There's the worrying part, most of the people interested are either A)Not in their right mind or B)too stupid to live.

Individuals should be banned from owning one of those.

Why? If a person dies from it, that is their own fault. And if a person kills another with it, that's murder. But it still requires an idiot to do that.

I'll arm my golem with one.

Uhh its... sort of like what if it drops and its on and goes spiraling out of control creating a death light show as its beam goes spinning around until it stops. Yea, not something you should have unless you have it for a purpose, are trained in it, and are not a [censored] dumb ass. Hence the training, and of course regulated. For all intents and purposes it may as well be a military grade weapon.

Edit
It is a laser, and not a contained thing. That means it just goes on unless they found a way to limit that, but then it could easily be modified to re extend the range to several miles. And if your really good you might be able to take away the visible light. You would have an instant death sniping weapon that no one would ever see and would be untraceable. Now put this in the hands of your average idiot.

Now just make it bigger, order to melt armor off from tanks

Then we need to invent Myomers and Gyroscope/Neurohelmet. And we have Battlemechs

These things will replace current 40mm grenade launchers in near future.

I can think of at least one person this should never be in the hands of, a UFO hokerr that shines lasers on planes and post videos on the youtubes.

Well, now we have our hoverboards, holograms, cloaking devices, flying cars AND our lightsabers. Its like there was this huge breakthrough in future technology in the last five years.

What's with all the outrage?

I don't see how this is more dangerous then lets say firecrackers.

One of my friends blew his hand a while ago with a firecracker, when i was a kid, that stuff got in my eye.

Tough i was fine and never used fireworks/crackers again.

That's why there are rules about how much gunpowder and all that is allowed in firecrackers.
And it's illegal to buy fireworks from other countries and bring it here, because they aren't as 'safe' as Dutch legal fireworks.

With this laser however, you could wreak havoc.

Want! :D

The only bad part is the cancer. And blinding people instantly. And the chance of the laser activating in your pocket and burning a hole in your pants. :P

Read about this in the news paper yesterday morning. I have to say that how easy it is to obtain is cause for concern -- It's effectively a lethal weapon with no restrictions on ownership. Just imagine what would happen when the street gangs of england figure out its just as easy, if not easier, to obtain one of these instead of an illegal fire arm.

Still pretty awesome though -- I don't doubt that it will be incorporated into the military at some point, or at least something of a similar effect will.

The trouble is that the only people who would be interested in such a thing probably don't have the capacity to use it intelligently.

YOu know, I could have sworn I heard about some crowd control weapon that fired (microwaves?) at you, making you want to jump out of the firing range due to severe discomfort.

There's two types, actually. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4857417, as you mentioned, and also something known as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKl_sTh0oHE&fmt=18 - a high-frequency sound that can only be heard (mostly) by those under 25, used to disperse lingering youth crowds (predominantly in the UK) through sheer discomfort of the constant ringing/buzzing sound.
