A "no spiders" option?

Post » Sun May 15, 2011 3:10 pm

The option I'm looking at is watching Moddb

Check out http://tesnexus.com/ as well, the main download hub for Elder Scrolls-related mods.
You have a much higher chance of seeing such a mod on it. ;)

Tell you what. I have the game preordered and if the Gamestop by my house is doing a midnight release I promise to have a mod up on TESNexus by the morning, a few days at the latest. I'm not the kind of person who feels like the experience of a game or movie is ruined by knowing things so I'll probably dive into the CK the moment it is available.

Check out the quests first to see if a spider is related to it.
Replace it with something better...say a lair of sheep? Deers? :P

Have you ever heard of "exposure". In a planned and purposeful way you expose yourself to your fear (in the game of course). You then stay with that fear until you calm down and see that you're still ok. Of course, these spiders are trying to kill you, so you might want to fight back as well... Hopefully you'll still be ok. Well, YOU will be, your character maybe not so much. By the way, I actually learned of this technique, it's name anyway, from Batman unmasked.

Exposure is a useful psychiatric tool, but only if it's monitored and dealt with accordingly. If you have a serious fear of spiders I wouldn't suggest getting the game until you've at least attempted to get over that phobia through traditional therapy (luckily you still have plenty of time before the game comes out).

Therapy might be expensive, but you don't want to translate the perceived "man-killing" aspects of the game to spiders in real life, where you won't have magic or swords to protect yourself.

Whatever you decide to do, don't let your mental health suffer.

This is like the 9001st time I've heard this being discussed...

I have really bad arachnophobia to the point where my whole body will lock up from just looking at a spider... That being said, I would HATE it if they removed them from this game. Seriously, I wish there could be more enemies that I can actually fear that much.

And also, I'm sorry to sound like a jerk, but if you're too afraid to play a game because it has spiders in it, then you either need to man up, or turn in your man card...

Actually don't a ton of games have a no blood option? That's been in games since at least the original unreal tournament from 1999.

EDIT: The FBI is right, the no blood option wasn't about hemophobia, so it's not a terrible example.

But my point is, there are a LOT of phobias out there. Some may or may not be involved in Skyrim, but if they are, you can't ask the devs to eliminate them all. Then you're left with a pretty bland game. Spiders are far from my favorite creatures, mind you, but that makes it all the more enjoyable to cut them to ribbons.

Exactly... I also have a friend with arachnophobia and he doesn't even care if they are in the game. And even though I hate the harmful type of spiders very much I don't mind looking at them either as long as they don't come in contact with me because as long as they don't they aren't a threat.

There has only ever been a no-blood option because of controversy and other related things.

I agree, there are different levels of phobias (I personally don't mind spiders unless I think of huge ones like Camel Spiders, or this one unfortunate incident when I felt one crawling on my face while I slept *shudders*). My mom completely shuts down if she sees anything bloodier than a papercut in real life but can manage with television just fine.

Seen this thread a million times. Fears are many and varied. You can be afraid of spiders, someone else can be afraid of water, but the fact of the matter is that it's your own problem to resolve and a part of reality. Bethesda shouldn't censor parts of the game just to make it more enjoyable to the smallest minority of players.

Just drill it into your mind that these spiders aren't real. There are spiders in real life that you can be afraid of, but these things are just colorful pixels on a monitor. Logic triumphs all. If you can't do that, I recommend a mod, but quite frankly I don't think your proposed toggle option has any more merit than the thousands of other proposed toggle options. Same goes for the people who are afraid of blood. And heights. And dragons.

Exposure isn't the nicest way to overcome a phobia, that's for sure. I suggest if someone has a severe spider phobia that they research a technique that goes by a few names - fast phobia cure, V-K dissociation or rewind technique. Originally developed In the field of NLP now used by a variety of therapists such as hypnotherapists and in Human Givens. Very hard to perform this on yourself, it's tricky. Find someone well experienced, and who hopefully doesn't charge too much. If they can't cure the phobia in one or two sessions then leave - they're incompetent.
Good luck!

