How do I advance the main quest line with the Minutemen? I have just finished the Institutionalized quest and was given the Synth Retention quest by Father. I take it this is the Institute arc, which I don't want to do, but there is no option to carry on with the Minutemen.
I have started, but I will not do, the From Within and Outside the Wire quest for the Brotherhood, so I hope this isn't the reason why I can't as I don't have a save for hours before I spoke with Elder Maxson.

You can fail any of the Institution's quests (kill the Courser escort, let the Synth go, etc..), and then be given a chance to talk to Father about getting back in. If you choose to split, the Institute becomes hostile to you, and you'll be given a quest where the Institute attacks one of your allies. If that's the Minute Men, then that's where you need to go. Just talk to Preston.

To get onto "Destroy Institute" or "Destroy BoS" questlines, just make those factions hostile.
