I think the option is a good idea. I won't vote either way because I see valid points to both, and I can't make a decision.
However, it SHOULD be noted to every person in here, as it has be reiterated several times throughout these pages... being AFRAID of spiders is NOT the same as being PHOBIC of spiders.
Being afraid of spiders is like the stereotype of women being afraid of mice and jumping in a chair when seeing it. Being phobic is on the level of going into a temporary period of severe insanity upon interaction with their phobia. You cannot tell someone who has a phobia to get over it, or even so much as to kill the spiders in-game. Why? Because killing them doesn't do anything. Again - It's not the same as being afraid. Another example: Being afraid of spiders allows you to kill the spider, to get rid of your fear. Being phobic would cause you to freeze, hyperventilate, hallucinate that they're crawling all over your body, so you go scratching or taking off clothes to try and get the imaginary spiders off of you. Your body may start to itch.
On a personal level, I think the option would be good for those that are afraid of spiders. That being said, there are a lot of phobias. I am afraid of falling (the actual diagnosis of "afraid of heights." And not the same as acrophobia). But I love roller-coastesr, I hate that feeling of falling, but I will go rappelling and jumping off things. I get excited with adrenaline secreting. Someone who is acrophobic would feint, cry hysterically, etc. So if someone who is acrophobic chose to play, they'd HAVE TO deal with falling or heights.
Even when playing the games and falling, I still feel as if my real being were falling. I go through the symptoms. I also hate swimming in water I can't see in. Heck, I even hate deep water I can see in, lol. It's boderline phobic in some ways. But I love swimming, especially in deep pools. I love diving. But swimming in something I can't see in, even in a game, that is deep? I hate it. I barely can do it.
Anyways... After all this nonsense, my point is... You lot who are treating this topic and those with phobias with such disrespect and disregard need to.... (In attempts to be polite)... educate yourselves and be a little sympathetic. Yes, you have a more than valid point in your argument says there shouldn't be the option. And rightfully so. But do not treat people like trash.
Perhaps the best option is to get the PC version and find a mod that removes them somehow. I hate spiders as well. I am not phobic. I will be deathly afraid of playing versus them, I even get chills thinking about it. But that personally won't stop me. I would love for everyone to get the chance to play the game, however, and would support the function if added.
And I realize I went way off topic, and possibly even flammed. And I apologize greatly for it. But the overwhelming sense of disrespect, I think, needs to be addressed.
