STALKER Discussion

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:45 pm

This thread is for the discussion of the STALKER game series. Currently this includes Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Pripyat. STALKER 2 is in the works and should come out for the PC and the consoles in 2012.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcNylGYq-v4 for the upcoming http://www.moddb.com/mods/call-of-pripyat-complete mod. I'm not sure if my PC will be able to handle it though. :P

I'm currently playing http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009 and it's very good!

I've been wondering about these games for a few months now. I've never really done any serious research. It seems sorta like a Fallout game in Russia. Am I way off base or...?

im still interested in this Stalker going multiplatform that was discussed awhile back. Looking at Metro 2033, i would love for that engine to be in a console port for stalker. i absolutely loved that game.

I haven't played Fallout 3 or New Vegas to compare, but STALKER is generally less RPG and more survival. There are no skills and levels, so better equipment (which is temporary, except for artifacts) is your only way of becoming more "powerful", and things like hunger, ammo, and weight capacity are all concerns.

I don't quite understand how people compare it to Fallout. Aside from featuring guns (in a very general sense, because they function completely differently), mutants (in a very general sense because they behave very differently) and a post-apocalyptic environment (in a very general sense, because the moods and circumstances are completely different), they're nothing alike.
Stalker's an FPS with practically no RPG elements. You can get new equipment, but you don't raise any skills or gain levels or anything. Also don't expect a game where you go and scavange in ruins for supplies.

So many zombie games out there, but STALKER was the first that let me jump onto a boulder, surrounded by mutants, drunk and with vodka in one hand and a shotgun in the other, say something witty and start shooting.

Well, literally all I knew about the series is that it features guns and mutants in a post-apocalyptic setting. Sounds like it's a lot of fun and looking at some screenshots makes my graphic junkie side joygasm.

its not really based on a post apocalyptic setting but it is based off the chernobyl disaster.

All in all, the game is a lot of fun and it can be VERY hard when your just starting and new to the series like i am.

Just wondering cause I never got a clear image of this; is STALKER a linear FPS or is it more open to exploration and free-play?

its exploration but there are different sections that make up the zone so while there is a point A and point B in areas, the areas themselves are huge and have many different things. some of the "quests" have some linear elements but its relatively open. watch some gameplay footage.

I thought they were going to port one or more of the older STALKER's to the 360 before they released STALKER 2?

Would be silly not to. They got the license now so it would be a smart move to release one of their older games to work up a fanbase and get people interested in a sequel.

I'd actually be cautious of buying a sequel to a game that wasn't released on my platform as stupid as that may sound. That may have been a (small) contributing factor (out of many) as to why Team Fortress 2 wasn't a success on consoles. I'm thinking Crysis 2 might fall into that same trap, but that might be just because it's a bland and uninteresting game.

Same here. My computer would never be able to run the games. I feel like I'm missing out. From what I've seen, the series has the potential to be one of my favorites. Especially after having played Metro 2033 and loving it. Having that kind of atmosphere in an open world rpg is awesome.
Stalker 2 is supposedly going multiplatform, but with many of the original team over at 4A, I don't know what the new game will end up like with a new developer at the helm.

Wasn't aiming at you specificly, a lot of people compare them. Apparently anything with a post-apocalyptic vibe is 'like Fallout' :P

Considering most of them left before Shadow of Chernobyl even shipped I wouldn't expect it to be a problem. There's been two Stalker games in the meantime, after all ;)

I feel like I'm the only person that wasn't crazy about Metro 2033.

It seems like they were going for a post-apocalyptic stealth-type game where you were encouraged to sneak around enemies rather then fight them head on, but they [censored] up the stealth-mechanics so much that it was damn near impossible to get through an area without alerting someone. Wasn't crazy about the graphics either. I mean, it's pretty easy to make your game look good if it takes place in dark tunnels more then half the time.

Plus I hated that damn shotgun. The only gun that was worth a damn and it took forever to reload.

"...and the Nintendo Wii" < Lol?

Also, eww, destructoid. So glad I don't go there anymore. Bunch of dumbasses over there.

"If STALKER does ever come to consoles, I can't imagine how neutered it would be. Not on a technical level really, though yes it would be cut in that way, but mostly in a gameplay way. There is no way the game would sell on 360 being as hardcoe and complex as it is on PC."

^ Case in point.

Anyone know of a mod for Call of Pripyat that reduces the number of birds that fly over your head?

God I love the STALKER games. The atmosphere in them is fantastic, and the heart of what makes them so brilliant.

As an aside, has anyone watched the movie by Tarkovsky upon which these games were based? It's neat to see the inspiration for games, as well as being a good movie in itself.

Really wish I could play these games.

All I got is a tiny netbook that can just barely play Morrowind.

to be honest i prefer STALKER over the fallout games. new vegas was a huge improvement over fallout 3 in that it had deathclaws and cazzadores and some nice locals like that vault overrun with plants. but nothing matches the environments that were in STALKER SoC. CoP is the most polished of the games and it has the largest maps but you have to use mods to fill it up a bit. currently im playing SGM 1.7 which adds deleted content and places boss level beast in the world like pseudogiants and burers.

im very excited for STALKER 2 but i hope they dont simplify it for consoles. one of the reasons i enjoyed it cause it was challenging compared to most games out there today.

@darthravanger if you use atmosfear 2.1 all the birds are killed after a blowout.
