Starcraft Discussion

Post » Sun Apr 04, 2010 1:48 pm

Well I never played much of Starcraft, since I wasn't a fan of RTSs when I was younger. I got into the SC2 beta and have been loving it so far. (Although I lose a lot :P)

So I was just seeing if anyone had any tips for a Protoss player? I've been watching some videos online, but I still haven't been doing well.

Also you can use this thread for discussing Starcraft.

So I was just seeing if anyone had any tips for a Protoss player? I've been watching some videos online, but I still haven't been doing well.

One of my favorite strategies was the 2 gate goon. Forgo even making lots, and just rush for 2 gates and pylon. You should have 4-6 goons out in under a few minutes. They're very powerful against Terran who rush vultures and are great in general against zerg (although you WILL need some lots to soak up the zerglings and especially the cracklings).

Another very awesome build is the 2 gate dark templar rush. It takes a few minutes, which is why the forge is actually the first building you should drop after your pylon, which you drop in the choke, and then you put a photon cannon down at the choke too. When you get your first 2 temps, you can actually place them in the ramp spaced properly on hold and no one can get past them. An enemy will try clicking up there, they will go up, then half of them will explode. Use them to keep people out of your base while you attack with 4 dark templars. The game should be over quickly if you take out their mineral line and defenses.

The 2 gate dt rush is awesome because you have lots of tech options to work with. I've actually won with my original DT group in a Terran vs Protoss (me) game using good use of speedlots and max ranged goons. I then used my dropships to drop in my dts while my opponent was occupied, then ordered them to kill all the detectors and comsat stations. By the time he realized what was up and got tanks and goliaths up there, all of the detectors where dead and all of his mineral line. He GG'd and surrendered.

First one was epic. Brood war really balanced it though. Terrans FTW!!

I forgot to mention the insane usefulness of High Templars. Do NOT underestimate the power of 4 psystorm dropped all at once. That game I mentioned I won with my 4 Dark Templars? I couldn't have done it without 4 High Templars running in and totally demolishing the horde of goliaths and siege tanks with their psystorms. It pretty much demolished his whole expo.

Oh, and you may find http://strategywiki.org/wiki/StarCraft/Protoss_strategies useful.

Pstorm got nerfed big time in SC2. DT's will totally mess up someones stuff without detectors. And I think Archons splash damage got nerfed too.

I only played up to the second mission of the first one. I haven't played it much and don't plan on playing it much in the future :/.

I've found out that mass producing void rays really helps out in the long run.

Its actually incredible. Most new players will stick with ground units. Most players will GG when a single void ray starts harassing their drones. Gateway rush zealots and tech to void rays. Flank from the back, and if you wanna be really fancy, get a phase prism and warp some guys in to help get the job done faster.

Hah, well I was playing 2v2 me, protoss, the other guy as terran and I constructed at least 20-25 void rays. We put up a good defense so I had a ton of time.
I researched for better shields and more air support power. Then our counter-attack began.
Casualties: Around 5 void rays, lol.

Right now I find high templars and archons to be totally useless.

Haven't yet played SC2, but my friends and I tended to prefer hours-long battles over who could rush the fastest in StarCraft.

I think my personal crowning achievement in StarCraft was fighting a Siege Tank war against one friend for 4-5 hours and eventually whittling down his tanks until my units trundled into his base and blew it to kingdom come. Or maybe the time I stopped an armada of 63 Wraiths with nothing but missile turrets (though I was a real newb back then). :P

The average Starcraft 2 game lasts no longer than 9-15 minutes. (1v1)

That is just sad.

Granted my friends and I had rules set up in StarCraft matches to avoid attacking for 20-30 minutes... :P

Randomness: You should post your specs. I wanna compare. I'm desperately awaiting any information about specs. I'm gonna seriously implode if my system ain't gonna be able to run it....

The collectors edition does look good.... a USB stick with Starcraft and Broodwar huh?

Hundred bucks is a lot, though, don't know if I can justify spending that much hard earned money on one game.

Im a Zerg player myself :) I got the beta about a week ago and have been playing nonstop. I win half the time and lose half the time. There are some really good players out there.

I tried installing it on my netbook and it wouldn't run on low settings...well it did run, but it ran like crap. The wierdest part is I can get Oblivion to run on this thing with low settings and a few mods like Streamline. I guess is just the engine they used..

the specs on my netbook are:

1.3ghz x2
3gb ram
intel integrated graphics

When installed it on my netbook I was given a warning that the game won't run properly because my processer wasn't good enough..

The specs on my pc;
3.4ghz dual core
6gb of ram
radeon hd 4850

It runs on ultra settings at max resolution on a 42" HD TV. No lag.

Yeah, the forces that tend to cause someone to say gg is like 6 hyrdalisks or 4 reapers. Its all about micro and macro managing your stuff. If you can't do it, you'll go nowhere online. And i'm basically going nowhere online. :(

I never have been into ANY RTS games online for that reason. I love RTS games, but just hate playing them as intended. I like campaigns, and custom games.

Luckily it looks like SC2 is going to have one hell of a single player. I mean it's so big they have to split it up into three games. :P

Yeah, i've been watching some the latest starcraft 2 campaign videos. Im glad to see that units from the original game that didnt make it into the multiplayer will be returning in the campaign.

So far, ive seen: Scouts, vultures. Goliaths and firebats.

The only down side is that we'll be playing as Terran throughout the game. Also, to combat against this issue, they'll be releasing a mini protoss campaign to give you a taste of the game.

They're also doing some training missions to help you learn to micro manage and stuff...In the beta multiplayer you cannot train against computers because the hardest AI level you can go against is very easy. You can wait 15-20 and the computer will rush you with like 2 marines...its hardly a match against anyone..

Whenever I zoom in on anything (roll mouse wheel), my framerate drops from 80 - 120 to ~30 :(

Anyone knows why?

Playing on 1920x1080x32, everything on Ultra, Shaders on Extreme.

It might have to do with the zoom level. Not all the shadows are enabled from certain distances. I found this out in the galaxy editor.

What are you computer specs?
