Starting Dungeon

Post » Thu May 12, 2011 6:45 am

Who cares about it?

Just make a save at the sewer gate(oblivion) and load it whenever you want a new character

Only that doesnt really work on xbox, because you dont have seperate folders for saves, or ways to name them.
Therefore it is very easy to accidentally delete or save over that file in a moments inattention.
And then you have to do that whole long winded aimed at dummies tutorial again.

So a Morrowind style intro is best. Short and sweet.

While nothing beats the sheer relief of finally finding the exit to the starter dungeon in Daggerfall, its simply unfun to have to do it fifty times.

I'd rather start right away with some pop ups every once in awhile acting as a tutorial.
I hate having to go through some long ass tutorial crap before the real game actually starts.
FO3, while not a dungeon, had the worst one yet.

Seing as not all people playing Skyrim will be us people here on the forums, or indeed people who have ever played TES games before, I think they should do an extensive intro. And Im pretty sure they have.

In Oblivion, I just made a save by the exit of the tutorial area so If i ever wanted to make another character, I just reloaded that save and changed everything I wanted before I headed into the "real world".

I like Morrowind start.
Short, but effective since it tells you everything you need to know.

And without possibility of trying your different skills, obligating you to configure your class without even knowing how the skills run. This is not so much problem in Skyrim, with the removement of the Skills Selection System, but a Tutorial with some action is a good thing, in my opinion... and if you are about to be executed, I would expect some trouble ahead.

Anyway, the "problem" you mention was also in computer and PS3... although I can't really see it as a real problem. You just need to be careful... and if you delete the file, I don't think that spending 1 hour in the tutorial again would be traumatic, and I suppose you wouldn't delete the file again.

I'm okay with the tutorial dungeon idea, so yeah. It's okay. Plus, we should be fair to the noobs. :P

I hope the player starts in a cell again, like Oblivion, maybe include getting frogmarched through a scenic town under armed guard to a security post where your details are taken and your then tossed out into the new world.

Doesnt matter that much, as long as it makes sense. Like following this blade guy through some escape route, could make sense if done right. Tutorials always get boring, forcing you to do things you already know how, really slow. speed through that or skip it all, and just start the game!. :brokencomputer:

I also liked the Morrowind start. It was kind of warm, yet cold =D

But since it's confirmed we'll be a prisoner in Skyrim start, here's my bet:

There'll be a dragon attack on the jail and you'll escape in the chaos. This could be two ways:
-Interesting way: You run as the city/prison collapses slowly on your head.Like Dark Messiah's first episode. You learn about the weapons as guards die, dropping them.
-Boring way: You run to the nearest sewer. The rest same as Oblivion's goblin cave of the tutorial.

I have actually deleted my file at the end of the starter dungeon in Oblivion about half a dozen times now. All accidentally.
I dont want to be forced to do a boring tutorial. I want to play the game.
Ill figure it out as I go along, and if I get stuck Ill read the manual. That is what manuals are for.
Long, book-like manuals are fun.
Long tutorials are boring.

At least give me the option to skip the tutorial.

Maybe I'm one of the few who thought the starting area in Oblivion was great but I do. It was my first opportunity to learn about creatures, weapons and how to use them, my health limits, how to increase skills, etc. I saved before exiting the sewers so I didn't have to do the tutorial again if I didn't want to. I could skip it and change everything about my character. I think it would be great if it was like that again. There could be an option to skip a tutorial but I wouldn't. :)

Mmmm... ok. I would make half a dozen saves at the sewers, then. Manuals are fun...? At least for me, which is fun is a tutorial with action and plot.

I don't want to tempt a Oblivion vs. Morrowind debate, but... personally, I hated how in Morrowind you have to choose how your character will be for the entire game without knowing how the skills work. I found Oblivion's beggining interesting; it revealed what was going on.

I would like Skyrim to have a starting dungeon. As there are no Skills selection anymore, maybe it could be shorter... but a Tutorial is a good thing, I think.

