Starfire NPC additions

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:25 pm

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but given the amount of time that has elapsed since Starfire's last response in this thread, has anybody tried to contact him/her to see if they're still at work on the mod?

I presume if Starfire's very busy, there will be several people who have made plenty of suggestions that are willing to pick up the slack.

Not as of yet, I don't think - may be worth a go, though

This looks amazing, I'm downloading now.
I think we should wait a while longer as September wasn't that long ago. But I agree with trying to contact Starfire

A look at his profile page suggest they last logged in on the 6th, and last reply on any topic was the 5th, and that was on the MGE thread concerning some technical difficulties he is having with MW...so using these clues, it is safe to assume, he is not working on it atm but rather trying to get his game up and running so that he can work on it and be able to test it out himself as he goes along...

but that's just my idea...

Since it has been a while since Starfire did any posting here, how about one of the enthusiastic souls who urged so many changes on the mod come forward bravely to take its future development on their shoulders?

sent him an email asking about his inactivity and if needed, any permissions we might need if we were to continue in his work...reply will be posted when/if it comes. Unless he beats me to it....

Good. I've not made any requests before for this mod, out of the several dozen it has received, but will offer one now to whomever takes it over:

Make multiple small, incremental milestone releases. Part of Starfire's problem, I think, was that everybody wanted everything from him/her, good and bad suggestions piled on, and Starfire was kind and willing to oblige. As requests bloated by the dozens, the chance of a release to did it all dwindled to nothing. Prioritizing with one or two changes decided upon by the modder alone, without help from anybody else, makes it much easier to get something done and out the door, and at a leisurely pace.

That's my say. Good luck to anyone who actually does this.

I use NPCs Additions instead of the old and overvalued MCA, and then this my review:

Player review:
NPC Additions its very well done, and i like it, finding this mod much much better than MCA. No more games without Additons!

BUT........

But i have some complaints to do:

1) Pilgrims that say "You can do Seven Grace Pilgrimages also if you not belong the Temple" its wrong IMHO: player must be encouraged to join the Temple and perform the Pilgrimage, not the opposite. Also make some Imperial cult missionaries around, for balance Temple followers and give a chance also to players that belong to the Imperial cult;

2) I will suggest an addition for players that dislike join Temple or Imperial cult but want Restoration or Misticism spells, held by the 2 creed and conceded only to followers (this especially if you runs Wakim, or Taddeus): put into the mod some Expelled people from the 2 creeds, that earn a living selling the spells that have gained during their times with Temple/Imp. Cult;

3) Patrols. You talk about Patrols, and I AGREE. In this way will be difficult enter in tombs if the player know that a patrol may arrest him for graverobbing, OR, instead, make appear some Patrol in these areas using spawning points, simulating a casual patrol that come there, and see the graverobber enter, then at the entrance he gain a reward for graverobbing and can be arrested while come back in city.

Anyway, you have the best NPCs mod ever seen, and i am happy to use instead of MCA.

It really helps to read at least a few posts above your own in a thread. Adventurous Pilgrim, I'm not dissing you, but if you'd done that, you would see that we don't currently have a modder. (Just the last few posts would have made that clear.) And that's in good part because of tons of requests and suggestions. Right now, we've got one person who is trying to contact Starfire and get permission to work further on the mod.

So let's hold off on suggestions for the time being, and just focus on trying to get someone who is actually willing to take up the mod. Preferably someone who was very willing to offer advice on how to develop it, before.

If you can actually mod very well yourself, that would be great..

Well, I'm still hoping Starfire makes a comeback, but if not, it would be fantastic if someone else put the finishing touches on this. It's a great little mod.

so starfire hasnt been around for a month or two. I think its a bit harsh to suddenly jump all over his/her mod without waiting first. I know its been awhile but R/L does get in the way and i think you should wait a little bit longer......

its great that their is dedication to this mod and dont let me stop you as it show just how much starfires work is appriciated.

My two cents on the matter.

Hmmm, hadn't followed this in a minute here, but I actually tried to contact Starfire a little while back (few weeks ago at this point). Did the old email through the forum option (since I couldn't find an addy around). Never did get a response, but I do agree with Midge too - might still be a bit early to think about such a thing either way. People seem to disappear for months on end around here and then suddenly pop back up.

Lol I've done that a few times but being a modder of such a small caliber no one notices. but that's a good thing.

I'm still waiting for a response back if he ever sends one. though i am disheartened to hear what you said red eye about trying to get a hold of him ealier...oh well, if he can't be reached i'll check his readme and see what it says there but midge is right I won't do anything major until it's been a bit longer.....and so should the rest of us waiting for an update...:P

Side note, pretty sure Starfire is a she, unless memory is failing me.

Either way, don't be disheartened, I did use the forum's built in send email option, I know some people use dummy emails to sign up for accounts on sites, so it may just be it was sent to a rarely checked account (granted, I wasn't able to find an email address for her offhand, thus why I used this method).

I constantly drop mods for periods of time (Burial Rites at the moment is in a lull for me) - though I do tend to keep posting, but it varies from forum to forum.

In the time being, people can sate themselves with some edits in the CS for their desires.

I thought you were the one who was checking to see what was happening was Starfire, per your last message, above. Am I wrong? Because I don't see how there would be any news updates on that front, except from you. ;)

At this point, if all options are exhausted for contacting Starfire, it's up to whomever has the skills and interests to take the mod over, slim down development to essentials and bug fixes, and walk the thing along. As before: we had so many people willing to offer suggestions for development, logically one of you would have the desire as well to actually do something in turn. (And before it's asked: no, I never made any requests of Starfire. Figured she had enough on her plate. Nor do I have the level of skill required for this mod.)

So who will step up and work on something they so enjoyed?

I look forward to testing this mod in my new build. I have used MCA for some time, and remain impressed at the level of work put into it, but agree that it has definite flaws. Personally, I've never been killed by a footpad, but I have had my share of CTDs caused by the drunks at Arrille's. I especially like the patrol concept, and hope that gets fleshed out completely. I'll miss my MCA courtesans, but heck, it's not that hard to add a topless female here and there, right? Even a clueless modder-newbie like me can do that.

Rochndil, who won't really miss the FPS hit either...

I'd give starfire till the end of spring break in the US (assuming she's from the US). Its possible that she just hasn't had the time to get on the internet (school and work?). I'd like to say I wouldn't consider her MIA till a full year has passed since her post.

I mean, no one gets this antsy about the MCA author being gone for 7 to 8 months at a time. ;)

It's so very true, and a number of the things people have mentioned could be done for themselves in the time being anyways, if people feel it is that crucial. Personally, I am happy with the mod as is to be honest.

If a modder is here every day and gets bombarded with suggestions for expanding features, then suddenly vanishes for months--just as happened in this thread, as the record shows--it's a good bet they've been burnt out by the demands both of players and real life. And the reason for assuming this is that it's happened repeatedly over the years, following exactly the same pattern.

We can only hope that it's temporary and Starfire eventually, quietly resumes work on a scaled back version of the mod, without reference to online comments. Might happen; might not.
