To stat 10 or not to stat 10?

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 2:11 am

I am wondering if I should be trying to stat to 10. I am thinking of putting either Strength or Intelligence to 10 and then when ever I find the bobble head it will go to 11.

Reason thinking, going to stat 10 for strength is to carry as much as possible. I HATE being over encumbered because I just collect EVERYTHING. :P I just can't put anything down. As for Intelligence I am thinking of putting it to 10 so I can get the max experience points if I am correct and can level up faster and start putting those points into S.P.E.C.I.A.L. that I have kept low.

Just looking for something different when before I played a balanced character, thought I would the min/maxing for once, but just want to make sure that I am correct in my thinking because I am trying to avoid spoilers, so not reading much on sites and strategy guide to avoid spoilers.

So first off, am I correct it's ok to make a stat to 10, and the bobble head to 11? I know one of the stats I can make to 9, then a certain book will make it to 10 then bobble head to 11.

Strength I can make 5 or 6, but really want to make sure if taking Intelligence to 9 the certain book to 10 then bobble head to 11 would be a good way to level for maximum experience points. I am sure this will really gimp my game, but make it more challenging as well.

Like to read your opinions.

Well, I usually am of thinking that statting to 9 is as high as you need to go..... an extra one point will only make you one tenth better. Best to put that point into something that is a low number.

But having said that...... I have the lowest Luck possible of 1... since I want to win on my merits of being good at play, not with having Luck!

I do have a very Char, too low to be a Leader, and it will take a lot of points to make it possible, but I can get by without being a Leader... the other points going into what I consider more useful abilities.

Strength no, it's average, anyway an extra point would only give me another 10 pounds carry weight! Useless in my view.

Are you going to use power armor? If so, don't worry about starting strength at a high level. Equipping any model of power armor raises your strength to 11, therefore your carry weight. You can also get mods for the legs and get an additional 100 cw (50 cw per leg). I would recommend getting intellect to at least 9 for nuclear physicist perk. Helps power core usage with armor and gatling laser, and faster leveling.

IMO, it's a waste of perk points to buff it so high if you're not going heavy into melee. There's only a 50 cw difference between a Strength 6 and 11 characters. Carry weight gets buffed easily by armor mods ( both power armor and standard armor), perks ( strong back and lone wanderer), and temporarily by chems and food.

I am a vacuum of the wasteland and the strong back perk maxed out is all you need. Add in deep pockets, and a companion with deep pockets and you can carry anything.

SPECIAL points are mostly only relevant to what perks you want, except strength if going melee non-PA, since it is the only SPECIAL that influences a damage type. Sure SPECIAL affects other things as well, so it all comes down to playstyle. However, if not melee, I really think strength 4 is max I would go with any non-melee build (to open up for armorer, and even that can wait for later in the game)

On the same note, perks aside, int I don't care for xp wise either. I'll get there eventually, and it isn't that big of a difference for me. Same goes for savant. They are wasted points imo. Quick leveling just mean the game gets boring that much faster.....

If you have put 10 in a SPECIAL stat and you get a bobblehead you get permanent 11? Meaning if you haven't 10'ed the stat till you get the bobble you miss the opportunity to perma-11 it???

Actually no. Only if you spent your "SPECIAL" book point somewhere else besides strength.

So, you can have 11 perma? (I mean without the solar/night perks for S+E and P+I, chems/alcohol or apparel)

Yeah, one way is to start with 10 strength and get 1 extra from bobble head. The other is start with 9, use the SPECIAL book to get 10, then get bobblehead for 11.

Endurance, strength if going melee, intelligence if powerleveling, others are playstyle choices

End increases the health amount you have, and get through leveling, so getting an extra point early enough will make you nigh indestructible in the long term,

strength adds melee damage out of power armor, so if going melee it is a good choice

Intelligence levels you faster, but unless you are going int of 9 or more the idiot savant perk in luck gives average more exp than 1 extra luck level.

Not sure what you are talking about.....

If you don't have 10 in a given stat before picking up the bobblehead for the stat, you can't get 11. So if you start out with 5 perception, and take the perception bobblehead, you get 6, and then can never get 11 in perception, then new max is 10 since you can't raise beyond that with perk point. If you have 10 natural (no boosters) perception the moment you take the bobblehead you will get 11. And SPECIAL book can't (to my knowledge) raise your stat above 10, only bobbleheads.

Start stat at 9, use book to increase to 10, then get bobblehead to have 11.

And this is any different from what he was saying in what way? Doesn't matter how you get 10, just that you get it before taking the bobblehead. Think we are talking past each other here a bit :)

I believe you can get the book to raise a stat above 10, if you don't pick up the book until all of your stats are 10 or more, allowing you to in theory get to 12 in one special, if you don't mind being level 40 or more before picking up the book and not having any perks outside special until then.

I have a Pe=10 Ag=10 character, and I'm sure I couldn't use the book on either of those two.

Edit: Oh, never mind. Didn't see the "pick up after all 10" part.

Just exploit all your stats to 10 out the gate. Then every bobblehead becomes a sweet twist o' the dial to 11.

Yes, I raised my CHR to 10, then picked up the bobblehead that I had found but deliberately not picked up for this reason to raise it to 11. With Agatha's dress, a hat and glasses I can get a CHR of 16 before chems. As others have said, you MUST raise your stat to 10 BEFORE you pick up the Bobblehead, otherwise you will never exceed 10.

Shhh... Don't tell me that. Now I am going to have to do my Charisma to 12 now. :P

I am on the Xbox One. How can you do that with consoles, without having the console to do so. :P

That must be a wishing theory then :P SPECIAL book can't raise your stat above 10, as it is just a free perk point for stats.

level 10 charisma is good if you do settlement stuff and want intimidation, level 10 strength is great if you like to use power armor and stomp on enemies while using jetpack and explosive vented legs, level 10 intelligence is kind of an eh as I'm not a big fan of Nerd Rage. Level 10 luck is the best though, getting all three stars of ricochet is great.

If you plan on using power-armour, isn't 10 str a waste? I mean, the frame alone raise your strength to 11.

Edit: Ahhh, you mean 10 str in order to get the Pain Train perk, silly me :D

There's a trick you can use with Dogmeat to make more copies of the You're Special book.

I can confirm it works on the PS4 atleast.

I hate being over encumbered too and like you I collect everything too.

Whilst wearing my power armor the maximum weight that I can carry is 475. There is a perk that lets you use AP to sprint whilst over encumbered and another perk that lets you fast travel whilst over encumbered. You have to be at least level 30 though for the fast travel whilst over encumbered perk.

I chose the two Scrapper perks which I wish I had unlocked earlier. Basically when you scrap weapons and armour you get copper, circuitry etc. The other perks I want to get are Aquaboy that lets you get no radiation whilst swimming and the fortune finder perk at level 40 where people you kill can explode in caps? At least that's what I think it said if I remember correctly!
