http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKl_sTh0oHE&fmt=18 - a high-frequency sound that can only be heard (mostly) by those under 25, used to disperse lingering youth crowds (predominantly in the UK) through sheer discomfort of the constant ringing/buzzing sound.

Thing would constitute frigging assault, if it actually worked.

There's two types, actually. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4857417, as you mentioned, and also something known as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKl_sTh0oHE&fmt=18 - a high-frequency sound that can only be heard (mostly) by those under 25, used to disperse lingering youth crowds (predominantly in the UK) through sheer discomfort of the constant ringing/buzzing sound.

God that sound is annoying....

It does work. They had one on a lamp post near an estate beside my old high school. Extremely annoying.

My physics teacher -- a mild mannered softly spoken Irish man, never used to shout at the class. He'd just use some sound thing and set the frequency to a point where he cant hear but we could, until we shut up and listened to him.

Wow, for $160? I think Yoda would have a heart attack right now.

Heck, I'd buy it if it was LESS powerful than it currently is. For that price....

Just for [censored] and giggles I looked it up. It's actually $200 USD, but it does come with safety goggles.

Only Jedi should be allowed to use them since they have superior discipline.

Good thing that I got that degree from the Jedi Academy's Online branch recently....

I'm considering converting a room in my house into a Jedi Altar, for worship of the Jedi way. That way my house classes as a religious building, and I am exempt from paying council tax...

Hehehe

Just kidding  .

How is this even being allowed? If it can burn people to that point..the authorities aren't stopping it?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the news article was posted with that title and key words simply because they know how much traffic could be generated by the millions of star wars geeks who Google "Real life light saber" every day, In hopes of finding the holy grail of nerdom, so they can follow their dreams of being a chubby Jedi kid.

Perfect for fighting zombies, I must get one of these.

Considering most depictions of zombies have them being unable to feel pain, I don't see how something that just burns would be terribly useful against them.

Anyway, beyond blinding people and/or causing them bodily harm, I don't really see why anyone would want one. I mean, is it powerful enough to cut through stuff, or something?

Well, we are allowed fireworks and firearms which effectively do the same thing...

Added to which, they aren't actually illegal, so the authorities can't just confiscate them on a whim.

This can lead to nothing but trouble. I'm wondering why they haven't contacted the PLA yet.

One upping the US Army, with our own lasers.

True, there is the whole cancer problem, but that could be fixed.

I don't like this. You could cause serious harm to others, and they would never know who did it. Being permanently blinded because people in some apartment building a few blocks away decided to aim the laser at people down on the street doesn't seem like an appealing proposition. Especially with the trend of groups of youth. Just imagine a group of kids driving around, just firing the laser at pedestrians and driving off.

What's with all the outrage?

I don't see how this is more dangerous then lets say firecrackers.

One of my friends blew his hand a while ago with a firecracker, when i was a kid, that stuff got in my eye.

Tough i was fine and never used fireworks/crackers again.

Are you seriously asking what the difference between a firecracker and a laser beam with 1000 times the power of direct sunlight is?

Another thing to consider is how easy it would be to track the laser.

Victim gives description of weapon, witnesses confirm victims testimony. Police narrow search down to a "laser", a small amount of research into various publicly available lasers would lead the police to this or similar products -- they could then narrow the search down again by seeing who bought the product from the website in a certain radius of the initial laser attack. This would give a list of possible suspects (I doubt it would be saturated at any rate).

Well it makes sense to me

The only problem is, without a description of the perpetrators appearance or what he/she was driving, it would be hard to gather evidence. The lack of finger print evidence found on bullets that can be linked to a certain weapon through ballistics would be enough, but laser beams don't have finger prints. Having your finger prints on the actual laser (handle?) wouldn't be enough either -- since the person might simply be an owner of a laser and without adequate evidence that he/she was in the area at the time of the attack, or a sworn testimony that they where seen by a witness, or CCTV/Photo evidence they where there -- It just isn't enough for a conviction.

Correct me as you wish. I imagine I'm wrong on a lot of counts but it makes sense to me :P

Either way I cant wait to see the crazy list of bi-laws and regulations that are bound to be released in regards to this product.

A few years back when there were not regulated you had street kids putting them in people's hoods(coat hoods) or pockets without them noticing.

I'd say firecrackers have a pretty high damage potential.

Where I live, we used to see people ripping drain pipes off buildings, putting fire works in and using them as make shift RPG's. Let's just say my friends and I avoided the area in November and December.
