SPOILER Map Makeup

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 8:17 am

I know there is another thread about map size but this doesn't pertain to that.

I have seen the leaked full map of Fallout 4. Almost half; about 40% is water.

I know water will play a large role in the game and there will be underwater elements. However if you see the right side of the map it looks like plain water with almost no small islands or small landmasses. It almost appears to be wasted space instead of simply pushing the map to the left slightly and having more land with still having a ton of water.

Does anyone else find this slightly odd that has seen the map? Do you think there will be boats or something to make the amount of blank water make sense? Having just played the witcher 3 I have to say in the second zone traveling in the water felt very empty and repetitive.

Thoughts anyone or theories? I'm interested in other perspectives!

Well that's disappointing. Looks like water is going to be this game's just-a-little-too-steep-to-climb-mountain.

The thing is on most places on the map the water is distributed perfectly. Then on the right side is just massive empty water (25%) of the total map. There has to be something up like an underwater city? I can't imagine it would just be useless water.. But I don't know.

Ooh! Imagine if there were underwater vaults or the BoS has an underwater base.

this is from leak so u know i will take everything with a little grain of salt. "The actual land area of the Fallout 4 map is roughly 30 square miles. That is about twice the size of Skyrim in addition to not having all the mountains."

But it is also scaled down to roughly about the size of Skyrims map.

It worries me that there will be the amusemant park feel that Skyrim had. All of the great locales cramped together on 2/3 of the map due to such a large body of water.

Has anyone counted how many tiles are in the water? Fallout 3 was 18x18 while 4 looks to be 28x28. Count those tiles to see how much it truly represents for the surface area.

Well, think about FNV.. it too was on a huge square map but the actual playable bits weren't nearly as big as the full map. Also, just because the map is showing areas of water doesn't necessarily mean they are still water. Could be a lot of dried up area. We haven't had any screen shots of someone looking out over the ocean yet so who knows.

The water is like the big mountain on Skyrim. There are important things to do there, and some places to see there.

Yeah I can't see that much useless water space. I really hope it is flushed out.

I saw some leaked info too, but i can not think the water is useless and honestly 40 % is water is for me a bit overreacted. I would either say 30 %

We still don't know the real scale of the map.

I still have good hopes for the scale and the actual content of the map.

FNV was big but empty, real empty

Let's look at skyrim, people have been playing since launch and are still finding Easter eggs etc. I'm not worried by a large area of water, there's probably caves or an underwater city to explore, sunken ships etc. Bethesda ain't lazy, there's something out there...

That is my hope as well. I was surprised there were not more little islands though .

I'm no longer so sure underwater exploration is a thing. None of the leakers have mentioned it, you'd think they would have.

Hope that's not the reason for their more-than-usual levels of secrecy...........

if you looked at a map of the real world Boston area you might notice that a lot of it is open water....

Those open bits of water on the east are the bay off Boston and the Atlantic Ocean, kind of hard to dry those up....

Ok guys enough puns! ;)

Seriously though, I'm more or less planing on putting part of my quest line on a hulk, this just makes things easier.

If FO4 is indeed 40% water, then TES fans who always wanted Beth to do Black Marsh should start wondering about TES6. ^^

Takes 11 minutes to cross from the upper left side of the map to the lower right side.

Yeah, I was going to mention that as well. Boston is a port city, it's literally sitting there with Boston Harbor, a bay, and a frickin' ocean. So it doesn't surprise me in the slightest to see that there's going to be a lot of water. Besides, our character can swim, so it's not like it's a hazard to our health.

I just hope Bethesda put interesting things underwater unlike what GTA V did with its water...

It takes around 30 minutes to jog side to side across Skyrim,

but we don't know the ratios of Skyrim jogging speed to Fallout sprinting speed.

One thing Bethesda games have never lacked is content and a plethora of locations to explore. Regardless of map size.

(Also yes - I would expect a game set in Boston to have a map that is bordered by water on the east side.)

11 minutes doesn't sound like 4x the size of skyrims 30 minutes. I didn't see him pass to much either on that 11 minute journey. Running speed cant be much different.

Yeah, it will definitely not be "you cannot go that way" after you swim a little further from the shore or the water being "too irradiated" leading to certain death etc etc...... will it?

Maybe I am just a pessimist..... or am I?

I am sure the rest of the map will make up for it... or will it? It should, it's Bethesda.

It did have a big invisible wall at the end, there were no mountains or real obstacles and in Spanish said something about not being able to go further.

I am fully expecting that we'll have the invisible wall accompanied with "you cannot go this way" if we swim too far out into the ocean. I also trust Bethesda isn't going to just give us all this water without anything worth interest below it to explore. Like an underwater vault. That would be a real shame if there was nothing to explore down there.
