I hate spiders as well. I am not phobic. I will be deathly afraid of playing versus them, I even get chills thinking about it. But that personally won't stop me. I would love for everyone to get the chance to play the game, however, and would support the function if added.

And I realize I went way off topic, and possibly even flammed. And I apologize greatly for it. But the overwhelming sense of disrespect, I think, needs to be addressed.

LOL if spider did honey it would be different, the same if dogs had 8 legs and lay up to a dozen of eggs.

I wonder if scientisc can genetically alterate spider so that instead of web they produce honey...lol.

I have severe arachnophobia and they don't bother me.

I think your problem is to do with being over-dramatic, not to do with being scared of spiders.

I used to dream of spider crawling all over my body and byting me and slowly turning me into jelly fish and svck me out in a horrible and slow death, waking up screaming, when i had seen a spider during the day.
Is not allucinating, but it s [censored] anyway.

And i got over it, yes there s treatment, yes you can overcome it, and yes people should because its the best for them.
I know some people are so phobic they sometime freeze just at object that remember a spyder in theyr form, but i also know they got over it by threatment.

So i still vote no. I was half phobic and i tamed my damn freakish brain, so other s have and so others can.
As simple as that, as the japonese say gambatee.
