Star Wars Light Saber

Post » Tue Dec 29, 2009 1:30 pm

light sabers are NOT lasers!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have a very finite field of influence. The most likely candidate for a light saber is some type of plasma-blade contained in a magnetic field.

Oh, and yeah, sounds like it could be dangerous

Yeah I saw a Discovery Channel let's build a light saber special, well I didn't actually, I fell asleep it was so boring. But the conclusion was it'll take a long time yet before the tech is up to the theory.

Doesn't matter. Here in the 'States, anyway. Lasers over a certain wattage are illegal, and cops are VERY aggressive in nabbing people fiddling with lasers in an irresponsible fashion.

You dont even need a functional light saber to get rid of a burglar or mugger. If I was a burglar and a man in a jedi outfit stormed at me with a light saber I'd drop my [censored] and leave.

These things will replace current 40mm grenade launchers in near future.

my thoughts exactly

this is proof that we're incredibly close to creating these

Uhh its... sort of like what if it drops and its on and goes spiraling out of control creating a death light show as its beam goes spinning around until it stops. Yea, not something you should have unless you have it for a purpose, are trained in it, and are not a [censored] dumb ass. Hence the training, and of course regulated. For all intents and purposes it may as well be a military grade weapon.

Edit
It is a laser, and not a contained thing. That means it just goes on unless they found a way to limit that, but then it could easily be modified to re extend the range to several miles. And if your really good you might be able to take away the visible light. You would have an instant death sniping weapon that no one would ever see and would be untraceable. Now put this in the hands of your average idiot.

...

oooooookaaaaayyyyy

yeah they better crack down on this before I die of "Natural Causes"

seriously though, that's pretty scary, seriously people should be a lot more afraid of this than they are

If someone is dumb enough to buy that thing they deserve to get mutilated by it. It probably wont be that simple they will most likely hurt other people before themselves.
I like Stars Wars but not enough to be an idiot.

I'm surprised at the negative feedback towards this thing on these forums! Besides from being freakin' kicka$$, I don't really see any practical application.

Edit: Ah, I read on the website that the actual 500w model is upwards of $2000

Guys, so you know, these maniacs have made lasers before. In the previous iterations, it still took several seconds to cut through electrical tape. Continuous exposure would do... about... the damage a cigarette burn would. I'm not sure how much these bastards have ramped it up, but you'd have to keep the beam focused for several seconds to do any lasting damage.... TO ANYWHERE BUT THE DAMN EYES.

Because of a 'standard' laser, I now need glasses. Guys, do not EVER ask yourselves what looking straight at a laser beam is like. Staring at the sun feels good in comparison.

The eyes are my biggest concern for this. Weve had about 80 attacks on law enforcement officers here lately with green lasers (eyes targeted). Not a single one has gotten permanent injuries so far, but its still a threat. I dont think I need to point out what would happen if you combined a teen whos not considering consequences, a much stronger laser and a heavy traffic road.

If the injuries it can cause were limited to the user only, then I wouldnt care at all. I miss natural selection sometimes. But as you might have figured out, the users wellbeing is not the greatest concern when speaking about this.

my thoughts exactly

Always... :P The DL-44 Han Solo's using is based on the Mauser C96, just like the E11 Blaster Rifle is based on the Sten gun and some heavier stormtrooper blasters on the MG-42. Although theres still a big difference between the blasters in Star Wars and this laser, since blasters fire projectiles instead of a laser beam.

Reason for edit: I always seem to miss a typo or two before posting, even though I double check....

By the way, before any Aussies consider buying one of these, unless you fancy getting a $110,000 fine from customs, you need to get a permit from the police as well as permission from customs.

Since always.

All of the Star Wars blasters were real world weapons redressed.

They are illegal here in Sweden too, and soon they will be illegal in all of EU too if I'm not mistaken.

A license for ownership, similar to one for firearms.

They are already illegal in many countries, exactly what more do you want the legislators to do about it?

[censored]. I want me my lasers.

I suppose its to be expected though, I mean, blinding laser weapons do contravene the Geneva Conventions.

STill, this tread has been an eye opener, I didn't realise dangerous lasers were at this degre of public availability yet.

What a bunch of idiots who are trying to sell that on the internet.
This is more dangerous than a bomb. Just aim it from afar at someone/something and they will die. Yeah. People should sell that.
Oh wait, those are called guns.

Well, you see, arson, physical abuse and attempted murder are already pretty much covered by the legal system. Why make a point out of telling someone not to do something that they most likely had a rather good idea of the illegality of?

It's not like there's a blind spot (pun intended) in the legal system, which allows people to murder and burn down whole continents without reprisals because doing so specifically with a LASER is exempt from all legislation.

That's hardly the point, I know these things are illegal, but people still do it. Not everybody cares about laws. Making it easier for people to break them seems pretty stupid to me.

Actually, that is the best point made so far on this thread.

There are literally thousands of objects we buy and use every day that are just as dangerous as this laser pointer and we don't make special rules for buying them. This one is futuristic and therefore kind of scary, which is why there is an uproar about it. If everyone took the time to fully understand the product, they would realize that it actually poses less of a threat than having a fireplace or swimming in the ocean.

The version of the product that has all of the "dire" effects costs $3,000 (US)... hardly the kind of money that the ignorant masses of irresponsible SW fans can shell out for a bad knock-off. That price tag already limits the potential customer pool for the "dangerous" model severely, in fact, almost exclusively to wealthy collectors who are not in the habit of actually using anything that they purchase.

Dangerous lasers are unfortunately quite public.

Me thinks very dangerous in any hands, laser arms? How can one shake hands with laser arms? These are best left for the atronachs.

Permanently?

Some rental scarring no doubt, not sure the magnitude.
