Spotlight Woes

Post » Tue Mar 05, 2013 1:02 pm

I want a focused beam of sunlight inside a cave that casts shadows, so I've added a spotlight, narrowed it's FOV and increased brightness (as well as a beam FX with emission). It successfully lights the area and objects I want it to and looks perfect at certain angles, but it also does weird things with the cave walls, sometimes lighting them up but then not lighting them when I turn my head in game or move forward a step or two (I don't want them lit at all by this particular light). So far, it's the only light other than ambient in the room, since I want to build the lighting around that effect. Any idea why it's being funky?

A few things to note/check:

- There can only be 4 shadow lights rendered at once. If more than 4 are in your screen (even through walls) they stop showing altogether.
- Pieces can only be lit by oh so many lights, go to properties > Shaders > Number and tweak the lighting so that no areas are ever RED. Solid red is bad and can create lighting issues/flickering pieces.
- Roombounds affect rendering and how many lights show, so make sure there aren't weird roombounds culling your shadow light, and that if you have more than 4 in your level, that others are culled so that only <= 4 show at a time.

It's the only light I've placed so far, so there are no competing shadowcasters. The desired area is lit as expected, but it seems to be also casting light on things I don't want it to.
