Stealing, really?

Post » Mon May 19, 2014 12:04 am

Hi, Im a long time TES player, since Morrowind (masterpiece).

Im enjoying very much Skyrim, great game, but I have a doubt... why in the houses not all the objects if you take them are considered as stealing? In this game I can take, for example in a store... all the bread, some potions and also coins!!!! and the shopkeeper dont mind a bit about that because those objects are "free" only some of the objects in the houses and stores are "red".

Is this game like that or this is some kind of bug or something? how can I fix that? it totally kills the immersion for me.

Thanks!

No it's not a bug.

You can low value item own by NPC if they have enough good proposition toward you, for example if you have done a favor for them.

Given the thousands and thousands of hand placed objects, its possible they missed a few.

Also, use your imagination and pretend they are red? If you want immersion, create it.

Oh, ok, thanks :D

I suppose that there isnt a way to fix this with a mod... that should be a slave work to fix this.

I think if you the shopkeeper likes you, he or she lets you take some items that aren't worth much, like Minor Healing (13 gold) and bread (2 gold)

This only happens when you've helped them out in some way (e.g. if you go with Hadvar at the start, his uncle lets you stay at their house and "take whatever you need, within reason". Most others won't explicitly say it, but take as though they're saying "hey, feel free to help yourself to some bread and cheese if you're hungry!" or whatever, after they thank you for whatever it was they did. It's generally items below a certain value, which can include stuff like swords, I never take anything other than potions, alchemy ingredients, smithing supplies (unusual, generally only iron) and bread/cheese/soup.

Oh, except with Alvor, if I don't need the iron ingots to improve my own gear I'll grab a couple of the swords and the boots and improve them, then drop them back on the table so I get a little smithing skill increase and feel like I did a little work for Alvor to thank him for letting me stay.

People who like you don't mind if you take low-value items from them. Not the best implementation of the feature, but it's better than it was in past games where no matter how much someone liked you, if you so much as touched their stuff STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM!

You will also find that the items in Red are what the Merchant has to actually sell you. The Bread and low level potions may not even be available for sale in the barter screen (I have never checked myself). However if you clear out his inventory through barter, then you will see less items in the store on display.

One thing I really hate about TES games, (back then understandable, but now?) is when I am in a store, I should click on an object in the store and buy it. Not go and "talk" to the shop keeper to buy something. What's the point of going to a store and not be able to browse something to get. Then when you finally to "talk" to the store keeper to buy something, a) they are not in his store, or B) what you see, he is not even selling.

I really hope TES VI, when I go to a store, when I click on a weapon or potion or what ever, a screen comes up to buy it. I should only "talk" to a shop keeper when I want to sell items.

Does anyone know what the actual limit gold-wise is for being able to take things from someone with a high disposition?

Its especially hilarious when you clean out the friend's house of every low value object. I must be a terrible friend...

Not in my experience - I had one character who was trying to buy up enough fire salts to marry Balimund and had a bit of a strop when she went into Arcadia's and she had a sample of fire salts right there on the counter but wouldn't sell it. (I ended up adding one to her inventory through the console, although Khajiit did experience a moment of temptation to go back to the ways of her youth...) Far as I know the merchants' lists are random within the types of items they sell and the level you're at, where relevant (e.g. smiths only having iron at low levels/suddenly being flush with ebony and glass later on).

I am going to have to fire up the game and check on this. I could have sworn if you bought something it disappeared from the shelf. Unless the merchants have stuff in the store that they can not sell, but are considered clutter.

From what I can tell, the displayed inventory has nothing to do with what they will actually sell you

From what I've seen, it's a blend of both. You can buy some of the display merchandise, but others is just clutter not part of the shop. Likewise, most of the actual merchandise is in a hidden chest.

I have never seen a relationship between what is visible on display and what is in inventory. When I dl'd the torch arrow mod I had a need for fire salts so would always look to buy them. Many times I would see them on a shelf to steal, but the merchant had none to sell.

I love the idea of hovering your mouse over an item and having a buy/steal option show up.

Although it's true it happens when you help people, what's considered helping is often absolutely ridiculous : selling vegetables, wood or ore to their rightful owners, even though they already pay better than what you'd get from a trader.

It's the same nonsense with marriage, and they don't mind that the single leek or whatever is flagged as stolen... They'll buy it at full price and are ready to spend their whole life in the kitchen to prepare your meals.

Go to the general store in Riften (near bee and barb), watch the shelf to your right while you face the NPC at the counter and you'll see his eidar cheese disappear when you buy it

^For all I know, it has to do with the Merchant perk. With that perk, you can not only sell all items to all vendors, but you also can buy some more items from them. There are items that you can only ever buy with this perk (for example powdered mammoth tusk). Also, with the perk, the items displayed in the store are added to the stuff a merchant sells. For example, Arcadia's store looks quite empty ever since I've bought stuff from her after getting the Merchant perk... which didn't happen without the perk. (The stuff doesn't respawn in this particular case (Arcadia's store) because I enter her store way to frequently I guess).

This is true. On one playthrough, I followed Hadvar out of Helgen, sat at the table with his family, and helped the smith at his forge. When my mouse passed over his Steel and Iron Ingots, there was no "Steal" tag on them. I could freely take them. I think, but am unsure, that the same happened for Arcadia in her potion shop.

When I was doing the Thieves Guild quests, I often times had trouble getting "stolen loot" from houses/businesses that liked me. A lot of the items were not tagged "stolen", so they did not count :)

No, you're right. I've seen it happen many times, especially in Arcadia's Cauldron.

I'm at a loss here. You say it breaks immersion, but in what way? Do you always play a game where you intend to steal from people?

Not criticizing your game play, but this doesn't make sense to me. If you want immersion, then rule of thumb is you don't steal regardless if you can or not, unless the quest expects you to.

What'll blow your mind is the ruins. All that stuff is for the taking, and it's centuries old but still as ripe as the day it was made. Eat up!

How so? Do thieving bastards not get to have immersion? Is a kleptomaniac not a valid roleplaying experience?
