Stealth - But what race to pick?

′′
Hi again...

So I tried out my new Amelion-Character (Breton Farmer) but it doesn't really work because I always think on my former character (also Breton) and in comparison with him, I can't really get into my new one and I experienced its not that fun playing the same Race again.

So I thought maybe I could do something completly different. This means: Beast or Elven Race. These were possible:

Wood Elf
Dark Elf
High Elf
Orc
Argonian
Khajiit

However, I reduced it to:

Orc
Argonian
Dark Elf

Now I'm not really sure what to pick. I am already sure that I want to play a stealthy char with focus on Dark Brotherhood. Argonian and Dark Elf would therefore be quite fitting, but somehow playing a stealthy orc is very tempting. But then again, I don't know if it would be realistic and okay for RPing, because Orcs are generally big and not very sneaky.
I also play with the thought of becoming a vampire.

All in all, I guess Dark Elf and Argonian would make good choices for a decent backstory and they fit good to the Dark Brotherhood. But on the other hand, I'm really tempted of beginning as an orc, but then again I lack of ideas how to Roleplay that kind of character.

What's your opinion on that?

My character build:

Race: XX
Birthsign: The Thief / The Shadow (In case of Shadowscale)
Skills (Red for Combat, Yellow for Stealth):
1. Blade
2. Block
3. Armorer

4. Sneak
5. Security
6. Light Armor
7. Marksman

I would go with Dunmer, I beat the DB with a Dunmer myself.

Your build is decent, but I think you can go without armorer and block.

For the Orc.

He was always the runt of the litter, his older brothers great warriors while his small stature(among orcs) made him seem weak. One day while out with his older brothers he got into a scuffle with them and ended up killing them both with a dagger to the neck and temple. Now hes ended up in prison furious at the limits he has gotten in life. A very wrathful path awaits this Orc, and strange forces are wanting to embrace it.

That a good base story? Develope something like that?

I say the Argonian.

He could have fled from that brutal hell of a training camp for assassins, and now makes a living stealing things in Cyrodiil.
You'll have to forgive the short story, my brain runs on bacon, which is on ration right now.

I love khajiit personally and get their mentality more than most races, that and night eye is a good ability to have if you roleplay with dark dungeons.

An argonian I have to say is my second favourite power pick for vanilla, due to a good wide start skill range, and many permenant abilities which lowers the need for specialty magic items.

Dunmer are great for taking their roles and build in which ever direction you wis you wish to play them.
So I would say if you want a free hand, with lots of established lore already in place to help with background go for them.

On a roleplay side some really have fun with sneaky orcs, and can develope good comradery with them.

Do to the lack of customization that could not be feasible as he would be a steroid-juice head like the rest of the orc scum.

I would always pick race based only upon the look and image you want.

It sounds to me like you want to play an orc. I would encourage you to do so. Who says all orcs have to fit the stereotype? Go for it!

The Orcs make a decent stealth character , but the Dunmer imo make awsome assasins and thievs. But in reality you can turn any race into any class you want to , so what if they start out weak , just keep at training and before you know it you'll have the ultimate badass. It all just depends on what you like.

Of course, all I can tell you is what I think-- the important thing, in the end, is what you think. You're the one who's going to have to live with the character.

But for myself, I'm a big fan of off-beat characters, so my first inclination is toward the Orc. Dunmer are one of my favorite races and a Dunmer assassin is a particularly fun build, so that's my second choice. Argonian shadowscales are fun, but they're a dime a dozen and it's actually a sort of limited roleplay, since there are already shadowscale NPCs in the game and lore surrounding them and so on. I guess that can help in a way, since it provides a ready-made background, but I don't like being that limited in a roleplay.

From a practical standpoint, there's no real issue with playing a stealthy Orc. They start off a bit weak in the necessary skills and attributes, but after a few levels, you won't even notice the difference. Except maybe in third-person view.

I'm going to be the first to recommend Altmer. If you're into roleplay, it's got potential, a high elf falling into the underworld sort of thing. Betrayal, revenge, million different things you could do to explain why your dude went dark side.

The biggest reasons are practical, however. The +100 magicka gives you the magicka to comfortably use utility magic (soul trap, healing after a fight, telekinesis, frenzy, whatever) without being forced to raise int. On a stealthy, having those tricks can be a lifesaver, and it's a pain to use any kind of magic, even light stuff, with 80 magicka. The elemental weakness also adds a nice challenge, especially after playing an lolimmune breton.

Call me old-fashioned but a stealthy orc? I'm just not seeing that one. Lizard-person? Maybe. I voted for dark elf. If the cat-person option were up there, I might have voted for that one possibly instead (cats are pretty stealthy most of the time...well some of them are).

my first answer would be 'Choose a Khajiit'--they are naturally stealthy and look OK with vampirism. I voted Argonain in the poll in replacement of the Khajiit because of their lockpicking talent.

Ok, I'm still very unsure what to play as. Generally, I'd like to play that orc.

But...
When creating a character, I also look if I could imagine him as NPC. This is kind of my test whether the character is acceptable or not.

