Static Depth of Field?

Post » Mon Aug 06, 2012 3:30 am

I need a mod like http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/8771/ for Oblivion. Honestly, I can't stand the bad-looking LOD in this game anymore. I already have a dynamic Depth of Field from ENB but that's not the same.

Is there anything like this? Or other suggestions to make the LOD look better (apart from INI tweaks and the shadow LOD mod)?

Thanks in advance.

I know what you mean. The game can look so amazing, but the LOD can be painful to look at.

From looking at the user-posted screenshots from the mod, that looks like a simple blur set to a pretty far off distance. Honestly, you could do the same thing in a variety of ways with ENB, but it would require getting into the enbeffectprepass.fx file and messing with the DoF settings. There are a lot of different DoFs available, but most people prefer a variation on Matso's code for ENB.

The simplest--but not as configurable way--is to use http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/12525. It's great, it adds a spell that allows you to toggle DoF and choose various settings. But if you want DoF to activate only at very far distances, it might not work for you.

Another (super configurable) option is to use an enbeffectprepass.fx from a different ENB config:

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/20570/ ENB used to have an optional download that had a wealth of DoF settings to choose from (Anamorphic Flare, Smooth, Bokeh, Full Bokeh, Shiny, and every combination thereof). Nexus is still acting up, and I couldn't check to see if the zip file is still available. There are some instructions and descriptive labels, but no screenshots, unfortunately.

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/20781 has a separate DoF options download with Normal DOF, Simple Bokeh DOF, and Dynamic Bokeh options.

And the http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/20747 (not by the original author, HD6) has an IMO, nice and subtle DoF, that should be close to what you're looking for.

Here's the catch: If you go the enbeffectprepass.fx route, you should try out the various configs until you find a DoF you like. But some of the other settings in the file may change the look of your ENB config. So you may have to cut out the section of the file related to DoF, and paste that into the config you use, if you want ONLY the DoF changes. But you may not need to do that, it's just more of a heads up.

Also, the various ENBs have variables that you can tweak to control the DoF. But they vary greatly depending on whether they're using Matso's code or somebody elses, and even what version of Matso's is used. If you go this route, and need help, let me know and I could point out some of the variables to try tweaking.
