Stable FCOM CTD troubleshooting

Greetings to all of you! I first want to tell all of the wonderful modders here:

...because without your work, Oblivion would simply be a footnote in the annals of my gaming - not the best game ever!

And now - for my problem. (Sorry!)

I finally got the drive to install Oblivion with a full install of all of the mods I love and have gotten it stable! It runs for 1-1.5 hrs before crashing due to memory shortages, and I've had no persistent CTDs, until yesterday.

Note: I do see that AVUncapper_CS.dll isn't initializing correctly, but I'm not exactly sure how to activate it despite reading that I must make a dummy file for it. I don't know what that means exactly, but I doubt it's the source of the problem.

The problem:
The current save game has me about to pluck the sigil stone from a gate directly to the West of Skingrad, just south of the main road outside there. When I take the stone, everything goes fine just up until I finish loading the exterior worldspace of Tamriel. Extremely repeatable. Upon realization that it was the worldspace causing the problem, I tried teleporting out of there and entering the worldspace from Skingrad. Exiting the West gate causes the same immediate CTD, where exiting from the Eastern gate does not. I used TCL to fly around towards the offending region, and *just* as I reach the western gate, the crash occurs again.

I tried moving all over the worldspace, seeking out other gates to see if the gate was the problem. Other gates showed up just fine, and allowed me to enter. I approached the region from the West (from Anvil), and was able to get within throwing distance of the gate I was originally stuck inside before the crash would occur. Approaching from the North let me come as close as another gate (I can't remember the exact location, but it was not far), and from the South I was just able to cross the river to the South of Skingrad before CTD.

When loading from saves just inside the starting sewer area, I took new characters into the region and found no problems. My level 15 character is the only one experiencing the crash. I do not believe it is graphical in nature, but I don't have the experience to troubleshoot this far.

I have cleaned all of my mods that required cleaning as prompted by BOSS via TES4Edit, though most of these are installed via OMOD (yeah I'm lazy - many are done via BAIN too).


Lastly:
I recall that Skycaptain had a problem whilst testing DR 6 (god I wish that was stable) that was very similar in nature to what I'm experiencing. If anyone was around when he had this problem, do they remember how he solved it? Does anyone know if there's a specific reason as to why this would occur? Lastly, are there any tools or methods I can use to discern the nature of the crash, be it missing resource or scripting error? I do not have any real experience in programming, but I do understand very basic computer logic relatively well and pick things up quickly (for the most part!).

If any of the readers of this board have any suggestions or other information that would help identify the problem, let me know and I'll post it asap. This is the most stable FCOM/BC/UL setup I've ever made, and I want to preserve it!

I forgot to mention all of the troubleshooting I had done up to this point. I had begun to deactivate mods (starting with those I felt were most likely to cause the problem) to find the culprit, but it was taking quite awhile. Eventually I shut down ALL mods - and the crash STILL happened. I even turned off OBSE and ran Oblivion from the CD launcher and the crash STILL happened. Does this mean there's a save game problem, or something I have not yet mentioned? I don't know the significance of this, but it seems to me that there's more at work here than I understand.

I had an issue with the area around Sancre Tor and Ninendava trying to get my Vampire kill count to 100, I tried the same area with a different character to check if it was just the character I was playing. Once I determined that it was just the one character, I did deactivate a few mods and tried waiting three days for a respawn. I could coc into Ninendava, but I could not get near the exterior world around it.
I decided to use an earlier save and I was able to get into this area with no issues at all and get my Light of Dawn its second boost. The only difference between the two saves was joining the Mages Guild and getting the "Fingers of the Mountain", I was able to do the Mages Guild quest later and the issue never repeated itself.
I hope you can achieve this same kind of result, because I know what it is like to lose hours of playtime trying to fix this kind of problem.

There are people far more knowledgeable in the ways of Oblivion, but I've got a couple of suggestions/troubleshooting ideas.

1: Just to narrow down the problem, have you tried waiting/sleeping for 24 hours (or better: 3 days), than moving into the area?
2: The fact that you're still crashing after removing all mods implies there's something in your save game. Did you try removing all your mods, saving, then reloading and entering the area?

From what you've said, it sounds like you could get away with continuing with the game, then returning later. From your symptoms, I bet whatever is causing the crash will no longer be an issue after the cell resets. You could leave, continue playing, then come back in a week of game time.

EDIT: bradleyh's suggestion to reload an older save is a safer and better idea than my "ignore it" suggestion. But I think it's worth a shot to rest for a few days and see if the issue disappears.

I've been just saving them in case of corruption...so I'll just save over the oldest file. As such, there's no going to an older save.

Here's hoping Skyrim does not have these kind of problems when it's released! I'd hope their game is stable and does not cause [censored] crashes all the time (or force our modders to find solutions they could not find in time).

It was probably caused by a corrupt spawn, which in its turn can be caused by many things, which makes it notoriously hard to track down. I'm using FCOM and it happened twice during my last 350 hour game, both times in connection to Oblivion planes. In short, an annoying but thankfully quite rare issue, which is "fixed" by waiting for a respawn.

My luck dictates that all my save games will have the same problem - all of them are from inside the gate. I rotate ~6-7 saves, but I never think to stagger then event-wise. I've been just saving them in case of corruption...so I'll just save over the oldest file. As such, there's no going to an older save.


Seems you have learned the hard way that it's crucial to have lots of saves so you can roll back if something happens. I'd recommend Streamline's Streamsave feature (as you're already using Streamline), which makes saves automatically based on the settings you give it. Combine this with hard saves. Personally, I'm a compulsive saver so I save after each stage done in a quest line, after leveling up, at the beginning of every dungeon etc.

Some notes on your load order:

36 FCOM_Convergence.esp [Version 0.9.9] - You're using the correct UFCOM esm but the "old" esp. Update to UFCOM.

3B Mart's Monster Mod - Gems & Gem Dust.esp [Version 3.7b3p3] - Don't use with OOO/FCOM.

Glad to hear the reset worked. For AVUncapper, have you tried http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35675? I use this with AV Uncapper, and everything has always just worked. I use the esp from JCN instead of the example esp included in the stock AV uncapper.

So: Use the .dlls, etc. from stock AV Uncapper, and the JCN esp and ini file. Make sure to edit the JCNAVUncap.ini to whatever settings you like first.

The FCOM_Convergence.esp was updated. I used TheNiceOne's omod installer - wonder if there's a problem there?
A different problem arose when removing gem&gem dust...even after BOSSing and rebuilding patch, the bashed patch still calls for the mod as a master, and causes pre-game crash without the mod activated. BOSS didn't ask for it to be removed...but I don't know where to go from here to fix this 'problem'. I havn't seen any errors related to this, yet, but I don't grind gem dust frequently. Any suggestions?

Replace the MMM Diverse Runeskulls Loot G&GD.esp with MMM Diverse Runeskulls Loot.esp, this plugin could cause the Master dependacy issue when you tried eliminating the Gems & Gem Dust.I also noticed an MMM Runeskull Rebalance Beta in your Load Order - this esp could also cause an issue, because it might be only for MMM and not an FCOM build, I do not have it and I would check the readme that came with the esp to see if it is necessary for your install.
Use one FCOM Gaurd Unity Plugin.
2C is unneccessary when using the Supplemental Patches by Arthmoor.

You actually want to use "Mart's Monster Mod - Diverse Runeskulls Loot OOO.esp" with FCOM.

Understood. I'll remove it from the directory. Thanks - your mathematical model of diminishing returns (1-e^x.....right?) made all the sense in the world to me! Best uncapper yet (and Elys did a great job!)
