[REQ] Spiked Buckler

Post » Thu Sep 30, 2010 1:34 pm

I like to play a sneaky character who relies more on Marksmanship than melee skills.
However, I do use Blade quite often, but I really don't like sneaking around with this gigantic shield hanging on my arm.

There are no small shields in this game.
I would like a small spiked buckler, with a diameter no larger than the length of a character's forearm.

It doesn't necessarily need to be spiked, either. Any small shield would do. Even a shrinked down version of the round Iron Shield.

Thanks!

Of all the existing shields in the vanilla game, I prefer the Iron Shield.
I generally don't like the armors and shields that look all extravagant.
I feel like Megaman walking around in Glass Armor. :P

Hey, thanks. I didn't even think of that shield model. Looks good :)
It's a tad shiny, but I should be able to fix that myself, thanks :D

Well, yes, I think I scaled the bumps too much :D But it won't shine as badly if you don't have HDR or Bloom enabled xD

EDIT: Think the shine as a thick layer of lacquer :D

So, I don't mean to be too nitpicky here, but I was wondering if you would mind adjusting the mesh of the shield some? :3

The handle is a bit off center, and it'd be nice if you could fix this and have the shield a little more centered on the characters' arms.

I tried to do it myself, but I've never used 3DMax or Nifskope, so I'm just at a loss. :P

That shield is actually really awesome. You're right vdeity, Oblivion is missing bucklers, but that's a pretty awesome one Sami. Don't suppose there's a chance of any more :whistling: ...

So, when I said it the handle should be centered, I didn't mean exactly dead center, otherwise, the shield would stick out pretty far past the player's fist.
I put some dots on this picture of the shield showing where I think the handle would look good,

Well, ain't that just weird... For me it looked better :D Well, I'll re-align the handle :P I'll update the file when done, and reply back here.

I was thinking of some different materials. How about a fairly plain steel one, nice and small with a shiny steel frame and wooden panels. I made a http://www.squidweb.co.uk/megamatty/buckler.JPG, I hope it gets my idea across. The circle in the middle is the large rounded lump (I've forgotten the proper name), and is made of steel, as is the the frame around the edge. The four panels would be made of wood. Then maybe that could retextured for different materials, like mithril.

Ah, you work pretty quick. :)
I like the forearm strap in the update.

It's so close! I found a clipping issue D:

http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/5306/21331246.jpg

My fingers poke out when the character is idling with her weapon out.
But when she's blocking or when she's idling with her weapon sheathed, it seems to be fine.
I didn't test while walking or anything, I dunno if that'll make a difference.

Maybe I will now :o

I have to say, The Greatness, your task has proven to be a worthy opponent :D Shape is already done, that was the easy part, but the texturing... Oh boy, the texturing :D I will try to work something out but so far it has been a real pain in the ass :D

Could you use the vanilla steel texture for the rim and the same texture you used last time for the wood?

Also, what program are you using? Blender? I've never tried modelling but I've been amazed at how fast you've made these and I've become rather tempted to have a go...

Blender indeed ^_^ It's pretty easy when you've got the basics covered. I took the liberty of modeling the shield to suit my taste better, sorry for that :D http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/8636/screenshot192.jpg, http://a.imageshack.us/img529/2796/screenshot194v.jpg, http://a.imageshack.us/img62/5613/screenshot193q.jpg. As you can see, some problems still persist :D

Looks nice B) , but, erm, what's going on in picture 2?

EDIT: Have you ever tried to make a tileset in Blender? Because that's probably what I'd like to do most if I learnt to model.

The picture is taken from the arm's side of the shield. The texture seems to twist for some reason :D That's one of the problems I mentioned... I will see if I can implant a static plate to cover the area with a better texture :D

What comes to the tilesets, the answer is unfortunately no. I have only used Blender to edit existing models, and for making animations for NPCs.
