Town was under attack. Grabbed the nearest sword to fight back. Suddenly a guard rushing to help fight off the attackers ran over to me. Time stopped as he screams that I violated the law and would have to pay the court a fine or serve my sentance. A couple of options and some odd pointer thing appeared in my vision and I clicked a button. Next thing I know I'm standing in some random cell.

Or maybe I knocked something off of a table, picked it back up, and the nearest guard hauled me off to jail for theft.

Seriously, though, my character was assaulted by a group of six particularly well-dressed bandits and killed them. The guard just saw the bodies.

Because the prisoner backstory is one step above "he just came into existence" and still leaves a lot of RP ability.

My mage in OB was in the prison because a fellow apprentice framed him for stealing their master's grimoire.

We were picked up as part of a greater Imperial scheme to weed out members of Mankar Cameron's cult, we were part of a 'sleeper cell' in Skyrim and transfered to a tower to await expedition to Cyrodill. The Empire went Tango-Uniform and not knowing what to do with known terrorists, they chose to do what any rational Nord would do, put them (including you) to death.

My Dunmer was caught with his Argonian and Khajiit slaves while migrating to Skyrim.

My Bosmer was practicing his archery after a night of drinking and missed the target, hitting an affluent Altmer who made sure I was prosecuted to the full extent.

I lead a siege on the Imperial City with my army consisting of me, Jauffre, Martin, Mazoga, The Adoring Fan, a Knight of the Nine, a Dark Brotherhood Assassin, and my Mage Apprentice. I also wore the Gray Fox Hood to get the beggars on my side too. We were going pretty well until we ran into Hieronymus Lex, because he could never die. After that I had to flee to the Arcane University, where all the mages joined me to kill the Battlemages. By the way, its possible on a console, you should try it some time!
