I don't quite understand how people compare it to Fallout. Aside from featuring guns (in a very general sense, because they function completely differently), mutants (in a very general sense because they behave very differently) and a post-apocalyptic environment (in a very general sense, because the moods and circumstances are completely different), they're nothing alike.
Stalker's an FPS with practically no RPG elements. You can get new equipment, but you don't raise any skills or gain levels or anything. Also don't expect a game where you go and scavange in ruins for supplies.
There are some rpg elements, and they are more profound at Call of Pripyat.
You can't customise your character's appereance, but there are some rpg elements, and these are that you will find at Call of Pripyat:
1.Large Oblivion-like areas that you can free roam and go wherever you like, full of caves and secrets to find as you explore.
2.You get quests by talking to npcs and not by some Head Quarters guys you only see at cut scenes.
3.Non linear gameplay.Yes there are some missions of the main story, but you can just forget them and spend your time doing side quests, exploring,or finding and selling stuff to become rich.
4.Trade.There are shops where you can buy and sell stuff.
5.There is a hidden leveling system.
The first time you explore the world you have to be cautous with what you fight and what not.If you are not leveled up you will be dieing again and again every time you try to complete a mission not for your current state.
The game doesn't show you a screen with big letters telling you things like "YOU ARE NOW LEVEL ##",but a leveling mechanism is there. As you fight enemies you get money which count as expirience points. Then as you progress in the game you unlock tiers of upgrades for your armor and weapons. You can choose what upgrades to make, and thus leveling up your character in an indirect way.You can choose to make your armor sustain more hits which is equal as raising your Health Points, you can upgrade your gun's accuracy which is like raising your accuracy skill,or you can choose the weight reduction upgrades, which is like giving points to an invisible "strentgh" attribute.
And you can't get all the upgrades for all the things you have,so basically you are free to customise your gear thus creating a player with unique powers and weaknesses.
At the beggining of the game you will die like a fly,and after you complete many missions and get many upgrades you will be almost invincible.
The core of a leveling system is there.
6.You can sleep on a bed anytime you want, and eat food and drugs that have effects on your character.
7.You have an inventory screen and you can loot corpses.
8.You have weight restrictions, and if you grab many things you get over-encumbred!!!
9.You have your own chest to store the gear you don't want in your backpack.
10.Different endings depending on your in-game actions and choices.
Now if you ask me,I'm a fan of the series.
I just like their unique feeling.
Stalker games manage to mix up fps, rpg, survival and horror elements in a unique way which is something fresh.
So they get a thumb up for me.
