Staffs and Magic...If a staff is two handed...

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 11:10 am

Reading the Game Informer update I noticed they said that you have to equip a magic spell to one hand, then I thought "Aren't Staffs two-Handed?"

How's it gonna work? Will you have to only use the spell the staff is given?

Channel it through a crystal on the top, making magic more powerful?

in the screenshot with a guy holding the green topped staff, he is also holding a sword.
Gandalf can do it, why can't we?

I've been curious about this - I'm afraid we may have the RPG staves of Oblivion back. The other option would be to be able to cast an equipped spell through your staff, amplifying it or adding additional effects.

Perhaps they will do one handed and two handed staves ([censored] you dictionary, staves is a word), the difference being lesser and greater abilities. Lesser abilities might be a low level paralyze (although, of course, it could be used for some nasty work), and a higher level ability might be a strong lightning spell.

Sounds about right?

Well, currently, there isn't any reason that we couldn't have both magical staves (unfit for close combat due to their magical nature) and regular melee staves, although I somehow doubt that.

Hopefully we get cast-on-use back for enchantment, but if they keep staves like they were in Oblivion, I'm not so sure...

I like this idea

If you have the GI mag, it seems that staves are now one-handed.

There's a screenshot in GI of a guy holding a staff and a sword, and in http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/5466/bear610ed.jpg concept art as well.

It looks like magic staffs are one-handed.

Nice find. One-handed staffs were probably too obvious to think about them. But given how that thing glows, I find my channelling theory quite likely.

Well, they haven't really explained anything about the dual wielding mechanics... I hope we'll get to know something substantial soon!

Damn it, StoneFrog, stop making so much sense.

I'm pretty sure that's illegal around these parts.

The new gi combat article says staffs are two handed I believe.

It says nothing of the sort. It might imply that with this sentence:
Your warrior can equip swords, shields, maces, axes, or two-handed weapons.

But that wouldn't be the first time since Skyrim was announced that the implication was not the truth, especially since, if we can not attack with staves (in melee), classifying a staff as any kind of weapon doesn't really make sense.

Also, daggers are not mentioned in this sentence. Credibility.... not so high.

Does that mean dual-wielding staves?

imo, staffs should be regular, low-damaging, melee weapons.

The low damage comes with the added bonus of being able to cast spells while they're equipped.

Ha, nice! Either channeling the magic through your wonderous stick, and i mean your staff :D or hold it with one hand and shoot with the other. Woops, simple!
you could even alternate hands holding it to shoot the 2 spells of each hand.

That way it works.

This. In the Skyrim issue of GI there is a screenshot of a guy holding a staff in one hand and a sword in the other. We may have both two handed and one handed staves, but who knows

What does this mean..."In the early stages of development, Bethesda watched fighting videos to study how people react during melee battles"? Was beth watching videos of melee combat from oblivion or from play testers in skyrim?
