You move faster without armor which is nice if you are dodging arrows. There is a perk in the Alteration magic tree that makes your protection spells stronger if you are not wearing any armor at all. If you dual cast stoneflesh or oakflesh, the effect lasts twice as long. I use light armor and lots of magic.

If an item has any armor value on it then don't use it if you want a pure mage taking advantage of the alteration mage armor perk. Also as this is your first mage I would recommend relying upon conjuration as it is pretty powerful and destruction is really not a viable sole damage type.

Use conjuration and sneak. Mages are squishy and the first thing with a big club will squash you if it sees you. Hide around a corner and summon something (repeatedly) until whatever is there is mostly dead then jump out and soultrap it and finish it off. If there is a room with something in it and a shut door, stand near to it, prepare a conjuration, open the door, release your spell, then shut the door again. If you stand to one side so it doesn't see you you can stay hidden. Bows work well for mages also. Without armor you don't want to get close to things with big weapons.

When wearing only clothes your active effects will say 100 (with ebonyflesh), but if you were to type "player.getav damageresist" you should see 300