Agreed. I had to run through the introduction in Morrowind five times before i had a build i liked, and i couldn't save before exiting. It wasn't long but long enough to be annoying. Oblivion was better as that actually had you doing what you would be doing for most of the game and thus adjust your build before exiting. And having the ability to save before the last chance to change stuff.
As for Skyrim and it not having classes and thus very little start-of-game customization that wouldn't be very important. There should still be a relatively long tutorial section so that new (and maybe even old) players can adjust to the mechanics and controls. A good tutorial is vital to a game.

Actually, the save file in the Xbox for Oblivion was the name of your character. On mine, I named the file (character) `DONT DELETE` and just loaded it each time I wanted to start a new game. Since you can change your characters name again before leaving the sewer/gate, this was a great way to prevent accidental deleting. This saved me from going through the tutorial more than once. For my tutorial play through I used an Orc so I could carry more, then just left behind the stuff I didn't want if I created a new character and changed the race.

That is a fantastic idea!
Thanks for the tip :)

*goes to make a character called DONT DELETE*

Dungeon start with choices at end like OB, all the unfortunate ppl that forgot to save before exiting so could skip it next time are just a little unobservant... I prefer an intro it's much more Gamey and cinematic for the main story and simply a must for the uninformed, newbie. I've seen many a friend get bewildered by ob start if I'd forced mw on them theyd probably exsplode. Some ppl need tutorials.

I think much better is to have an epic story enterance with the option for additional play throughs to use a different start to the game than the dragon born set up.

I wouldn't mind a starting dungeon like Oblivion. After awhile I just made a save file at the end of the dungeon so I could just create a character from there and bypass the tutorial.

SAVE BEFORE GOING OUT OF THE SEWERS! THIS IS A NON ISSUE!

Personally, regardless of startng dungeon, Id like that the introduction to the game world feels more epic than Oblivion (I can imagine coming out into the mountains after escape, with that atmosphere music that was released). In Oblivion, most of the awe was due to the fact it was the first game I had ever played with graphics that looked like that, but starting in that lake right next to the Imperial city (with all cities available for fast travel right from the beginning), didnt feel that great (most of its greatness was the sheer joy that after two years of waiting for release, and an ordeal to find an open Gamestop in my city, I was finally friggin playing Oblivion).

I absolutely loved starting in Seyda Neen in Morrowind; but I think Skyrim should have you start in the wilderness, very similar to what Malavok said.

As you recovered from concussion, you find yourself out in the open just on the border of a fall forest. While being completely clueless at what sort of violence just happened in the scene where you and your fellow prisoners were supposed to be executed, you picked up the modest skinning knife laid nearby anyway, along with a bag filled with a couple of healing and magicka recharge potions, and a quiver of arrows and bow. Now, whether you decide to trail that mysterious gravelly voiced-man who suddenly arrived to the rescue and told you and a few other ex-prisoners to follow him into the woods, or go with the other ones to find a nearby settlement, it's all up to you...

TES games have history with you being a prisoner, so to start as one is a given.......but

This does not mean you will be in the standard prision as in Oblivion, in morrowind you were on a prison boat transported to Vvardenfall.

As far as I know in Skyrim (please tell me if I missed something) all we have been told is that we are due to be executed on death row .....

whats to say that in this is not out in the snowy wastlands taken there by 3 Nordic horseman to have my head severed from my shoulders (Thinking Gladiator film start here) then a dragon shriek fills the air and the next thing you see are the 3 scortched bodies of your executioners.

And Skyrim is yours to explore.

I really loved the Morrowind beginning, and it was well recieved by critics as well as fans:

Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gameplay_of_The_Elder_Scrolls_series#Character_creation_2
Morrowind begins with the player imprisoned, though in the midst of being set free. A well-received[10][18][19][20] tutorial following the release moves the player through the process of character creation.[21] The player is successively asked questions by a fellow prisoner, an officer, and a bureaucrat as the player is registered as a free citizen; choosing, in the process, the player character's name, six, race, birthsign, and class.[10] These affect the player's starting attributes, skills, and abilities. In a throwback to the Ultima series, the player has a chance to answer a series of moral questions to determine their class.[10][18][22] To accommodate the successive menus and ease the player into the game, the opening sequence uses extensive scripting, and is one of the few parts of the game to do so.[23]

now that you don't need to have a dungeon to figure out what class you want to be, which was oblivion's reason for having such a long dungeon, they just might revert back to Morrowind's tutorial style
