Ok, so I posted this on the Steam discussion page for Fallout 4, but considering that it's launch day and at only 22 mins since posting, I'm already on page 14, I'm not expecting a response on there.

Ok, so some idiot(s) has been posting the following (or variations of it) everywhere - in Steam review comments, on Metacritic and elsewhere:

My question is, if this is even true, is this something that happens at the beginning / prologue section or is it an "end-game" reveal?

I've never played a Fallout game before and I'd love to dive into FO4 but I don't want to bother if all the important plot stuff has been ruined by The Internet. However if it's just something that happens at the beginning to set up the plot, well, that's still annoying but I'd at least buy the game, in that case.

Serves me right for looking up reviews rather than just buying it outright, I guess.

I'm not sure 'villain' is apt. Shaun is alive and well but 60 years have passed and now he is old and runs The Institute and is attempting to build what he believes can be salvation for mankind in the form of the perfect synthetic technologies. You have the option to side with Shaun if you believe Shaun is right and not the Brotherhood. In the end I guess it's subjective who one would ask is the villain though. So that's up to you to determine.

Ya there's no "big bad", all the factions are more or less morally grey. I also didn't see or hear mention of blowing up all of Boston (and there probably isn't an option to since you can play post-ending), but I think you can blow up the Institute.

Your son is the leader of the syndicate, which aren't completely evil from what they make you think, although you believe you saw him unfreeze like 10 mins before you got out, but that time was actually like 60 years.

End game spoiler,

Yes it's correct and you blow the location of the CID building up with a nuke underground, meaning the size of 5-6 football stadiums is a massive creator fulled with water and rad.

Btw I didn't try to (partly cause I actually wanted to side with the Institute, partly cause I assumed you can't anyway), but can you kill him ? Either through choices or simply shooting his face off on sight ?

When the CID blows up? no, i did not even see him to confirm if he died or escaped, i'm guessing that's DLC turf. although i don't know the endings without BOS
