I've always been a great fan of standup comedy, be it LP's or on video, and I was wondering who some of your favorite/least favorite standup comedians are?
I'd say my favorites would have to be, in more or less an order (although any order of favourites isn't static for me):
Number 1: Richard Pryor: His social commentary stuff was great, but even if you take that aspect out of it he's a very funny man, and his 'heart attack' bit is hilarious. A shame his movies were mostly not that great, but his live videos are all pretty solid, except for maybe live and smokin' which I think is more of historical interest than paticularly funny.
Number 2: George Carlin: This man needs no introduction, easily one of the best. Although I don't find his later stuff very funny (he went from being humour with a bit of message to message with a bit of humour) his observational comedy is great, and his more 'preach'y stuff is great even though I don't find it funny.
Number 3: Redd Foxx: Although he's probably primarily known for Sanford and Son, he was a very funny (and dirty) comedian. Although a lot of his references are obscured by age (like his jokes about Sammy Davis Jr's eye, that sort of topical humour goes obsolete fairly quickly) most of his body of work hold up pretty well.
Number 4: Bernie Mac: Rightfully remembered as one of the all time greats.
Number 5: Bill Cosby: Being a clean comic is worthy of respect, and it's not just a gimmick, Cosby's 60's standup was funny stuff
Other greats are Steve Martin, and it's tragic that none of his standup stuff has been rereleased on DVD, as I can't find it anywhere, Patrice O'Neil, Bill Hicks (who kind of falls into the same boat as later Carlin in that his stuff is interesting, but doesn't really make me laugh) and Tim Minchin, who is one of the very few people who does funny and clever musical comedy.
Andrew Dice Clay easily tops my least favorite comedians list, which is pretty short as I don't really go out of my way to listen to comedy I don't like, but he really stands out. I'm pretty sure he was doing a Kaufman style thing where the joke is that he's an unfunny ass of a guy, but either way I don't think the people at his concerts treated it that way.