I'm a big Elder Scrolls fan (I have Morrowind and it's expansions and Oblivion with it's expansions) and when I saw the spiders in Skyrim I became saddened as it means I won't be able to play it. I may be 6'4" and 185lbs but spiders scare the crap out of me. I won't be able to play the game if I have to see spiders. I hope someone will find a way to remove the spiders and replace them with equally powerful monsters. I was gonna buy this game the instant it came out but I can't do it till the spiders are gone.

...please tell me you are joking. This is sadder than having to do the contracter's job at work (who got paid more than me) because he was too scared of heights to be on a stepladder that I was holding to keep stable.

I'd prefer to have spiders removed. I'm not scared of them, but I REALLY don't like them either. But seriously, they could have added something else like the Ice Wraiths, but nooooooo, we've just got to add spiders the size of a freakin' car. <_<

Phobias are not rational fears (strong cases, at least). Belittling someone over a fear they can't control is not really a nice thing to do, and certainly doesn't help.

I have both a fear of heights and spiders. Though they're not that strong to keep me from playing a game, I do understand very well what it's like. It's not something that'll go away just by telling them to "man up" or that "it's fake".

If you hate spiders...shouldn't beating them over the head with swords and magic make you feel better? I know thats how it is for me. Hate spiders, and whenever I kill a nice big one in a game I always feel a little better about myself. Small ones are creepy, but the big ones are just ugly, and a bigger target.

i guess a psichologist will agrees this kind of again-phobia therapy

I have somehow developed a phobia of sharks. What's weird is that I don't like swimming in water that I can't see through. I still do it though, unless its the ocean. When I play video games, I get a slight adrenaline rush when my character is swimming in a large body of water, but in a good way. For me its almost like riding a roller coaster. The dreughs(spelling) in morrowind freaked me out the first time I saw one rushing towards me. When I played that crappy Scarface game, a freakin shark actually jumped out of the water and ate me. That phobia seems to make games funner for me. Just go in and bash the crap outa the spiders. If you get overwhelmed just look away and remember its a game.

This gives you a chance to unleash your anger upon ze spider by bashing it's face in with a mace! Have no fear!

On a side note I'm sure someone will make a mod for those that are arachnophobia.

I feel kinda bad for you OP. I myself have arachnophobia as well, so extreme as to the point that I literally jumped out of a moving vehicle that I WAS DRIVING when a mid-sized spider jumped on my leg and started crawling up it. That being said, I love seeing spiders in video games, because it means I get to smash the living hell out of one of my worst nightmares. It's a thrill! You should seriously find a game that has spiders in one small part of it, and play up to that part and just sit there and kill t hem over and over in small doses until you're more comfortable with them being in the game.

I understand where you're coming from. When I was younger, I had a HUGE fear over bees. Well I remember playing Crash Bandicoot on the first playstation and there was a level with bees in it... I simply coudn't play that level without getting horribly frightened. EVEN when they're poorely made pixels, the fact that they represent bees and sound like them was enough to scare me.

Eventually I got over this fear though and eventually you will too ;) Because after all, they are just pixels.

Maybe that wouldn't help a person get over it, but they should know not to let fear control their lives. Like I said, I'm deathly afraid of arachnids, and where I live, we get some of the biggest, ugliest, scariest ones you can think of. So during the summer/fall I have to deal with those on almost a daily basis... And it svcks, but I still do it...

Also, I think it's cool to have monsters in video games that can scare the living bejesus out of me. That's why I would be disappointed if they were removed.

My friend. In order to conquer your fear, you must confront it.

In all honesty though, I'm sure a modder could fix this for those that aren't big fans of spiders.

I'm scared of heights. There should be a "no heights" option in Skyrim or else i won't buy it. Just get rid of the mountains... NOT!!

You said you were a fan of Morrowind, no? were the dwemer spiders not life-like enough to scare you?

because your phobia seems to be pretty crippling, I suggest you overcome your fear.

The best way to overcome your fear is to immerse yourself in it. If your so scared of spiders, force yourself to watch spider movies and whatnot. look at pictures of spiders. you'll overcome... i believe in you.
