Star Wars Light Saber

Oh and people the tech was here years ago, think about laser surgery.

Yeah, but a handheld version of it wasn't available to the public for this cheap. Anyone, be it a normal person, or a criminal, can purchase and own one of these things.

No, i just used the famous quote from Einstein thingy , something along the lines of :

What do you think ww3 will be fought with?

Einstein: i don't know , but i know world war 4 will be fought with sticks and stones.

I was joking btw

oh........now i get it. actually a pretty good one just went over my head. :)

i hope nintendo gets a hold of this and makes a new lightsaber or phaser wii remote. maybe even kinect or sonys move could use it?

The same can be said of a knife, zippo lighter or a normal handgun, the difference is those can't be stopped by a sheet of aluminium foil.

Please, the best protection are jedi robes. You don't even need protective eye wear if you wear jedi robes, they even protect you from cancer . (laser radiation caused )

There's a reason why jedi wear those robes you know.

That doesn't make sense to me, can you explain it better?

That comparison would work...if the first two had the same range of a laser. A knife, assuming most people can't throw one properly, has an effective range about as long as one's arm. A zippo lighter can go a bit further when you spray something combustible into it like a crude flamethrower, but that still only goes about a metre or so. And a handgun can't legally be purchased by a minor, and even an advlt has to have registration and a license in most regions. This laser can be purchased by anyone with a credit card.

Tell me, what do you propose, to solve this problem that you have evidently invented?

Yes, they can be, but name one practical application for the sale of this device that doesn't end with the phrase "... just to burn stuff."

And it's not so much the users hurting themselves that worries me, but those they might inadvertently harm around them. Industrial usage tends to be heavily controlled, with many safety precautions in place, whereas this thing is being sold like a novelty penlight... Doesn't that strike you as a little irresponsible?

Read my earlier post, I admitted it doesn't have any practical uses for the common man.

A license for ownership, similar to one for firearms.

George Lucas will sue whoever the people were that made this thing look like a light saber so hard their mothers are going to owe him money for giving birth to them.

And if you want one, you'd better get it quickly. If these things are real, and really work as advertised, they are going to be either outlawed, only allowed to be used by law enforcement and militaries, or the company will be bankrupted by all the lawsuits this thing is going to generate.

edit - another thing that I hate about this is all the animals that will be tortured with it. I can just imagine some little future serial killer getting one of those for christmas and then heading to the local animal shelter to "adopt" some strays.

Guys, so you know, these maniacs have made lasers before. In the previous iterations, it still took several seconds to cut through electrical tape. Continuous exposure would do... about... the damage a cigarette burn would. I'm not sure how much these bastards have ramped it up, but you'd have to keep the beam focused for several seconds to do any lasting damage.... TO ANYWHERE BUT THE DAMN EYES.

Because of a 'standard' laser, I now need glasses. Guys, do not EVER ask yourselves what looking straight at a laser beam is like. Staring at the sun feels good in comparison.

But I mean, even if it took several seconds (which I doubt it would take with this laser), it would STILL do some damage.

Can you imagine using this thing for self protection.

The horror on the face of the guy that breaks into your house as you emerge from your room, cape and all, wielding a lightsaber. Golden moment.

That can happen regardless of the weapon used. Could be a hand gun, rifle, knife, bow or in this case -- a laser.

light sabers are NOT lasers!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have a very finite field of influence. The most likely candidate for a light saber is some type of plasma-blade contained in a magnetic field.

Oh, and yeah, sounds like it could be dangerous

Someone needs to make a video of a laser like that burning through something with the Imperial March playing in the background. Or it would be a weak laser burning through a piece of paper, I don't care.

But yeah, intsa-cancer laser sounds pretty bad.
