Staggering: Will it be toned down?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:11 pm

Do you remember when you tried your dang hardest to try and fight a REALLY tough boss in oblivion, only to be knocked around like a punching bag?

What I mean is, when you got hit, you staggered, and you were unable to attack.

I REALLY hope this is toned down in Skyrim, your a battle-hardened warrior for god's sake! you shouldn't be knocked around!

Anyone else agree?

By the way I'm not saying that it should be removed, I'm saying it shouldn't happen every single hit shield blocked or not.

Good information that people have put in:

This. I like the staggering, but it should be regulated somehow. It makes sense to be staggered when fighting a huge dragon, but fighting something smaller and/or weaker than you shouldn't warrant so much staggering.

Yeah I remember, it was very realistic and I hope they keep it, even make you stagger more. Won′t make sense to be able to take a blow head on from a dragon without staggering.

So what you're saying is a battle-hardened warrior who's trained himself in the coldest of climate will be knocked around like a punching bag unable to attack.

...huh...

...makes no sense.

Keep the staggering in.
We are not super heroes, and it makes it more challenging.

Anybody can be knocked around depending on the opponent. Doesn't matter how battle-hardened the warrior is.

Battle hardened warriors are subject to the laws of physics just like everyone else.

And who ever said you would be battle hardened? You're an prisoner, most likely sent to death, in a frozen wasteland where only the strongest survive. Somehow, somwhere, your character staggered to get into this situation.

If you read the combat article, you'd notice that combat is getting even more realistic this time around.

...so, that probably means more staggering for those who don't know how to be "battle-hardened".

Definitely keep it in. But I'll give that to the op, it's true it's true in some fights it got annoying : what I mean is that I count on that "sprint" ability to maybe have a more responsive way to dodge.

With the information from GI it seems like it will happen a good bit more often, fights in Skyrim are going to have to be more thought out through trial and error of the new system.

The new changes sound fantastic and staggering in battle will make things more realistic and interesting. I have to say I disagree with the OP on this subject.

I actually hope there are different kinds of staggers, as well as knockdowns and such...I imagine you're gonna fall down a few times if you're being attacked by an angry dragon or a mammoth.

Learn to fight.

This. The first step of a battle is estimating how tough an opponent is. If he looks like he could tear you in half and eat you for breakfast you probably shouldn't engage. From there you need to move when you fight, from strafing around your enemy to rushing in for an attack and backing off. Fake an attack from the right and really go in with a move from the left. Also, you need to time your blocks. If you never block you deserve to die and if you always block you will be less mobile and easy to move past and knock down from a different direction.

I kind of understand the OP. I mean laws of physics are nice, but I don't think they're really being followed when your 100 STR Nord is pushed around by a Wood Elf bandit. I'd hope they tied it to the opposing strengths somehow. This way Dragons would probably be even more fearshome, while enemies weaker than you don't act like they're as strong. Don't care much either way though.

Staggering is actually going to play a more prominent role now. One thing Bethesda is trying to do is really evoke a feeling of real life combat and brutality. With that kind of style comes a lot of staggering (opponents are bashing swords against each other, of course someone will stagger) and a lot of energy. While Oblivion was diverse in the types of attacks one could do, it really didn't engage the player into the combat. One didn't feel like they were making an impact, and it came down to knocking down health bars. With staggering/shield bashing being more prominent, it will keep players on their toes, make them more engaged, and will leave for an overall more fulfilling and challenging experience.

I'll pass...

I believe getting knocked around by a hard boss is very acceptible.

I think they should keep staggering from received hits, but remove the stagger when you hit someone who is blocking. It made the combat really boring when NPC's would just keep blocking everything.

Sorry to disappoint you but it looks like the combat system in Skyrim is all about getting staggered when someone blocks your shot.
I guess it will force people to fight realistically. Like in 95% of the online videos the player just runs up to enemies and spams the attacks instead of blocking a shot then countering which will be the main focus in Skyrim along with shield bashing.

^^This.

Sounds like it will happen more often, but the upside to the new combat system is that it should generally take less blows to deal death. No more enemies with endless HP pools that we just whack away at mindlessly.

Yes it is freaking annoying to be staggered, but it just added to the realism. And since Bethesda has promised that Skyrim will be oven more realistic than Oblivion, I guess we should prepare ourselves for the return of staggering. And even added things such as broken bones and crippled body parts.

I'm hoping that the staggering combined with not being able to run backwards will result in me having to fight a little more strategically - much more fun I think.
