Stat levels at the start?

Post » Sat Aug 28, 2010 10:53 pm

Since there are no longer classes, will all skills start at 25 then raise based on your race bonuses?

I think that would make the character too strong at the beginning. Maybe they could have your stats all start at 10 then raise based on your race, but 25 would probably too much. Sorry if this has been mentioned, but I was wondering what you all might think?

They will probably start at 1 if they aren't affected by racial traits. Seems like the most logical way to me

But when you didn't have a class in Oblivion at the beginning, stats were in multiples of 5.

Well they start below 25, as far as we know...

My guess is either 5 or 1.

Yeah, but its going to be based on the old system. Do you really think they would trash everything?

...so why did you assume that they'd all start at 25, rather than 5 (which was the level of a skill in OB that wasn't Major/Minor/Racial?)

Yes, it would be really broken to have all the skills start at 25. Which is why I seriously doubt (99.9999999%) that they will. In fact, I'm pretty sure that they'll start at a level that's balanced for how Beth wants the beginning of the game to be. (After all, the absolute beginning is the part they have the most control over - they know the starting stats, they know the racial bonuses, they know what the first quest you start on is and what monsters will be there, and there hasn't been any chance for the player to go off and do other things yet.)

I would say they will start at level 5. It just doesn't make sense to change it.

Well I admit my first post was pretty stupid considering the picture of the menu shows one of the skills at level 15

Well that doesn't exactly discount your idea as there are damage skill spells as well as the fact that they could have given him custom skill levels for the GI demo. :P

Look at the far left the Dunmer there was a mage style character, however their speechcraft was set at 15 for a level 9 build.

My guess and that they said skill rising early on would be easier, is that base starting skills are 15.

Or this particular dunmer could have spent a little time on the wrong side of a jail cell door... thats always a possibility.

That being said... my guess is they start at five or 10, imo any less than five isn't enough, and would possibly discourage the use of skills, and more than 10 is too big of a head start to me, making characters possibly level too quickly at the start. And yes, I'm aware people will level fast to begin, I just think having skills start over 10 would make it too fast, depending on how little experience is needed at lower levels.( again, I know exp doesn't exist... its a term I am using to paraphrase.)

Honestly, I'd be shocked if Bethesda could answer this question themselves.

I mean, I'm 100% certain that Todd Howard could tell you, if he wanted to, what it starts at RIGHT NOW. I just doubt he'd be willing to claim he knows what it will eventually be. But I'd seriously suspect that they have on-going debates about the exact specifics... and have a program that regenerates the level-up tables for any given default skill value to keep THAT working as intended.

My guess is all skills start at five that are not affected by racial bonuses.

25? Too high. Hopefully they start at 1 or 5.

Whatever they start at, hopefully they are comparable to the average village NPC's stats.

I think it should all start at 15 and that it could be 10 or 20 depending on race and then perhaps bonuses of +5 to certain attributes with birth-signs.

Basically what I am thinking is that a child in TES should have 5 in every skill, a teenager or a young advlt should have 10 in every stat and your average Joe grown up should have 15 in every stat, and then there would be a difference like Orcs would perhaps have 20 Strength and 10 Intelligence while an Altmer advlt would have 20 Intelligence and 10 Strength. Going by this a Orcish child would be equally strong as an advlt Altmer, and a child Altmer would have the brains of an advlt Orc. Perhaps a bit extreme but I like there to be extremes, nothing wrong with a Orcish child being able to wrestle down an advlt Altmer if the Altmer is just an average Altmerish scholar and the Orcish child has been brought up having daily mock fights with his peers.

I′d like to start out as an average Joe for my race, and that I would increase my skills further as I level up. In Oblivion it kinda felt like you already were superior to your average graqes harvester at level 1.
