Starting New (first time)

Post » Sun Nov 22, 2009 9:28 pm

Hi All.

Iv been playing Morrowind for quite a while now. and now i want to try Oblivion. Basicaly the point of this post is for a little bit of advice.
What i would be intrested in is:

afew mods: possibly some weather mods (thunder and lightning etc . . ) I for one love questing, not sure on how many quests in Oblivion (vanilla) but id love to have Alot! more quests. Maybe a nice set of armor / wep. and also to have a nice big house generaly near a city.

So thats afew of the mods i would like, im not sure if there are even mods that can do these things. secondly playstyle . .
so what i would like my Character to be: Basicaly I want to be an All-Round Melee fighter possibly a one-handed wep and shield, in morrowind the way i was playing was i had a rule, Free Man. take anything you can make use of. so by this i mean if there is some odd clothing ly'ng around, take it and sell. food keep it to make potions. Im also going to try and fit in most professions (alchemy , enchanting). Last thing. im a collector of random rubbish, so i would like to have a big house, i dont mind taking it by force but i dont want to kill anyone i later need in a quest (if there is no mod to get one). so anyideas on class, major / minor skills . . ?

Any Help would be apericiated. Thankx.
Moose.

You can't kill quest people, they are just gonna wake up again... so you are safe.
There are houses for sale in each city... killing an NPC won't make his house yours so you won't be able to sleep there and make it your own by killing someone... sadly.

For weather you could use Natural Environments or All Natural or any other mod you find suitable. I'd sugges you search a mod site like http://www.tesnexus.com for mods.

EDIT: The house in Skingrad is the largest buyable house in the game, but it's quite expensive. I'd recommend the house in Anvil, it's the best when comparing prices with the house size.

EDIT2: Do you have any of the official DLCs?

You'll probably want to read the UESPWiki page http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion_for_Morrowind_players. You might also want to read the general UESPWiki page http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:First_Time_Players.

http://www.tesnexus.com/ is probably the most popular mod site. However, there are some others such as http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/ and http://www.elricm.com/index.htm. Some modders may use one site over others and thus here are excellent mods that are not necessarily on the most popular site(s). You can search the sites for things that interest you. For myself, some of my favorite mods are not necessarily the most popular, but they are better (for me and my preferences) than others that are more popular. What matters is what appeals to you, of course, so you have to experiment and choose.

Definitely get Wrye Bash if you are going to mod, though. You can find the RelZ thread on the mod forums here.

First, welcome to Cyrodiil, and http://www.uesp.net/w/images/images.new/c/c4/Fishystick.jpg  They're specially made from the local slaughterfish, and won't have bits of dreugh in them like some of the Vvardenfell sticks

Along with the DLC, and houses that can be purchased (no more killing residents to steal homes) or found, there are lots of mods that add homes to the game. Some are free, and some require a payment or quest or something to get them. You can also use the Construction Set to make one for yourself -- first thing I did was add another shack to the Imperial City Waterfront, since some of my characters must have had a home before getting thrown in jail.

For the other stuff, oh yes, there are mods :D Oblivion does have a large variety of quests, but you can add more from the DLC and from mods. Did you get regular Oblivion, or was it the Game of the Year version? GotY includes Shivering Isles, which is the only expansion and will have LOTS of its own quests (it's akin to Tribunal, except that it has nothing to do with what happens in Cyrodiil), and Knights of the Nine, which is a very popular DLC quest.

Definitely look through the Mods forum to see what else is available. There should also be some "must have" threads.

Main thing to know is, Oblivion will be familiar in many ways, but it's still a very different game from Morrowind. The MQ will be thrust upon you, so if you're not ready to do it yet, you'll have to ignore it on your own, there's no "I don't wanna" dialogue options, unfortunately. It can be a good idea to ignore it your first time playing (at least for a while), and just explore the game and get used to everything. And just like in MW, play for a while before adding mods too, so you'll know what you want to change, and how much :)

Downloadable content. You can read about it http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Official_Plug-ins, and there's a sticky about it if you'd like to order any. At first, you'll probably just want to look at Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine, the rest are designed to be much smaller, and for certain kinds of characters.

I recommend getting the GOTY, it adds some awesome quests and the KOTN adds one of the best armour sets ever. :sb:

I recently posted a list of my "must-have" mods in a thread in the Mods forum that may be worth taking a look at: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1112748-what-mods-are-worthwhile/

Well, as everybody are missing the basics, I'll point them out...

- http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5296 (+ http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27710)

No matter what you install next, those ones are completely essential.

And, to organize mods and invalidate ArchiveInvalidation.txt (for any new textures to work), use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2097. Also (and to finish), a lot of excellent mods need http://obse.silverlock.org/ to work, so it wouldn't harm if you install it now, and launch Oblivion with the obse_launcher from on now...it won't harm the game in any way, either if you use OBSE mods or not.

What was said above, Skingrad is the largest house in the game, but is a whopping 25,000 septims. (dollars). So use your freeman skillz to scavange acouple thousand overhaul outfits and you'll be fine ;D I got x-box so i know a diddley-whoop about mods, but for exspansion packs (like shivering isles) there is a castle one...don't really remember :s but after the story you get your own castle, beats paying 25,000 $.
