A "no spiders" option?

Post » Sun May 15, 2011 11:14 pm

If you hate spiders...shouldn't beating them over the head with swords and magic make you feel better? I know thats how it is for me. Hate spiders, and whenever I kill a nice big one in a game I always feel a little better about myself. Small ones are creepy, but the big ones are just ugly, and a bigger target.

I'm scared of spiders worms slugs undead and darkness in dungeons I'm scared of zombies trolls , and the combat music with no visible target because I know any of the above will sneak up on me. I turn the brightness right up on a certains games zombie mode. And in real life I'm scared of almost anything that moves and isn't, human. Minus sheep from afar or cows from afar.

I'm still gonna buy skyrim though . in oblivion the giant spiders were red had heads and shot lightning. The op may have problems with skyrim spiders though

I don't like spiders in games because, like rats, developers tend to make them giant for some reason I don't know

If they didn't then you wouldn't be able to fight them, just step on them.

I always feel like the odd on out when it comes to spiders. I love them. They just don't freak me out. That being said though, I can understand why someone would like to see a way to remove them. But Bethesda shouldn't do it. Let them focus on more important issues.

One could always attend help for phobias during the summer, that would help you through life easier and also through Skyrim easier

And most spider / insect phobic persons aren't actually scared of them per ce, it's because they are so small that it creeps them to death. If Spiders would be as big as they are in Skyrim, you shouldn't feel the same as if you saw a spider smaller than your finger. :/

No. It would be kind of funny to see "No spiders" option in the options menu.
Besides, they would pretty much have to make new designs for the dungeons with spiders and other stuff related to them? It'd be kind of stupid if a spider-dungeon with webs and stuff was completely empty or replaced with zombies or something. Dunno what modders will do about this though.

I do understand some might be afraid of them to this extent, as I have a phobia too (not spider though, I actually like spiders). I have emetophobia, and I get really nervous even if someone just coughs a bit harder than usually, and I tend to avoid everything that might cause someone or me to throw up. There have been a couple of video games with vomiting and those have made me panick a bit, and in my opinion fearing that isn't much different than being afraid of spiders. Zombies may kind of vomit and that doesn't really make me feel all cheery. However, I just deal with it.

If you cannot stand something, you could always avoid it if you have a chance to.
I personally would still buy this game if there was something I feared. ;D

I can sympathize with the OP. I'm not sure if I have or ever had a phobia, but entering the Temple of Ancestral Moths in Oblivion made me [censored] bricks. Just seeing that there caused me to pause for a moment. I voted "no" because if I have a problem I get over it. I understand that some people literally become insane over little random things, but unless you have brain damage there is always a way to overcome any fear.

I'm looking forward to killing spiders, it's much more enjoyable in games where they are big.

Why? It's just a carbon life form, whats so special about it? They aren't even dangerous for the most part.

Ive never really understood extreme phobia, it's just a mind over matter thing. Why not try to understand that a spider is just a organism that eats and sleeps just like you do and has no reason to even harm you unless you endanger it in some way.

Really?

In couple of weeks I wouldn't be surprised if some said: "I have claustrophobia so what about an option to remove dungeons?"

Im afraid of spiders too. But I deal with it in another way. I crush them beneath my boots. I see one I crush it... I turned my fear of them into aggresion and it works to an extent. Kinda odd watching a guy chase a spider down to try and smash it. So I dont do that. But if its in easy reach I will do it.

I Voted no

Fire magic I would imagine would do alot against a frost spider... Or just a big axe or warhammer. I need to crush them. I wish I could use my Power boots. (angry marines referance)

Personally, I don't quite know what it feels like to have my phobias transfer over to an artificial world (I have my phobias, but the video game/movie/book versions of what I fear have never scared me ), but I do know how irritating it can be when people don't quite understand your phobias and/or are unwilling to think of how anyone else could possibly react to certain things differently than them... especially considering a phobia is, by its very defition, an irrational fear... which means applying rational thought does no/little good to help out one's phobia (looking at you people who think it can easily be overcome or should easily be overcome :stare:). So, I voted yes. However, I'm curious to know why arachnophobia is so prevalent and seems to get translated even into video game characters so much more easily than other phobias, now.

No, I have a fear of deep water but I'm not going to ask Jagex to take away all the lakes and rivers.

You just have to deal with it.

So far the trailer is rated Mature... There is scary stuff included... Also Spiders...

If you have to, roleplay your character to be scared of giant spiders and run for it if you see them (and hope they are not a big part of the main quest).

I wonder this as well. So I guess the question is "Should there be a No Spiders option just because arachnophobia possibly is more common than other phobias in video games?" If it's not more common then there is no reason for the option as otherwise there should also be options like "No zombies", "No darkness", "No deep water", "No Adoring Fan" :D

Well, I'm afraid of corpses (germiphobia, hemophobia, and whatever a phobia of dead things is), I'm afraid of darkness, and I'm afraid of deep water, but those things do not translate into video games... hence my curiousity.

I have an extreme fear of dragons. Can they please remove dragons from this game?

Obviously Bethesda cannot cater to every single phobia and issue people might have with the game. You are not any more special due to a fear of spiders than anyone else is due to his or her own issues that may cause them to not want to play. I am not being insensitive or anything, that is the truth. I know someone who is so afraid of zombies that they will not play games with zombies in them yet nobody is going to ask that zombies be removed from Skyrim. Unfortunately you simply have to make a choice for yourself.

Is this a joke thread honestly?

If i see one of those big spiders in my house I run out the room and make somebody move it out. Then im on edge for a few hours cos I think another one might come back :cryvaultboy:
Basically im very scared of real spiders but I cant imagine why one in a game would scare anybody. The thought never occured to me since it is just a cartoon and clearly fake

What was so scary about the Temple of the Ancestor Moths?

As for the OP, I can understand having an irrational fear of something (I'm scared of bees and wasps, myself, though I wouldn't call that a phobia), but if they're in the game, you'll either have to mod them out or deal with it. They're not real, if anything, whacking them with a big sledgehammer should be slightly theraqeutic. You can't expect Bethesda to cater to everyone, otherwise they'd have to remove the open spaces for agoraphobics, the dungeons for claustrophobics, the water for hydrophobics, the zombies for necrophobics, and everything even remotely scary for phobophobics. I'm sorry, but that's the way it is. :)

I think it would be too much work for Bethesda to come up with a proper solution. Get the PC version, a modder is bound to come along and make a no spider patch.

I'm pretty sure you can deal with Spiders in the game. You can probably just avoid the quests and caves where they live and do something else. You can on PC get a mod to replace them with something else.

Now, the agoraphobiacs, THOSE need help from Bethesda in the form of an option cause I bet they'll not be able to play the game correctly with that! Think of the agoraphobiacs!
