SSD Solid State Disk: Does it make a difference?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:29 am

As the title says. Please just briefly tell me your experience with Oblivion installed on an SSD harddisk: Did it make your game run smoother? Load faster? I'm especially interested to hear from folks who run a FCOM setup or otherwise heavily modded game.

I'm about to buy a SSD, not only because of Oblivion. But I reckon the file (textures etc.) loading/streaming should improve quite a bit and any loading stutter should diminish to a degree. Sidenote: I'm already using Stutter Remover, Pyffie-fication etc. and my game doesn't stutter that much. I'm quite happy as is, I'm just thinking that an SSD might give it another little notch of improvement?

Maybe I should mention that I still have WinXP 32-bit on my Oblivion PC, and I don't really want to go to Win7 on this one.

I understand there is some TRIM function in Win7 which is good to have if you have a SSD. So I'm wondering if an SSD under WinXP is suffering any performance degradation over time? I admit I am not really well educated on this SSD thing. Please kindly bear with me.

Thanks so much for your comments and insights. :)

I installed it to my 60GB OCZ Vertex last year when I got it, and I really didnt see a huge difference then when I had it installed to my 300GB Velociraptor. (Fallout 3 there is a huge improvement). But I ran FCOM for a while on there, I did notice a slight increase in performance, I didnt think it was worth keeping it on the drive taking up space.

... and that was already with Win 7 64-bit as your OS or XP still at that time?

Somewhat sobering report... I expected a little more positive endorsemant... :(

I used Windows 7. It was installed on another partition of the drive.

Well I'm going to have to disagree. I noticed a pretty significant decrease of load times and definitely the amount of time taken after a load for the game to really kick in. It wasn't necessarily mind-shatteringly faster, but to me it was definitely noticeable and definitely worth it, especially if you're running mass amounts of mods. And I'm also running Win7 64x.