Now I imagine that I play Oblivion and the Listener, the leader of the black hand and nearest person to the Night Mother, is an Orc in a black robe. Or that one of my Sanctuary brothers is an Orc with the Shrouded Armor and that tiny little Shrouded hood around his big head. Or even that he is the Gray Fox. A green gray fox...

It just all doesn't really fit, does it? And thats my problem. But on the other hand again, I want to play something completly different.

Nevertheless, Thanks for all your replys so far. They already helped me alot.

edit: Okay, Khajiit. I never really considered playing as them. I will play around with them a bit and see whether I can get along with them.

Personally I see a sneaky Orc as only having comedy appeal, just my view. Out of Argonian or Dunmer I would say the Argonian looks cooler when sneaking with the tail, but the Dunmer might have some skills higher. I also think the Argonian looks far cooler in the black hand robes. So it's pretty much looks (subjective), or starting power. But since I'm a big Argonian fan that's who I'm voting for

Go with your heart! There is an orc member of the DB, of course, but he doesn't seem to have much use for stealth or subtlety. But maybe you're undersized for an orc and have had to resort to being sneaky and underhanded to survive among your brutal, upfront race.

That said, I voted for Argonian, partly because they start with very good speed and agility and decent strength, plus a good security boost so having that as a major would hurt you less in the early levels. Agreed that the shadowscale thing is a bit overdone, but he wouldn't have to be a shadowscale. You could come up with a different backstory.

But when I think of stealth, like some others here, my favorite is Khajiit. You can make them black, too.

If you want an Orc, go for it! You are drawn to that race for a reason. If size is a problem, go to the Construction Set Wiki and learn how to create your own custom race. (If you are on PC that is) You can keep everything same same but alter the height and weight so it is more in line with the suggestion above where he's smaller and a bit weaker. OR find the console commands to do the same thing (there's a list on the wiki somewhere for that). Being the object of bad Orc jokes and taunts his/her whole life, the PC now has something to prove. This means his/her brains are bigger and has to think. This type of role play opens a whole new area of exploration and I think it's a great idea! I say go for it *nods*

...I also play with the thought of becoming a vampire. ...

I just reread your first post. I was recommending an orc, but after reviewing this, I am REALLY recommending an orc.

An orc vampire. O M G. Do you remember this guy, who was a follower of Azura? http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:OB-npc-Afflicted_Brethren_98207.jpg

This is what he did to Buffy: http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Acadian6/Cho%20Bk%201/ScreenShot624.jpg. (Admittedly, he died from poison and she was only knocked unconscious, but still, *gulp*)

Besides, if you play some big handsome sneaky orc, you could romance the beautiful Mazoga! I'm sure it must get old for her coaxing those poor Leyawiin guards into her bed at the Lodge at swordpoint. She'd love a big strong orc to lock fangs with!

I voted Shadowscale Argonian. I think it's the most RP-able and you'll get pretty good Stealth stats too. It's a win-win.

Ok so, regardless of the poll, I'm stuck between Orc and Khajiit. After so many people recommended it, I tried it and found out Khajiit are another quite interesting race to play as too, but Im not sure whether its the right one for me.

So, Orc or Khajiit?

- I want a Stealth Char
- I want to join the Dark Brotherhood & Thieves Guild
- I don't know whether I will ever touch the main quest, but its not impossible
- I think I will become a Vampire sooner or later
- I want to use daggers and shortswords primarly, not bow even if I may use it sometimes
- I want to "Roleplay"
- More than anything I want to have a char that I can play for many hundreds of hours without getting bored.

Orc
+ Very unique char
+ Good for Roleplaying: A rather weak Orc thats not high esteemed in society, and (maybe) as well a Vampire, who finds the Dark Brotherhood and sees it as a new chance: A Family that accepts him as he is and the chance to seek revenge on all those who once laughed about him or found him disgusting.
- An Orc as stealth char seems kind of untrue and he doesnt look that good in stealthy armor or robes

Khajiit
+ Fits perfectly to stealth
+ Opportunity to do a similar RPing like the Orc one, because Khajiits are also not that accepted in society (but: Khajiit Vampires dont look as good as Orc Vampires, do they? At least they dont really look as if they really were Vampires, even if they have red eyes )
- Its not that unique, many people play a Khajiit stealth char

I again considered playing as a Breton, but I did this so many times now and I think its time for something new.

In the end, I will decide for myself, but I would really like to hear your opinions again. What do you like more, what do you think has more potential for a long-term-game, etc.

Thanks in Advance

Its kinda awkward for you to just shrug off every other vote and just restart. If you're gonna do what you want anyway, why even make a poll? I won't be surprised if few people vote this time.

Anyway, since Im such a nice guy, I did vote again, and this time it was Khajiit. Both beast-races are great at stealth, (and I voted Argonian last time). Khajiit is a personal favorite of mine for stealth when it comes to statistics, since they have a free Nighteye lesser power, which comes in handy often. A vampire Khajiit is perhaps statistically the best stealth character you can make, as vampire's are given a great Illusion boost. Illusion being a great skill for stealth characters, this is also invaluable.

I personally find it hard to RP with beast races due to lack of immersion but Khajiits in particular are playable for me. They're a great race, and they have tails! What more could you possibly want?!
