Stealing in Diamond City and detection

Post » Sun Jan 31, 2016 9:31 am

I like to play a rogue character. Lots of sneaking, pick-pocketing, and stealing. Upon first arriving at Diamond City, I noticed the elevator to the mayor's offices and went up to explore and relieve him of unnecessary material possessions. I stole everything except for quest items, not once being detected. As I was leaving, a NON-hostile legendary protectron guardian shows up and starts fallowing me around. Not a good thing, as he's radioactive. Oh, and annoying.

So, I reload back before getting to diamond city, talk to Piper and the Mayor and get to my theft. This time I make sure to never steal anything with an NPC in the same room or having line of sight. Same result, radioactive buddy comes to get me.

So I reload AGAIN, this time using the console to toggle off AI detection entirely. I go and do my stealing, never while in the same room or having LoS with an NPC, and yet again the protectron shows up.

I assume the protectron isn't hostile because I haven't been "detected" stealing, but comes to get me because I stole and some game mechanic triggered to send him after me. Has anyone else had issues like this while stealing? Is there a work-around to steal without making radioactive friends? Or do I have to dispose of the protectron and/or jump forward in time? I'm looking for a way to stop this issue before it starts.

As long as you are not detected, youre ok except if you have companions with you. They may not like it and they don't even need to see you steal. Btw, be carefull to use console commands for such things. You need to train sneak..

Thanks for the reply.
-I did not have any companions when attempting this, having dismissed mine just prior to coming to Diamond City in anticipation of going on a looting spree.
-Perks are not the issue, as I have them appropriately leveled and was never detected.
-And I only used the console to verify that I wasn't being detected (by turning off AI detection) when in my previous attempts I "stole legitimately".

Have you had similar issues? If so, how did you resolve them? I can certainly reload/rest/eliminate the offending NPC, but I'm hoping to avoid this issue.
I'd rather not just chalk it up to "game is buggy".

Best way to steal from Diamond City.....just take it!

I cleared out the entire Marketplace by just grabbing everything and letting all the people and guards hit me as I do so. I killed all the guards but not any of the actual merchants or residents (people with actual names). As long as you got good damage resistance and a fair few stimpacks, just take what you want.

Diamond City is very forgiving. After killing all the guards and taking everything you want, run out of Diamond City, not forgetting to shoot more guards in the face and blow up all the turrets on your way out of the city entrance, then lose all the people that are chasing you. Stay far gone from the city for over 24 hours and when you return, everyones friendly!!!!!!

That's an interesting idea! I might use a modified version of it to work with my rogue play-style. Plus, I'm a glass cannon as I'm built to never be detected. Instead of alerting the guards and bashing everything, I might go about stealing everything sneakily, kill any generic NPCs that bug out on me, and then rest in Sanctuary for a while to reset it all.

Well, don't try those shenanigans in the Mayor's office...

Just kidding! To break into the Mayoral safe, just

walk in during office hours, and sit in a chair until it gets dark. Some swell security they have, huh?

Then open the safe. No guards cared when I did this.

I actually arrived at Diamond City in the middle of the night, so when I went into the Mayor's office Geneva was asleep, the Mayor was out getting ready for his speech, and the single guard was moving between rooms leaving me completely alone for mischief. When I reloaded after my first attempt, I didn't even steal anything in Geneva's room while she was sleeping just in case that was causing my problems. Also, I didn't pick the lock to the mayor's quarters, using

the button under Geneva's desk
