Stealing impossible - ppl always know and become hostile

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 7:34 pm

First off, hello, didn't check and search for similar threads here for which I apologize to those certain ppl out there but found similar problem at different sites (steam forum, etc.).

So long story short, no matter what I do I can't steal anything without people knowing and attacking me on sight. I can stay hidden, I steal something, yet people attack me as soon as I get near them. I make sure my companion is hidden from any line of sight too, to no avail. I use stealth boy, they know it was me. I take the item with E, take it with me to a different location, steal it, circle back and get attacked by furious settlers.

Dunno what else I could do, but this screams bug to me. People don't have to be present, they simply "know" something's missing and that it was you. I don't even get the "caught" message, they go straight hostile, sometimes it's one person, sometimes everything's fine until I get close to a person miles away from the stolen item who somehow knows. Any solution? Advice? I don't want to be waiting 3 days everytime I steal crap.

You know I actually tried for fun? B) The bucket however stays on top of the head without obscuring their vision. Like it has no space inside.

I was in some building last night fighting Raider Scum and suchlike and I decided to plant a mine beneath the body of a dead raider. Well, things wore on and no raiders got past me or forced me to run past the mine, and it was left undetonated. Anyway, just for the heck of it, I activated a protecton I found after the raiders were all dead, and watched it wander around for a bit telling me to stay out of the way.

I headed for the door a few minutes later, intending to stop and grab Dogmeat on the way. Just about the time I got to the exit I hear "BOOM" from the back room, followed by the protectron yelling "KILL!" and I got a red danger warning... So, just how did the protectron know I had planted the mine, and not the raiders, eh?

@ neildarkstar: Same when you shoot hidden with a sniper rifle at someone and didnt kill him, they just magically know it was you.

Well that's explained through people feeling where a bullet hit them. They go into caution mode, not danger, and they investigate

I wouldn't mind that much, if it didn't hinder MacCready's buddy perk development.

It is not tied to game difficulty, but I managed to succesfully steal when not wearing power armor just now. Could that be it? Always fail stealing wearing PA?

Can you perhaps confirm?

Nope, did that wearing PA and they were marked as "this character already caught you" when then trying to pickpocket as well after stealing some junk.

Good. You thieves should be dealt with though summary execution. Thieves are evil and should always be killed on sight. No excuses, no trial and no quarter.

Sorry - I hate thieves. I have never played a thief (unless required by a faction quest). Thievery is lazy and unnecessary. I mean, honestly, you're stealing from people that have nothing. That's just horrible.

Yeah, really. Funny there's a "Stealth Boy" mod you can get for it though.

Besides, who uses Power Armor.

With no perks other than Sneak 3 invested, I was able to pickpocket the jail key on my second attempt, despite the bright lighting and numerous guards walking around. So it's not impossible, but very difficult to sneak up on someone especially if they are hostile, so I'm not even going to fantasize about placing grenades in raiders pockets without a stealth boy or something. On Survival their hearing is insane, even with two muffled pieces of armor.

I lock picked the jail cell right in front of everyone lol the second it says 'hidden' I entered lockpicking and opened it. I guess lockpicking isn't done in real time as we thought haha me and the dude just walked out in front of the guards after I picked the lock in front of them

Are you confusing RL and Fallout? I have friends can't play any alignment (D&D) except LG. It is as if they can't RP anything that is not themselves. To that I say, step out of your shell. Explore the freedom that is a game, and do everything!

Oh you're talking about pickpocketing? It tells you what % chance you have to steal.

No. Thievery is bad. It is always bad. Anyone who participates in it should be executed and then their body hung on a cross like in FNV for the crows to pick at.

No thieving. Not ever. PHHHBBBBBTTTT :nono:

And in my world, maid Marian would have done as she was told and Robin would have been dead and his "merry" men either executed or sold in to slavery.

What's your point?

If you anything related to stealth wearing power armor, your chances to succeed go down the drain.

I've stolen stuff before, and the only real difficulty is their attentiveness from the guards. People even still follow you throughout their homes, so you gotta go fast.

So it seems like PA on or not, I can't steal anything in Bunker Hill. Stealing anything anywhere there with all precautions and subtlety makes no difference. Kessler, Savoldi or Old Man Stockton always attack the PC.
