Sports or politics?

Post » Mon Jan 27, 2014 6:56 am

With the super bowl coming up and all I started to remember a intriguing fact. Apparently there was or maybe still a time when people all over America watched the super bowl a lot more than anything concerning politics such as the presidential nomination. Now when I heard this I was curious to why people prefer to watch a bunch guys tackling one another to reach the goal than watch of how our future could change life itself, so the purpose of this thread is to see which is more important to the community, and I love to hear your reasoning for why one is more important then the other.

Let's just say that the outcome of any sports event has no effect on my life. Can't say that about the other choice.

You may have interchanged 'important' with 'entertaining'. Political conventions are more important, but the Super Bowl is far more entertaining. I watch both, though the transcripts of political speeches are generally more useful than the video.

What's there to talk about? It's basic human nature; what you need and what you want don't always coincide. Sports may be pointless entertainment, but they're far more exciting to watch for most people. They got action, people running around tackling each other, and girls in skimpy outfits jumping up and down. In politics, you just have a bunch of old guys talking, with half of them being completely WRONG because they don't share your beliefs or opinions.

This pretty much sums it up nicely, like a definite integral used in Gauss's law.

I don't actively watch sports, and I can't say I've ever been very interested in doing so. Politics is something I don't follow actively either, but I do keep myself updated on current events.

as someone who hates sports, and works for the provincial government, I'd go with politics

I agree completely. I also think it's worth adding that a lot of the big political events that are televised are really just pomp and circumstance - and ignoring this doesn't demonstrate a lack of political interest. So not only is it more enjoyable to read a speech or political development versus reading about a sports game - it's probably more substantive to read about politics rather than watch it on TV :)

Thanks for agreement. I have to mention that there is frequently a huge and amusing difference when you read about a speech and when you read the transcript of the speech. At least in American national politics the misuse of sound-biting and out of context quoting has very nearly arrived at the art-form level.

Not a big sports person, but it's not hard to see why. If I wanted to watch people ham it up on the camera, I'd watch a movie, not some dross from a politician saying how s/he will help reform our governments into the golden age of (insert country). At least sports can be entertaining. I don't care for football (US and EU), but I do enjoy things like golf, they're more fun than listening to politicians. About the only political things I actually try to put effort in keeping up with beyond whatever I hear on NPR is news out of the DPRK.

Considering that one of the main purposes of sports is to serve as entertainment, I can't say that it's surprising that people find them to be more interesting. I like sports myself, but I also enjoy political debates and politics in general so I'd put that above sports any time.

People don't always care which is better for them--they just want to be entertained.
