Whoa...slow down there. You just can't GET weapons, you have to earn them. You get a varmint rifle for the tutorial, but it is in poor condition. You may buy another varmint rifle and repair the first varmint rifle with the second. But if you want to know what a good weapon is, get to Gun Runners, right outside Freeside, and buy either a Brush Gun or AMR. But they're expensive...sooo.

Laser pistol you find in Doc house? I'd say then try and get a recharger weapon.

Definitely think the recharger pistol was one of the better early weapons, matched with a plasma defender/pistol if you manage to salvage one so you have something a bit more hard hitting in tight spaces.

IIRC the charger Rifle has a 0 EW requirement but the pistol has a 50 EW requirement? strange.....

The Recharger Rifle is weaker than the pistol.
If you tag EWs, then Doc Mitchell will give you a Laser Pistol along with a 9mm. Pick up the Laser Pistol in Doc Mitchell's House and repair the higher condition one with the lower CND one.

How is the recharger pistol a 'beginner weapon'. You clearly are not meant to go straight to Vegas, there's deathclaws and cazadores. And even if you can get there, it also costs a lot of caps.

There are some quaranteed energy weapons obtainable very soon after starting:

Spoiler

Goodsprings Cave, on a dead Bright Follower.
Yangtse Memorial, the grave marked with a cross.
Under the railway bridge just south of Sloan, on a dead Bright Follower.
Incinerator on the convict leader in Bison Steve's Hotel in Primm.
Two Laser Rifles in Nipton.
A dead Bright Follower in Coyote Den, follow the railway north from Nipton.

Most of those are random, if you're lucky you'll get a Recharger Rifle which means infinite ammo.

The recharger rifle is a good starting EW weapon Chet has one for sale in Goodsprings. It is cheap. The cave nearby may have one in it (it varies), but the Follower's corpse will have an EW weapon. There is another Follower corpse on the way to Sloan. It is under the overpass. Those and the laser pistol in the Doc's house will get you started. And yes, if you tag Energy Weapons as a skill, Doc Mitchell is supposed to give you a laser pistol.

Most of the time in my games he has a plasma pistol

BTW, buy all the bulk ammo you can find, they are good for killing trash mobs (which is majority of the game's enemies) while causing less damage to your weapon.

Laser Rifle, (with enough luck) Laser RCW and Tri-beam Laser.

Incinerator is also very good weapon and you can get rather early..

You can actually start with the Varmint rifle. I believe it requires zero guns skill to be used.

You always get a laser pistol at Doc Mitchell's house. If you tagged energy skills from the start, you get another one that'll allow you to repair it to better condition. You can usually buy some kind of energy weapon at Chet's, usually a laser or plasma pistol, sometimes a recharger rifle.

(I generally tag Explosives at the start. The logic is as follows: a lot of early weapons-9mm pistol, .357 revolver, Varmint rifle, Laser and Plasma pistols, Recharger Rifle- require zero skill to be used to full effect. Meanwhile, selling that dozen of Dynamite sticks yields a big enough cash boost to purchase one of the aforementioned weapons from Chet and have some caps left for ammo.)

You can find a level-dependent energy weapon at Goodsprings cave.

You can find more energy weapons in Nipton, and you can get your hands on a LOT of Plasma Defenders at the REPCONN Test Site. From that moment on, you have all the firepower you need until you reach the Silver Rush.
