Spring has sprung!

Grass... hole?

Also, hemispheres damnit! It's autumn here, but as soon as we turned the clocks back the weather just turned to absolute crap, it's bloody freezing.

So true. I love cold weather, but I hate how it gets so dark early.

Ehh, I'm not convinced. Here in Western Maryland the temps keep swinging back and forth, and have been for the last month. One week it's in the 70's, a day later it's snowing(literally happened). The last week the temps have been going from 75-80 to 40 on a daily basis. It's insanity.

Well,

The car went through the ice on the local lake here in town. :celebration:

Why is that a good thing? It's an anual fund raiser for the Lions Club and a practice event for Fire Rescue. BUT, it means that the ice, and winter is finally done here. Some weren't sure that it was ever going to go. IN fact, opening day of fishing was pushed back a couple weeks up north because of ice still on the lakes (and late spawns). The family is oh so happy; my little boy has been watching his grass-hole grow for a week now! (when we got 12 inches of snow a couple weeks ago, he evened shoveled his grass-hole :)

And as I'm sitting here in a coffee shop, procrastinating on some grant writing, I'm overhearing a police officer chatting about another sign of spring: maple sap flow. The season just ended here, and 150 4th graders came out to the school forest to make maple syrup. It was a strange season, but we got about 300 (dumped 60 due to spoilage) gallons of sap which is about average. We shut down the boiler yesterday. Good times!

So, what does spring mean for you? What are its signs? Do you have any traditions? Come, share the srping sunshine!

Still no cars breaking through the ice here yet nor is the birch sap flowing yet. But there are a few pvssywillows blooming and snow melting. Our temp got up to 46 F. yesterday. No tracks to indicate the bears have awoken but I imagine they will be up soon. I'm watching for the geese to arrive but they haven't made it here either. There are snow free spots around many of the trees in the woods. Water dripping from the rooftop. So yes...thank heaven spring is almost here.

Sounds like you're only a couple weeks behind us here.

I tried tapping a white/paper birch a few years ago, and the sap that came out looked...erm...like thick puss. What is it supposed to look like?

Spring? What nonsense!

Indeed. Such blatant hemispheric bias. SHFERRIRTTAS should take action against this thread! We'll begin with a letter writing campaign!

Dear rumblyguts,

It's actually mid-autumn here. All of our cars would sink in the lake.

Okay. That should be enough campaigning for this year.

Should look like thick water. Clear and colorless.

Too early, too late or too deep a tap.
