To Steal, or not to Steal

Post » Sun Oct 18, 2009 8:32 am

Ok, so as those of you who read this forum likely already know, my current character in Morrowind is a Thief. Now, naturally, that opens up a lot of possibility for acquiring loot, both because of how you roleplay a thief, and just actual gameplay mechanics(I can pick a 100 lock with ease). So, I recently discovered the Redoran/Hlaalu/Telvanni Vaults in Vivec, and oh, my, god. All that gorgeous loot in plain sight, and it would be so easy to steal it. However, I'm having a bit of a dilemma here. Do I HAVE to steal that loot? I mean, it's just sitting there, screaming "Take me", but it's gonna take forever hauling all that loot out of there, and then either sell it, or store it in Caius Cosaides house until I get my own(either through Hlaalu questline or in Solthsiem). So, as a Thief, am I obligated to steal everything of value thats not bolted to the floor, or am I allowed to just leave it sit there? I realize this is more of a role-playing question, but I imagine most of the people who still regularly play morrowind all mostly roleplay with their characters, and thus should all be well qualified to give an opinion on this subject ^^

I am a morrowind novice, but maybe it depends on what kind of character he/she is. It occured to me that stealing that stuff may be beneath the character, tooo obvious. But I guess it's up to them. If they really need the money. I mean, would a high profile thief steal that stuff? prob not. Would a rogue smuggler thief who is self-serving? probably.

I thint that you shouldn't steal very valuable items. You don't want to be detected, I am right? So, steal minor items which disappearance won't be noticed. ;)

Whenever I'm in House Hlaalu I figure it's open season on anything Redoran or Telvanni.

The only Morrowind mod I recommend is multimark and boy does it shine here. Throw Marks in your house and next to the Creeper/mudcrab merchant to handle hauling it out. Perhaps one inside the vaults for repeat trips. For free movement inside of there and the issue of overencumbrance I favor Flin.

I don't even let the not nailed down thing slow me down- I'll keep someone alive while I'm busy stealing the armor off their bodies.

Well let's say you're a criminal. You see a $100 bill laying down on the ground, next to a Rolex and a flawless diamond stone . Nobody is in the room with you. Do you pick them up?

If the answer is yes. I think your character in Morrowind might do the same to the vaults.

How about taking a trophy from each of them? Not just something that's worth a lot, but something that has significance for them. You could keep them in your hideaway and gaze at them to remind yourself just how good you are. Also, mess with their minds a bit - move stuff around and imagine their reactions when they find out!

I reckon you know your thief better than we do. Some thief characters certainly would steal everything in those vaults, but would yours? That's what you need to ask yourself. I've played thieves who steal absolutely everything, ones who thrive on challenging steals and ones who just steal the more valuable things, they're thief characters who'd steal from the vaults. As a thief you're not obligated to steal absolutely everything unless you're specifically playing a thief that steals everything. You might be playing a thief who only steals some things maybe small objects or things that aren't too hard to steal, just try to work out what your particular character would do. RPing's easier if you give your character a personality to follow and how likely he is to steal dangerous and valuable loot would depend on that.

it is a questioned of skill. those vaults are protected. it isn't like breaking into an empty home and stealing. if you get caught, you risk getting killed. or making permanent enemies. it is a challenge. do you have the skill to pull it off?

You can also think of it this way: Will a fence even buy half of this stuff from you?

The answer is no, you don't have to take it, but if you want to then do it.

It all boils down to "how much does your character think he or she can get away with?"

If you think you can pawn off most of it, then perhaps you want to load yourself up to the gills, then use a scroll of Inervention to get it to another location, where you can hide it in the short run and dispose of it piecemeal. If you don't think you can cover up the resulting sudden affluence, then perhaps limit yourself to what you can "comfortably" carry, and sell it over a period of time. Perhaps you're worried about long-term repercussions, in which case you might take a couple of items and hope that their disappearance is attibuted to theft/embezzlemnet by the House members who normally have access.

Ultimately, it's a RP-able moral and intimidation issue, although there's probably no in-game reason not to clear the place out to the bare walls.

DO YOU HAVE to STEAL the LOOT? What kind of thief are you? LMFAO. :whistling: Of course it is screaming "Take Me!"

This is what I do. I Mark myself where I am currently am, then I cast Aslamvi Intervention or the other one. Sorry I forget the names. The 2 spells that teleport you to an Imperial Shrine or Vardennfall Temple. I drop all my loot, right on the very spot where I was teleported, then I recast to where I Marked myself, and take more loot, rinse and repeat. Nobody will steal your loot if it's on the floor so it's safe dropping it.

Why do you need to ask randoms on the forum about what you should do <_<

Cant you just decide for yourself.

Its like asking your girlfriend if you would like another beer. Bloody oath you want another beer, who cares what others think. Making decisions for ourselves is what separates us from the ants. ^_^

Lol, I just wanted to get some feedback from others on how THEY play their thieves. It was still somewhat early on in my Thiefs career and I hadn't yet solidified what kind of Thief I really wanted to be. I've since gone with the "Pretty shiny things, and Uniquely named things(not necessarily artifacts)" get kept and will eventually be put on shelves and in chests once my Stronghold is done, and the rest I don't give two craps about. I'm building an entire Daedric Armor and Weapon set, then i'm selling all extra pieces.

I realize I never posted back in here, but I have read every single post probably almost as soon as they were posted and I appreciate the feedback ^^

oh, and, I hate beer >< :)

Is mysticism's governing skill intelligence? Because if it is, Having intelligence and Agiliy as govering skills and Illusion,Mysticism,Security,Sneak,Light Armor, thats such a good game for thief I got going right now....He can use chameleon to be less visible then telekenesis to grab stuff from halway across the room, then recall outside.Tell me thats not kewl.

Thats actually very very close to my build! though I use Strength and Agility as my governing attributes. But I use Alchemy and Illusion, Security, Sneak, light Armor and short blade as my primary skills(alchemy Is a minor, the rest are major). I had the same thought, that being able to cast Chameleon or Invisibility as a thief would be very very useful

While I realize that I am basically reiterating what has already been said, I feel that I need to put in my two cents.

I decide what to steal based on:
Is it light enough for me to walk out with?
Is it probably going to be missed?
How hot will it be? (I roleplay here)
How much money will it net me?
Is it obvious that this was stolen? (similar to number 3)

Mysticism's skill is Willpower, it was intelligence in Oblivion.
